From YouTube: The Beaufort County Charles Lind Brown Center Pool is Dedicated, Renamed For Alvin Settles
Description
Alvin Settles dedicated a life of service to the people of Beaufort, and taught children how to swim at the pool on Greene Street. Beaufort County dedicated and renamed the pool in his honor.
A
A
What
a
beautiful
as
the
mayor
would
say
a
beautiful
beautiful
day.
Not
only
do
we
have
the
sun
shining,
but
I
saw
the
moon
a
little
while
ago
that
has
disappeared.
It
was
right
over
there.
I
saw
it
for
sure.
I
just
want
to
take
this
opportunity
to
welcome
all
of
you
here
as
we
dedicate
this
pool
and
honor
Mr
Alvin
settles,
who
spent
so
very
much
time
here
at
this
pool
at
this
time,
I'll
ask
councilman
New
York,
love
it
to
come
to
the
podium
I.
B
B
B
B
B
B
B
I
didn't
come
here
to
swim,
so
I
didn't
meet
Alvin
there,
but
I
met
Alvin
first
in
church,
and
he
was
a
singer
on
several
choirs
at
the
Tabernacle
Baptist
Church
and
later
on,
albumin
also
became
a
deacon
and
later
on,
Alvin
taught
my
nephew,
my
wife's
nephew
how
to
swim
right
here
in
this
pool
and
because
he
taught
him
and
it
took
him
two
years
because
Alvin
does
a
two-week
session.
But
my
nephew,
my
wife's
nephew
because
of
New
Orleans
going
back
and
forth
for
summer
had
to
do
it
twice.
B
B
They
are
in
oceans,
they
are
in
Seas,
they
are
in
lakes
and
rivers,
and
this
is
because
of
him
that
they
are
able
to
swim,
and
because
of
that,
we
will
move
forward
with
our
program,
and
we
I
want
to
say
this
that
we
are
here
because
of
two
reasons.
B
There
was
an
old
preacher
country
preacher.
That
said,
to
that
always
said,
God
works
in
mysterious
ways
and
his
wonders
to
perform
I
didn't
realize
that
was
in
the
Bible
until
I
saw
it
one
day,
I
thought
it
was
just
his
saying.
We
are
here
because
of
the
grace
of
God
and
he
works
wonders
the
other
reason
we
are
here
because
the
Bible
says
that
when
you
express
any
description
of
of
a
person,
the
best
description
you
can
see
is
that
he
is
a
good
man.
C
C
Alvin
Settles
I
want
to
welcome
Beaufort
City
Council
Members,
mayor
Pro,
tem,
Mike,
McPhee,
councilmember,
Phil,
Cromer,
council
member
Mitch,
Mitchell
councilmember,
Neil,
lipsitz
and
councilmember
elect
Josh
scalotti
I
also
see
Alice
Howard
from
Beaufort
County
Council,
here,
York
Glover,
who
we
just
heard
from
Kevin
Phillips
from
Port
Royal
Town
Council,
my
friend
mentor
and
predecessor,
mayor
Billy,
keiselings
over
there
and
former
coroner
Ed
Allen
I
apologize
if
I
left
out
any
elected
officials
but
appreciate
all
of
you
and
what
you
do
on
behalf
of
Bill
Prokop,
the
city
manager
and
approximately
180
men
and
women
of
the
folks
I
affectionately
call
team
Beaufort
welcome
to
the
heart
of
our
311,
almost
312
year
old
city.
C
It's
also
nice
to
see
County
Administrator,
Eric,
Greenway
and
many
members
of
of
their
executive
staff
from
the
county
public
servants
that
I
get
to
honor
to
to
work
with
I
also
want
to
welcome
the
settles
family.
Thank
you
for
being
here
today
and
the
members
of
their
friends
of
the
Charles
Lynn
Brown
Center.
