From YouTube: Engine 17 Topping Off Ceremony 6/2/2023
Description
Mayor Wu, with the Boston Fire Department and members of the Dorchester community, attend the topping off ceremony of BFD Engine 17's new building on Parish Street.
C
Good
morning,
everyone,
so
let
us
pray
good,
loving,
God,
As,
We
Gather
on
this
historic
ground,
Meeting
House,
Hill,
First,
Parish
Church,
the
Mathis
School,
the
oldest
Elementary
School
in
the
country,
just
down
the
street.
My
own
church,
Saint
Peters
150
years
this
year
and
a
little
further
down
Ronan
Park
the
highest
point
in
Dorchester.
C
We
pray
for
Amir
for
our
commissioner
for
all
elected
officials,
all
who
lead
our
city,
that
they
have
the
wisdom
and
the
conviction
they
need
to
lead.
Our
city
is
the
people
the
Citizens
need
and
deserve
in
a
very
special
way.
We
turn
to
the
children
with
us
from
the
Mather
school
and
all
the
children
of
our
city.
C
Looking
forward
to
some
of
that,
it
will
be
a
safe
and
fun
enjoyable
summer
for
them,
but
they
also
will
finish
their
school
year,
strong
to
the
end,
all
their
hard
work,
loving,
God,
all
our
prayers.
Now
we
hand
over
to
you
seeking
your
blessing
upon
the
beam
ourselves
and
all
we
hold
in
our
hearts.
C
D
Hello,
everybody
great
to
see
you
here,
Wu
members
of
the
students
of
the
Mathis
School,
it's
great
to
have
you
here
to
raise
the
beam
today.
This
is
a
special
day
for
the
fire
department,
but
not
just
the
fire
department
for
the
whole
neighborhood
I'd
like
to
thank
mayawu
without
her
leadership.
Your
support
for
our
department
and
your
support
for
our
department
this
day
would
never
be
possible.
Thank
you
mayor
today's
ceremony.
D
Today's
ceremony
is
placing
the
last
I-beam
on
top
of
this
new
Firehouse,
which
means
the
structural
work
of
the
Ironworkers
is
now
complete.
In
the
final
steps
of
finishing
the
inside
can
begin.
This
beam
will
have
the
signatures
of
people
in
the
community
and
Beyond
who
made
this
day
possible.
It
will
be
a
time
capsule
lasting
as
long
as
a
building
and
as
firehouses
last
in
this
city,
that's
probably
more
than
100
years,
and
that's
not
a
shot
that
a
male
though
she
hasn't
been
the
mayor
that
long
well,
one
quick
story:
Captain
Camerota!
D
Can
you
raise
your
hand?
Where
are
you
there?
He
is
over
there
captain
camerata,
he
was
a
newly
appointed
captain
and
he
was
assigned
to
a
firehouse
in
Charlestown
engine
50..
Well,
Engine
50.
They
they
kicked
them
out
and
they
had
Renovations
take
place
well,
these
Renovations
took
quite
a
while,
so
they
built
the
Encore
Hotel
for
two
billion
dollars
completed
it
and
that
Firehouse
still
wasn't
done.
So
we
all
thought
Captain
camerata
was
jinxed,
but
now
that
he's
assigned
here-
and
this
is
done
so
quickly-
we
think
the
curse
is
gone.
Captain.
D
D
You
guys
are
fantastic.
The
incredible
speed
which
you
put
this
building
together,
it's
fantastic!
Thank
you
to
JJ
contractors,
the
anime
architectures,
the
all
those
people
that
played
a
role
in
this
and
thank
you
to
the
members
of
the
fire
department
that
made
this
a
reality.
Along
with
the
public
facilities
division.
Scott
Dupree.
Can
you
raise
your
hand
Mr
Dupree
there?
He
is
many
of
you
may
not
know
him,
but
he
is
the
man
behind
the
curtain.
He
gets
things
done.
Projects
like
this
to
completion
Scott.
Thank
you
so
much.
D
It's
great
feeling
to
be
part
of
something
like
this.
It
is
truly
a
community
effort.
As
a
department
and
the
city,
we
are
getting
better
and
quicker.
We're
constructing
buildings
that
fit
the
community
serve
the
residents
and
protect
the
environment.
This
one
person
I
would
like
to
acknowledge.
