Astronomy Talk: Fantasy Flights to the Moon, Robert A. Garfinkle, author of Luna Cognita, A Comprehensive Observer's Handbook of the Known Moon.
This talk is in part based on the same section in my new major lunar observers handbook, Luna Cognita. The 3-volume set is scheduled to be published by Springer before the end of this year. Harrison Schmitt of Apollo 17 wrote the Introduction. The book is available on Amazon.
Bob Garfinkle writes astronomy books, articles, and book
reviews and is recognized as an independent scholar on the history
of astronomy and observing the night sky. His first book, Star-
Hopping: Your Visa to Viewing the Universe, was published in
1994 by Cambridge University Press. This best-selling book was
republished as both a hardback and paperback in 1997. He co-
authored another best-selling book Advanced Skywatching. This
book has been translated into German and Spanish. Bob’s 3-
volume lunar observers’ handbook, Luna Cognita, will soon be
published by Springer. In 1987, he was elected a Fellow of the
Royal Astronomical Society of London. In May 2018, Bob was
notified that the International Astronomical Union had renamed
Minor Planet 2000 EY70 to be 31862 Garfinkle in his honor.
Bob received his first BA in History and a second BA in
English Literature from Cal State-HAYWARD. He is a Past
President of the California Writers Club (2010-12) and Mayor of
Union City. Bob is also the Membership Chair of the Niles
Essanay Silent Film Museum in Fremont.

earliest
story
about
a
trip
to
the
moon,
fantasy
flight
written
by
lucien
of
sama
soda
in
the
second
century,
and
it's
called
in
english,
the
true
history.
Yet
he
starts
out
the
book.
His
first
couple
sentences,
don't
believe
a
word.
I'm
writing
everything
is
a
lie.
So
there
may
be
an
earlier
book
written
about
a
trip
to
the
moon,
but
it
does
exist
back
in
those
days.

People
thought
the
moon
was
very
close,
but
they
thought
if
he
just
went
to
the
Far
mountains
to
the
north.
You
could
reach
up
and
touch
the
moon
as
it
swung
over
the
horizon.
So
Lucy
tells
his
readers
that,
after
they
sail
out
through
the
gates
of
Hercules,
we
now
know
that
as
the
Straits
of
Gibraltar.
Now
they
first
stop
in
an
island
and
they
find
there's
a
river
running
with
wine
and
fish
and
bears
there
are
no
women
on
the
island.

only
females
are
actually
trees
now
Lucy
and
his
adventurers
there's
50
of
them
in
the
boat.
He
loses
two
on
the
island
because
they
decide
to
get
together
with
the
women
trees
and
they
get
stuck
so
they
finally
they're
able
to
leave
the
island
and
they
get
caught
up
in
a
vortex
and
wind
up
in
the
moon.
Now
on
the
moon,
there's
a
war
going
on
between
the
king
of
the
Sun
and
the
king
of
the
moon.

Now
the
king
of
the
moon
is
the
mythological
character,
Endymion
and
they're
fighting
over
colonizing
the
planet,
Venus
so
lúthien
and
his
people
they
get
on
the
side
of
and
MEA
and
they
win
the
war.
So
after
they
leave

moon,
they
land
in
the
ocean
and
they
get
swallowed
by
a
two
hundred
mile
long
whale
now,
they're
in
the
whale
for
a
while.
They
finally
escaped
by
setting
a
bonfire
inside
the
whale,
but
they
don't
get
home.

story
ends
really
before
they
get
back
and
lúthien
says
that
he'll
finish
it
in
the
second
book.

real
joke
is
that
he
never
writes
the
second
book.

He
has
a
little

popular

Johannes
Kepler

the
tone
for
some
of
the
books
that

during
the
1600s
and
1700
there
were
additional
fancy
flights
to
the
moon,
using
such
things
as
birds
flying
horses
and
mysteriously
powered
flying
machines.
In
many
cases,
the
author
of
these
stories
barely
tells
you
exactly.
You
know
what
power
is
that
they're,
using,
especially
with
the
mysterious
powered
flying
machines,
one
lunar
Explorer
searches
for
friends
lost
whips.

he
travels
up
the
moon
again,
we
don't
know
how
he
got
there
and
he
finds
warehouses
all
over
the
place
and
these
warehouses
are
filled
with
everything
that
you
lose
on.
Earth
might
even
be
the
socks
under
your
bed.

it's
includes
speeches,
wife's,
nagging
statements,
memories
again
lost
wits,
anything
and
everything

again
he
doesn't
tell
you
how
they
get
back
home

called

the
moon.

particularly
drawing
is
from
1895
two
volumes

one
in
American
edition,
and

looks
like

train.

he
doesn't
talk
about
it
as
being

whole

of
cars.

like
a

bullet
fired

giant
cannon
on
the
shores
of
Florida
somewhere

the
vicinity
of

Verne
also
realized
that
you
need
have

fire

cannon

something
went
wrong.

wouldn't
land
on
people.

lot
of
people
think
that
Jules
Verne
made
up
everything.

he

student
of
the
science
of
his
day.

character

man
named
Barbra
Kane
and

they're
flying

with
its

explains
that

looking
at
are
cracks

surface

that
he
learned
that
from
a
man
named
James
Naismith
an
article
back
in
1844
in
the
memoirs
of
the
Royal
Astronomical
Society
of
London,
in
which
he
described
him
well.
Verne
was
a
obviously
versed
in
that
article
that
Naismith
had
written
almost
twenty
years
later,
I
mean
earlier,
so
they
don't
reach
the
moon.

in
the
real

stop

the

people
live,

stay
with
the
lunar
people
for
two
years
exploring
well.

predates
telecommunication
by
radio
and
such,
and
so
what
one
of
the
things
they
did
is
they
go
up
to
the
surface
and
on
Mari
Imbrium.
They
set
up
bunch
of
big
lights
and
they
flash
Morse
code
back
to
earth
and
people
on
earth
who
were
part
of
this
set
up
lights
near
Pikes
Peak
in
Colorado,
and
they
signaled
back
and
forth,
while
the
Mari
Imbrium
is
in
the
dark
and
at
night
on
the
earth,
and
so
that
was
kind
of
ingenious
to
do
that.

one
of
the
funny
things
in
the
story
is
they
walk
around
to
the
far
side
of
the
moon
and
they
come
across
a
city
that
has
a
gothic
Church
and
then
they
walk
around
back
to
their
base
back
on
the
front
side.
Now,
at
this
time,
in
1800s
was
still
the
theory
that
lunar
craters
were
actually
volcanoes.
So
how
do
we
get
home?
Well,
they've
moved
their
capsule
into
the
vent
for
a
volcano
that
just
happens
to
be
ready
to
erupt.
It
erupts
and
sends
them
back
to
earth
and
that's
how
they
get
back.

thought
that

inside
of
the
earth,
and

the

the

smaller
circle

the
stars
are
just
a
reflection
off

built
a
contraption
where
they
took
it
out
to

beach

tried
to
show
that

curves
upwards

downwards

moon

only

400
miles
away
from
the
earth.

traveling
people
in

fantasy
flight

think

Apollo
11
crew
members
took
this

chemistry

and
place
it
in
a
monument
that
they
built.

somebody
stole
some
bones
and
in
this
case
they
stole
the
right
middle
finger
and
the
two
bones
of
his
palm
and
they
have
it
standing
up,
and
so
it
is
euphemistic
Auld
Galileo's
last
message
to
the
Pope.

they
also
took
a
tooth
and
there's
a
vertebra
and
some
other
bones
that
have
all
been
now
put
back
together,

to
speak
inside

Galileo

body

little
less