C
That
I
probably
needed
some
real
swimming
lessons
before
my
dad
threw
me
into
the
pool,
and
there
wasn't
somebody
to
pull
me
out
so
she
enrolled
me
and
for
two
summers:
I
took
swimming
lessons
with
Mr,
settles
here
in
the
pool
and
have
very
fond
memories
of
how
warm
and
compassionate
and
caring
he
was
and
patient.
He
was
and
teaching
the
skills
that
you
need
to
really
survive
around
here
as
a
young
kid
with
the
water
that
that
surrounds
us.
C
So
I
think
it's
fitting
that
we're
putting
his
name
outside
of
the
pool
to
not
only
honor
him
but
to
remind
new
generations
of
the
path.
That's
been
worn
ahead
of
us
that
many
of
us
young
guys
are
able
to
stand
on,
but
I
think
it's
also
a
lesson
that,
as
we
lose
many
members
of
this
generation,
that
I've
looked
up
to
as
a
beaufortonian
since
I
was
so
little
and
I'm
thinking
about
folks
like
Sam,
Murray
or
Alice
Wright
of
recent
passing.
C
I
was
honored
in
2015
when
I
was
new
on
Council
to
pass
a
resolution
with
my
colleagues
on
Council,
led
by
mayor
Billy,
kaiserling,
to
recognize
and
to
honor
him,
but
with
that
I
hope
you
have
a
beautiful
Beaufort
day.
If
there's
anything
that
I
or
anybody
from
Team
Buford
can
do.
We
hope
you'll
you'll,
please
reach
out
all
right
next
up.
D
D
D
D
D
We
realize
that
God
that
they
were
his
source
of
encouragement
and
we
realize
their
God
that
even
this
day
may
bring
back
some
painful
memories,
but
oh
God.
We
know
that
you
are
God
who
are
still
healing
and
a
God
who
still
restore
it.
We
asked
our
blessings
upon
the
family.
Well,
God.
We
give
you
thanks
for
these
intergovernmental
bodies.
D
We
thank
you
dear
God,
for
allowing
them
to
work
together
in
bipartisan
fashion
so
that
they
would
reach
out
and
demonstrate
the
diversity
of
this
community.
By
naming
this
pool
after
Alvin
Settles,
oh
God,
we
give
you
thanks
for
all
of
the
students,
all
those
who
came
young
and
old.
We
thank
you,
dear
God,
for
their
lives.
We
thank
you
dear
God,
for
opening
up
those
of
opportunities
for
other
water,
Recreational
Sports,
oh
God.
We
just
give
you
thanks.
D
We
prayed
their
God
thy
blessing
upon
the
naming
of
this
facility
and
we
pray
to
God
that
it
will
serve
as
a
Beacon
Light,
even
in
these
darkened
times,
and
served
as
a
source
of
encouragement
and
inspiration
for
even
Generations.
Yet
Unborn,
oh
God,
we
pray
that
you
get
the
glory
for
it
is
in
thy
name
and
for
thy
sake
that
we
do
pray,
amen.

B
B
B
So
if
they
would
come
forward
to
receive
this
resolution
from
County
Council
and
we
passed
as
a
year
or
so
ago,
and
if
you
don't
mind
I'm,
just
going
to
read
it
again,
a
resolution
to
name
the
Lynn
Brown
Recreation
Center
outdoor
pool
in
honorable
at
Mr
Alvin
suttles,
whereas
Mr
Alvin
Suttle,
a
native
of
South
Carolina,
spent
his
entire
I
gotta.
Take
my
glasses
off
the
Reed
spent
his
entire
life,
investing
in
Beaufort
County's,
most
valuable
resources,
our
children
and
whereas
we
he
started.