That's
not
here
with
us
today,
Marie
Conley,
Marie
Conley
was
a
Crossing
God,
a
mother,
a
Dorchester
native.
She
lost
her
life,
doing
what
she
loved
right
out
in
the
street
out
here.
D
Looking
after
the
children
of
the
Mathers
School
Marie's
brother
was
a
former
fire
commissioner
Joe
Finn,
her
son
Chris,
is
a
firefighter
and
a
proud
member
of
Lata.
Seven
right
up
here
and
he'll
be
stationed
in
this
building
and
I
think
it
is
more
than
fitting
to
have
her
name
on
this
beam.
Her
son
has
signed
her
name,
which
I'm
sure
makes
him
proud
to
know.
His
mother's
memory
will
live
on
inside
of
this
beautiful
building.
D
One
last
comment:
can
I
see
Captain
Sullivan's
hand
raise
he's
here
and
it's
his
90th
birthday,
captain
Solomon?
Where
are
you
there?
He
is
okay,
Captain.
Thank
you
for
coming
here.
Happy
birthday,
captain.
E
Thank
you
so
much,
commissioner.
We
are
so
grateful
for
your
leadership
and
thank
you
to
my
favorite,
my
bestie
Captain
Sullivan
and
everyone
from
the
Liars
Club
we're
so
grateful
for
you
for
Paving
that
foundation
for
us
and
very
proud
to
have
you
with
us.
Thank
you
to
our
Mather
school
students
as
well.
You've
been
wonderful
and
we
are
really
really
excited
that
your
names
will
be
on
this
too.
So
just
so,
everyone
has
a
center.
E
Some
experts
here
who
have
made
this
project
go
really
fast,
you'll
hear
from
some
of
them
shortly
like
Carrie
Griffin
from
our
public
facilities
department
at
the
city
and
Pat
Lee
from
the
facilities
department
at
the
fire
department,
our
incredible
iron
workers
who
have
worked
so
hard
and
done
such
a
great
job.
But
what
we're
seeing
today
this
is
really
all
these
beams
and
all
these
posts
are
the
bones
of
the
building
and
everything
else
is
going
to
get
filled
in
on
the
inside
and
over
on
the
outside,
and
this
last
most
important
bone.
E
E
So
that's
what
like
10
11
years
old,
so
you're
going
to
come
back
one
day
when
you're
gonna
be
as
old
as
I
am
38
or
as
old
as
some
of
the
folks
here,
maybe
with
your
own
family
and
you'll,
see
a
beautiful
Strong
building
and
know
that
your
name
is
inside
and
the
most
important
top
beam
there.
So
we're
so
thankful
for
you
being
part
of
today's
ceremony.
E
This
is
really
a
project
that
represents
an
incredible
collaboration
and
and
what
we
need
to
be
doing
for
all
of
our
public
servants
and
and
those
who
are
putting
their
lives
on
the
line
every
day,
investing
in
a
project
that
will
be
safe
and
healthy
and
the
finally
appropriate
working
environment
that
our
firefighters
deserve,
but
also
with
community
space.
That's
fully
accessible
for
community
members
to
be
welcome
inside
with
artwork.
That
will
be
featuring
a
local
Artist
as
well
and
space
where
any
of
our
students
can
come
and
visit
any
any
time.
E
Well,
not
no
canceling
school,
but
except
for
that
anytime
and
so
I.
Just
want
to
thank
again,
commissioner
Burke,
who
has
been
such
a
partner
and
I'm
I'm,
just
feel
so
lucky
that
he
said
yes
to
serving
in
this
role,
as
I
stepped
into
my
role
as
well,
to
Father
Curry,
for
your
leadership
and
in
so
many
ways
and
your
stewardship
of
this
community
in
in
not
just
moments
like
this,
but
in
moments
that
are
much
more
difficult
than
this.
E
We're
grateful
for
you
to
my
colleagues
City
councilor
Baker,
who
has
been
behind
pushing
for
this
for
a
very,
very
long
time
and
we'll
we'll
make
sure
that
we
see
it
through
as
quickly
as
possible.
Thanks
for
all
that,
you
do
and
to
our
relatively
new
State
Rep
State
Rep
Chris
Worrell
we're
grateful
for
all
that
you
do
and
how
much
you
show
up
for
the
community
so
most
of
all
to
our
Captain
to
the
Chiefs
captain
camerata
and
Chiefs
Pettaway
Rodriguez,
Harrison
Whitman.
