B
E
You
thank
you
to
the
lieutenant
governor,
mr
speaker,
cameron,
senators,
johnson
and
yarbrough
leaders,
lambeth
and
camper
to
my
fellow
blount,
countians,
jerome
and
art,
and
bob
to
jeremy
faison,
who
suggested
to
me
a
year
ago.
I
should
come
down
here.
Thank
you
for
this
invitation
I'll,
try
to
remember
what
senator
dirksen
said
to
his
son-in-law
senator
baker
on
the
floor
of
the
united
states
senate
after
senator
baker.
What
made
what
we
call
his
maiden
address
his
first
speech.
E
E
Occasionally,
you
might
enjoy
the
luxury
of
an
unexpressed
thought
so
I'll
try
to
remember
that
today,
thanks
to
randy
and
cameron,
for
the
invitation
and
to
all
of
you,
it
gives
me
a
chance
to
say
thank
you
for
the
privilege
that
the
people
of
tennessee
has
has
given
me
over
the
years
and
to
say
through
you
to
them.
E
I've
tried
to
remember
that
it's
hard
to
get
here
where
you
are,
where
I've
been
it's
hard
to
stay
here
and
while
you're
here,
you
might
as
well
try
to
accomplish
something
good
for
the
state
are
good
for
the
country
and
that
there's
more
to
politics
than
politics.
That's
what
I've
tried
to
remember
over
the
last
40
last
40
years.
E
After
I
was
elected
to
the
united
states
senate,
I
was
driving
home
one
night.
Honey
was
in
nashville
and
I
didn't
have
anything
for
breakfast,
so
I
stopped
at
the
market
along
the
lamar
alexander,
parkway
and
realized.
I
didn't
have
any
cash
to
pay
for
my
eggs
and
my
bacon
and
my
orange
juice.
So
I
got
my
credit
card
out
and
I
handed
it
to
the
young
lady
behind
the
counter
and
she
looked
at
my
credit
card
and
she
looked
at
me
and
she
said.
E
Every
now
and
then
speaking
of
roads
every
now
and
then
somebody
will
ask
me
what
I
think
about
what
some
governor
or
some
legislature
has
done.
This
has
been
going
on
since
1987
when
I
left
office,
and
my
answer
always
has
been
through
that
time-
there's
only
one
governor
at
a
time
and
I'm
not
it,
but
if
you
really
want
to
know
what
I
think
about
the
answer
to
that
question,
it's
a
pretty
simple
one.
E
If
someone
were
to
ask
what
should
the
governor
and
the
legislature
be
doing,
my
answer
would
be:
let's
look
back
at
the
last
40
years
and
today
and
just
do
more
of
what
you've
been
doing
because
look.
What
has
happened
to
tennessee
over
the
last
40
years
and
let's
what's
happening
this
very
day
while
you,
while
you
serve,
I
think
the
reason
we
know
the
results.
E
I
mean
we've
seen
over
that
period
of
time,
and
we
see
today
more
companies
coming
in
more
auto
jobs,
attention
for
an
efforts
to
make
better
schools
efforts
to
improve
the
roads,
zero
debt
for
our
road
program.
Very
few
states
have
been
able
to
maintain
over
that
period
of
time
well,
funded,
punches,
well-funded
pension
system,
republican
and
democratic
leaders
who,
who
can
be
civil
to
each
other
and
work
together
and
every
now
and
then
get
a
good
result
for
the
state
and
be
proud
of
it,
and
congratulate
one
another
for
that.
People
like
that.
E
E
If
you
looked
at
kentucky
and
tennessee
and
projected
ahead
40
years,
you
would
think
that
kentucky
would
be
today
where
tennessee
is
but
tennessee's
out,
distance
kentucky
and
the
truth
is
tennessee
has
gained
or
out
distanced
every
single
state
around
us,
and
I
think
the
reason
for
that.
The
reason
is
you
got
all
those
results
and
are
getting
those
results.
E
The
formula
is
pretty
simple:
I
think
it's
steer
the
wagon
speaking
of
roads
write
down
the
right
hand,
side
of
the
highway,
avoid
getting
off
to
the
left,
where
you
might
have
a
head-on
collision
and
don't
go
so
far
to
the
right
that
you
end
up
in
the
ditch
and
if
you
stay
right
down
the
middle
of
the
right-hand
road
of
the
highway
which
you've
been
doing
for
40
years.
I
think
the
next
40
years
look
as
promising
as
the
last
another
way
to
remember.
E
That
is
to
remember
a
story
I
heard
about
bear
bryant
and
the
punter
he
recruited
from
california
to
go
to
the
university
of
alabama.
This
kid
could
really
kick.
He
could
kick
it
more
than
70
yards
every
time
he
punted
and
he
came
down
to
tuscaloosa
and
the
bear
stood
over
there
at
the
side
and
the
young
man
kicked
for
a
week
and
the
bear
never
said
a
word
to
him.
So
finally,
the
young
man
went
over
to
coach
brian
said
coach.
E
I
came
all
the
way
from
california
to
alabama
to
kick
for
you,
and
you
haven't
said
a
word
to
me
and
coach
bryant
said
son
when
you
stop
kicking
it.
70
yards
I'll,
remind
you
of
what
you
were
doing
when
you
did
so.
If
somebody
ever
says
to
you,
what
should
you
be
doing?
What
should
the
government
governor
be
doing?
I
think
a
good
answer
might
be:
let's
stop
and
think
of
what
we
have
been
doing.
E
I
mean
what
produced
those
better
schools,
better
roads,
lower
taxes,
fundamentally
sound
state,
a
good
environment,
that's
attracting
people
all
over
the
country.
What
have
we
been
doing
and
let's
keep
doing
more
of
it?
So
thank
you
for
inviting
me
today.
Thank
you
for
the
privilege
of
serving
the
people
of
the
state
and
congratulations
to
you
on
the
direction
you're
taking
this
state
thanks
very.