B
The
Beaufort
County
First
publicly
available
swimming
lessons
program
from
scratch
in
1981
and
whereas
he
taught
swimming
lessons
on
the
Marine
Corps
Air
Station
for
32
years
and
at
Beaufort
County's
Lynn,
Brown,
Center,
Green,
Street
Gym
for
30
years,
and
whereas
in
May
2015,
he
was
recognized
for
his
services
to
our
community
by
the
South
Carolina
House
of
Representative
Veer,
a
resolution
presented
or
sponsored
by
Mr
Kenneth
Hodges,
a
state
representative
and
pastor
of
Mr
settle's
church
and
whereas
many
of
Mr
settle's
students
who
never
would
have
had
exposures
to
swimming
or
the
opportunity
to
learn
how
to
swim,
have
excellent,
have
Excel
some
of
them
even
becoming
lifeguards
and
whereas
in
January
on
June,
I'm,
sorry
2015,
the
Beaufort
City
Council
proclaimed
June
23rd
as
Alvin
settles
D
in
honor
of
his
many
years
of
service
to
our
community
and
whereas
it
is
fitting
to
recognize
the
years
of
dedication
and
service
to
this
community
to
his
community,
which
have
brought
great
credit
upon
himself.
B
His
family
and
his
community
now
therefore
be
resolved.
The
Beaufort
County
Council,
duly
assembled
us,
hereby
affirmed
that
the
outdoor
pool
facility
located
at
Lynn,
Brown,
Recreation
Center,
shall
be
named
in
honor
of
Mr
Alvin
settles,
and
this
was
done
on
the
ninth
day
of
May
2022
and
is
signed
by
our
chairman
Joseph
pessiment
of
Beaufort
County,
Council
and
I
wanted
to
give
this
to
them
when
they
come
up.
H
H
H
H
H
H
A
Well,
at
this
time,
we'd
like
to
ask
Gloria
and
Gerard
and
Kristen
and
Yolanda
who
joined
me
at
the
podium
and
also
if
there
are
other
family
members
that
would
like
to
come
and
stand
behind
them.
Please
feel
free
to
do
that
at
this
time,
but
at
this
time
we'll
turn
the
comments
over
to
Gloria
and
her
family.
I
While
they're
still
coming
I'll
begin
because
just
want
to
make
sure
everyone
has
enough
time
to
say
what
they
want
to
say,
but
we're
going
to
try
to
try
to
be
short.
I
What's
good
for
me
is
that
I
have
said
hello
to
so
many
people
this
morning
who
had
the
time
to
work
with
the
Alvin
and
do
things
together,
their
family
and
friends,
but
I,
guess
I'm,
looking
at
all
the
people
that
he
really
had
enough
time
to
work
with
you
from
Laurel
Bay,
Schools
they're.
Here
the
he's
a
state
ID
of
I
am
as
well.
I
We
met
at
South,
Carolina,
State,
University
and
and
that's
how
we
got
together
and,
and
so
some
of
them
are
here
as
well
and
people
just
across
the
whole
Beaufort
County,
because
I
remember
as
well
that
there
were
people
who
came
over
here
in
buses
from
other
places.
They
were
on
just
not
here.
So
the
word
got
out
about
the
pool
down
here
that
you
can
go
to
and
I'm
so
happy
that
Alvin
is
being
remember
that
way
because
I
don't
know
how
many
of
you
know
this,
but
I
just
need
to.
I
Let
you
know:
we've
had
a
different
different
kinds
of
cars,
all
over
the
air
that
we
lived
here,
but
for
some
reason,
after
Evan
started
with
the
pool,
the
cars
would
immediately
without
us
doing
anything
just
come
down
to
the
pool,
because
that's
where
I
would
want
to
go
all
the
time
he
loved
this
place.
He
put
all
he
could
in
it
and
so
I'm
so
happy
that
the
county
is
is
telling
me.
Thank
you,
because
I
really
gave
up
a
lot
of
for
him
to
be
out
here.
A
I
Said,
aren't
you
going
I
said?
Well
you
already
there,
but
it
was.
It
was
a
love.
Well,
I
knew
I
was
first,
but
he
you
know
the
pool
was
all
the
other
one
as
well,
but
I
am
so
so
thankful,
because
what
he
did
he
he
did
not
do
it
to
have
all
this
happening,
but
I'm
quite
sure
he
is
it's.