E
All
of
the
firefighters
who
are
here
thank
you
for
putting
your
lives
on
the
line
for
us
every
single
day
for
rushing
out,
no
matter
how
big
or
small
the
situation
is
and
making
sure
that
our
residents
know
they
have
the
top
world
class
care
from
you
all.
We're
so
thankful
for
all
that
you
do.
We
want
you
to
do
it
in
a
space.
That
really
is
one
that
you
deserve,
and
that
reflects
modern,
beautiful,
healthy
working
environment
for
you
and
your
family.
So
thank
you.
E
Thank
you
and
I'm
so
proud
to
see
you
all
here
today
and
now.
I
get
to
introduce
someone
who
has
been
in
charge
of
not
only
making
sure
this
project
has
stays
on
schedule,
but
so
many
other
big
things
that
we're
doing
across
the
city,
with
community
centers
libraries
and
City
Hall
Plaza.
We
want
to
make
sure
all
of
our
spaces
are
beautiful,
especially
in
our
neighborhood.
So
our
public
facilities,
director,
Carrie
Griffin.
F
Good
morning
and
thank
you
mayor
will
for
your
commitment
to
investing
in
the
health
and
wellness
of
our
firefighters.
Thank
you,
commissioner
Burke,
and
the
bft
bft
team,
Pat,
Dennis
and
Richie
for
your
partnership
on
this
project.
I
also
want
to
welcome
our
elected
officials,
who
are
here
today
and
last
but
not
least,
the
community
members
and
the
firefighters
who
have
joined
us
for
this
great
event.
I
also
want
to
acknowledge
Reverend
Elizabeth
for
the
First
Parish
church
across
the
street.
F
Every
every
square
inch
of
this
Firehouse
takes
into
consideration
the
firefighter
returning
from
an
A
Fire
event.
This
Firehouse
features
the
separation
and
compartmentalization
of
air
systems
and
Zoning
cleaning
into
a
quick
drying
of
Saturn,
okay,
as
well
as
team
showers
to
Aid
in
the
removal
of
carcinogens.
F
Thank
you
to
my
tremendous
team
at
PFT,
my
senior

manager,
Scott
Dupree
assistant,
director,
Susan,
Rice,
Clerk
of

Thank
you
to
the

led
by

by

from

and
thank
you
for
our

F
F
Today's
topping
off
ceremony
maximize
your
milestone
in
a
Project's
life
cycle.
The
custom
of
the
final
beam
raising
celebrates
the
construction
process
and
it
honors
the
accomplishments
of
the
construction
crew.
The
tree
is
the
key
symbol
and
the
steel
Trade
It
symbolized
construction
has
reached
the
sky
without
loss
of
life
or
injury
and
signifies
hope
and
good
luck
for
the
future
occupants.
F
G
Good
morning,
everyone,
thank
you
all
for
coming
to
this
exciting
event.
For
those
of
you
that
don't
know
me,
my
name
is
Patrick
Lee
I'm,
the
facilities
director
here
at
the
fire
department.
I
came
on
board
about
six
months
ago,
and
the
first
thing
I
did
in
my
new
role,
was
to
attend
the
engine.
17
weekly
construction
meeting
at
that
meeting
I
met
the
team
that
by
then
had
been
diligently
working
on
the
project
for
some
time
and
I
was
feeling
pretty
good.
Shortly.
G
After
that
meeting
the
city
experienced
a
weekend
of
record-breaking
cold
temperatures,
it
was
freezing
and
after
a
day
of
chasing
frozen
pipes
and
field
heating
systems,
I
spent
about
six
hours
here
in
engine
17's
boiler
room
making.
Sure
our
heating
contractor
got
the
boiler
running
and
kept
it
running
all
night.
That
was
the
night
that
I
truly
realized
how
bad
this
building
needed
to
be
replaced.
G
The
old
house
served
Dorchester
and
the
meeting
house
Hill
Neighborhood
Faithfully
for
almost
100
years,
and
when
I'm
presented
with
questions
for
the
construction
I
say
my
motivation
is
what
will
this
be
like
to
maintain
in
the
future?