This
thrilled
as
the
family
is
as
well.
I
My
family
is
here
and
Alvin's
family
says
his
sister
and
his
brother
are
here
and
because
a
lot
of
people
that
they
thought
we
had
family
here,
but
Evan
and
I
were
just
two
of
us
together
here,
so
I'm,
so
grateful
that
Viva
County
felt
that
Alvin
did
something
great,
because
when
he
talks
about
what
he
did
he's
a
he
loves
people
in
general,
I'm,
quite
sure.
I
If
any
of
you
have
ever
met
him,
he
always
has
something
to
say,
but
his
heart
has
always
been
with
with
the
children
and
that's
why
he
started,
because
when
he
first
started
down,
he
said
you
know
something
should
be
better
than
this.
You
know
Alan
used
to
talk
it.
Something
has
to
change
with
this.
I
You
can't
have
this.
You
know
that's
how
he
talked
and
that's
how
he
felt,
and
so
he
he
did
it
that
way.
So,
but
this
other
thing
too,
is
that
I've
heard
other
people
talk
about
it.
Even
the
mayor
said
that
he
was
taught
by
Alvin
because
of
what
happened
to
him.
The
same
thing
happened
to
me
as
well:
Alvin
tried
to
to
teach
me
swimming,
but
that
wasn't
a
gift
he
had.
So
he
didn't
do
that.
I
I
It
showed
that
he
meant
something
more
than
he
even
thought
and
I
as
well,
because
he
he
just
loved
people,
but
he
wanted
to
do
something
that
children
wouldn't
go
through
the
same
things
that
the
older
people
did.
He
wanted
them
to
have
the
opportunity
to
come
and
swim
have
fun
because
he
knew
the
children
we
started
start
them
young.
They
have
a
lot
of
opportunity
to
do
much.
Good
I
just
had
one
last
thing
to
say:
there's
a
in
the
Bible
in
Micah,
six
and
eight.
I
It
says
that
we
are
to
do
what
God
would
have
us
to
do
and
I
was
trying
to
find
it
just
now,
because
I
wrote
it
down.
Okay,
here
it
is,
it
says
the
Lord
has
told
you
what
is
good
and
requires
of
you
and
that's
what
he
wanted
to
do
good,
but
it
says
the
Lord
has
told
you
to
do
what
is
right
to
love
Mercy
and
to
walk
only
with
your
God,
and
that
was
how
he
lived
he
wanted
to
demonstrate.
I
He
said
he
had
love
for
people
and
he
said
he
had
love
for
children,
but
he
wanted
to
make
sure
that
his
life
will
be
that
way,
and
so,
when
Scott
I'm,
the
number
one
fan
of
Scott
Gibbs
over
here
asked
me
what
I
said.
Well,
you
know
what
to
say,
and
he
said
what
Alvin
believed
that
whatever
he
did,
he
wanted
to
be
humble
about
it,
but
in
the
in
the
midst
of
it
all
to
walk
with
God
so
I.
Thank
you
all
who
are
here
I.
I
G
Before
I
start
can
I
get
a
round
of
applause
for
anybody
who
took
a
swimming
lesson
here
had
their
kids
here
work
here.
G
I
see
a
lot
of
old
lifeguards
here,
I
see
kind
of
faces,
I
remember
from
back
in
the
day,
so
I
do
appreciate
everybody
being
here,
but
welcome
everybody.
Thank
you
very
much.
I
want
to
start
by
saying.
Thank
you.
Thank
you
to
see
a
Beaufort
council
members,
friends,
family.
Everyone
who
supported
this
rename
of
the
pool
on
behalf
of
sales
family
I
also
want
to
thank
everyone
from
the
community
that
has
come
out
to
the
Celebration
less
work.
For
my
father.