Will
this
make
my
life
hotter
or
easier
down
the
road,
but,
to
be
honest,
the
truth
is
I
have
ulterior
motives.
G
The
truth
is
Ikea
I'm
part
of
this
community
I
have
deep
roots
in
this
neighborhood
I
am
raising
my
family
here.
I
want
to
know
that
long
after
I'm
gone
engine,
17
Latta
7
will
continue
to
protect
the
meeting
house.
Hill
Neighborhood
in
the
town
of
Dorchester
is
Village
vigilantly,
as
the
old
house
has,
and
the
members
of
the
fire
department
that
work
within
it
have
a
safe,
comfortable
and
fully
functioning
place
to
call
home
facilities.
Maintenance
is
a
tough
business.
You
typically
only
hear
from
people
when
there's
a
problem
before
I
got
here.
G
I
had
managed
much
bigger
buildings,
with
lots
of
different
functions
and
I
honestly
believe
when
I
got
here.
How
cut
how
hard
can
it
be
running
a
bunch
of
firehouses
well
six
months
ago,
let
me
tell
you:
I
got
a
crash
course
in
it.
Managing
a
40
building
portfolio
with
an
average
age
of
77
years
poses
some
challenges
to
say
the
least
engine.
This
has
broken
that
a
lot
of
that
is
leaking.
G
This
SOC
FAO,
my
head,
was
spinning,
but
after
picking
up
the
Playbook
left
by
commissioner
Burke
from
when
he
was
chief
of
fleeing
facilities
and
now
under
the
leadership
of
Deputy
Dennis
Devlin,
the
department
has
been
able
to
do
great
things
in
a
short
time
other
than
this
exciting
project.
Currently
and
in
the
next
couple
of
years
we
are
remodeling
kitchens
and
fire
houses,
building
privacy,
politicians,
replacing
generators,
roofs
and
having
houses
all
over
the
city.
G
Deep,
cleaned,
painted
and
removed
of
all
hazardous
materials
and
carcinogens,
with
more
to
comp
simultaneously
in
the
maintenance
department,
is
responding
to
calls
managing
contractors
performing
repairs
and
doing
what
it
takes
to
keep
these
buildings
running.
It
takes
a
special
group
of
people
to
do
this
work.
The
department
I'd
like
to
take
a
second
to
recognize
some
people
that
go
unnoticed.
I
need
to
recognize
that
department,
electricians,
Neil,
McCarthy,
Chris,
duchini,
Jimmy,
Freeman
and
Joe
O'brien.
G
They're
out
fixing
lights
and
keeping
the
lights
on
Joe
cap
Bobby,
Peckham,
Woody,
brisney
and
Steve
Miller
and
Arthur
Bruno
on
maintenance.
Mechanics
are
all
over
the
city
delivering
that
you
delivering
materials
Jason
Whalen.
Our
plumber
is
running
around
chasing
broken
sinks.
I
need
to
recognize
that
man
on
the
streets,
Richie
Paris.
G
Richard
keeps
that
service
providers
honest
and,
to
be
honest,
we're
gonna,
we're
gonna,
miss
him
when
he
retires
in
just
a
few
short
months,
but
if,
I'm
being
completely
honest,
the
whole
department
would
fall
flat.
If
we
didn't
have
a
woman
behind
the
scenes,
our
very
own
Joanne
Callahan,
she
keeps
the
train
moving.
Where
are
you
Joanne?
G
Thank
you
all
very
much.
The
engine
17
project
is
going
to
be
a
great
addition
to
this
historic
neighborhood
and
the
construction
is
progressing
nicely.
That
work
doesn't
happen
on
its
own.
There
are
so
many
people
I'd
like
to
thank
for
their
hard
work,
and
please
forgive
me
if
I
miss
anyone
thanks
to
the
J
J,
Construction
team
and
I'm
Architects
for
their
professionalism
and
attention
to
detail.
But
most
of
all
thank
you
for
your
patience.
I
do
realize
decisions
and
responses
aren't
always
received
clearly
in
a
timely
fashion.
G
There
has
been
some
flip-flopping
and
you
guys
have
been
unbelievable.
Thank
you.
So
much
I
need
to
thank
public
facilities,
Carrie
Griffin's
team.
Thank
you.