G
G
G
He
would
go
on
to
South
Carolina
State
University,
where
he
would
continue
his
education
to
the
craft
of
teaching
swimming
with
his
peers
during
undergrad
after
graduating,
with
a
degree
and
moved
down
to
Beaufort.
He
kept
that
patch
for
swimming
word
safety
and
Community
by
working
down
here
at
what
we
call
then
across
the
street,
at
the
Green
Street
pool
my
dad
loves
this
area
of
Beaufort.
He
said
it
reminded
him
home
the
people
that
he
talked
to
every
day.
G
G
G
G
Most
of
the
time,
by
the
end
of
their
lessons
with
Dad,
they
were
low.
There's
their
love
with
the
swimming
pool,
just
like
he
was
I,
also
want
to
thank
all
the
former
lifeguards
that
worked
with
my
dad
here
at
the
pool
like
us
over
the
years
have
worked
with
him
that
have
only
gone
on
to
procedures,
colleges
and
universities
Across
the
Nation.
They
have
gone
on
to
be
doctors,
Engineers
lawyers,
police
officers.
These
are
the
community.
G
He
thought.
Finally,
of
all
of
you
and
hope
you
learn
some
life
skills
working
the
Summers
here
at
the
pool.
My
dad
always
saw
this
area
of
Beaufort
as
a
safe
haven
in
the
community.
A
place
where
you
can
come
home
and
have
a
good
time
also
learn
a
skill
that
can
be
passed
on
the
generation
of
gender
generation.
As
proof
of
that,
my
kids
were
taught
by
my
dad
too.
J
Hello
I'm
not
much
of
a
public
speaker,
so
this
will
be
quick.
I
just
want
to
say,
I,
really
thank
everyone
for
being
here
to
honor.
My
father,
I
have
the
honor
and
the
privilege
of
starting
my
aquatic
career
with
him.
Teaching
me
how
to
swim
and
what
was
the
old
Green
Street
pool
across
the
street
there
working
here
and
then
developing
my
own
aquatic
career
with
working
with
Beaufort
County
as
a
pool
manager
as
well,
and
that
was
our
basic
Bond
of.
J
We
both
had
a
passion
for
well
I,
learned
his
passion
of
wanting
to
be
able
to
teach
the
youngsters
in
the
community
to
swim.
So
when
I
worked
at
the
indoor
pool,
the
learn
to
swim
program
was
very
important
to
me
as
well.
J
In
teaching-
and
you
know,
I
could
always
go
to
him
for
anything.
So
any
issues
that
I
had
with
a
pool
per
se
I
always
felt
like
I,
had
a
one-up,
because
I
had
his
years
and
years
of
experience
to
be
able
to
back
up
my
little
bit
of
experience.
So.
J
K
Good
morning,
I
won't
reiterate
what
has
already
been
said,
but
a
few
of
us
were
talking
when
we
arrived
if
I
was
old
enough
to
remember
the
old
pool
and
I
was
and
like
many
of
you,
I
grew
up,
take
going
to
summer
camp
here
at
both
pools,
also
becoming
a
lifeguard,
just
like
my
siblings,
at
the
old
pool
and
here
growing
up
taking
swim
lessons
becoming
a
lifeguard
I
actually
worked
for
my
dad
for
a
year
and
then
went
to
work
for
my
sister.
K
A
I
want
to
thank
you
Gloria
for
those
remarks
that
we
always
learn
something
about
the
family.
At
occasions
like
this
and
I,
think
we
learn
more
about
Alvin
this
morning
before
we
move
outside
or
to
the
corridor
for
the
unveiling
I
just
want
to
say
something,
because
this
morning
is
very
touching.
I
said
earlier
that
the
Sun
was
shining
and
the
moon
was
too
it
and
there
it
is
so
I'm
sure
Alvin
is,
and
Heaven
smiling
down
on
this
wonderful
occasion,
probably
wondering
what's
all
the
fuss
about,
but
we
can
we
can.