This
would
be
an
unkept
parking
lot
if
it
weren't
for
the
professionals
at
PFD,
just
to
name
a
few
of
the
great
folks
over
there
I'd
like
to
recognize
Evan
Brigman,
Alan
McDonough.
G
Susan
Rice,
my
old
boss,
Sean
Weir,
Richie
Higgins
and
just
like
commissioner
Burke
said
I
could
never
forget
the
Rockstar
project
manager
that
is
Scotty
Dupree.
Where
is
he
he's
the
best?
Second
to
none.
G
Lots
of
people
have
had
their
hand
in
this
project,
I'd
like
to
thank
Joe,
Brooks
and
Mary
Joe
in
the
in
the
experts.
Thank
you,
bft's
radio
division,
Sean
McGonagall
on
the
fire,
alarm,
construction,
crew,
they've
been
unbelievable
and,
of
course,
all
the
men
and
women
of
the
construction
team.
You
guys
are
the
best.
This
is
not
easy.
Work
and
I
know
it.
Thank
you.
I
would
like
to
thank
the
neighborhood.
The
man
of
the
school.
G
The
Many
religious
groups,
all
the
neighbors
and
residents
for
their
patience
and
understanding
nobody
likes
construction
right
outside
the
door
and
the
neighborhood's
been
accommodating
and
very
understanding
seems
that
Carrie
and
I
googled
the
same
article
about
the
tree,
raising
thing
so
you've
already
heard
that
story,
so
I'll
I'll
wrap
it
up.
So
whatever
the
slant
or
history
that
you
get
from
the
Evergreen,
it
symbolized
positive
things:
good
luck
for
future
occupants
new
or
continued
growth
and
content
with
the
environment
and
a
safe
job.
Well
done.
G
G
This
is
a
very
exciting
day
for
the
fire
department
for
Meeting
House
Hill
for
Dorchester
and
all
of
the
city
of
Boston,
under
the
leadership
of
commissioner
Burke
in
the
support
and
guidance
of
Mayor
Michelle
Wu
The,
Boston,
City,
Council
Office
of
budget
management
and
the
public
facilities.
Department
I
am
confident
it
won't
be
long
before
we
see
more
Christmas
trees
on
top
of
new
firehouses.
Thank
you
all
very
much.
H
Thank
you,
everybody
for
being
here,
I'm,
not
what
you
call
a
public
speaker,
but
I
gotta
try
so
first
off
I
just
want
to
thank
the
construction
Team
without
that
without
them.
None
of
this
would
happen,
but
I
I
want
to
say
that
the
true
strength
in
that
steel
beam
right.
There
are
the
names
that
are
on
it,
those
that
are
present
those
that
have
passed
and
let
me
digress
a
short
time
ago.
H
I
did
an
interview
in
the
firehouse
and
the
reporter
asked
me
what
Boston
won
meant
to
me
and
at
the
time
we
have
Martin
Richards
pitcher
on
our
board
with
all
the
Fallen
firefighters,
and
it
was
staring
right
at
me
and
I
couldn't
stop
thinking
of
the
Innocence
loss
that
day
and
everybody
affected
and
I
I
couldn't
understand
that
the
worst
in
humanity
existed
like
it
did
that
day,
but
it
brought
Solace
to
me
when
I
realized.
The
best
in
humanity
came
out
that
day
when
the
community
in
the
emergency
responders
pulled
together.
H
Great
things
happen.
The
same
thing
is
happening
on
that
beam
and
the
same
thing
is
happening
here
today.
It
happens
in
every
level.
What
the
commission
has
said:
Marie
Conley,
a
Crossing
God,
protecting
the
innocence
of
children
crossing
the
street,
was
taken
in
this
location,
Adam,
Cahill,
firefighter
Atlanta.
Seven,
his
father
perished
in
the
line
of
duty
Adam
last
Sunday
ran
into
a
Berlin
Building
without
thought
of
his
own
self
and
helped
with
the
crew
of
Lata
7,
rescued
three
individuals
that
were
definitely
going
to
meet
their
fate.
H
There
are
many
other
names
out
there.
I
could
keep
going.
If
you
want
come
to
Memorial
Hall,
you
can
see
all
the
pitches
on
the
ceiling
of
all
those
that
paid
the
ultimate
sacrifice.
The
other
thing,
too,
is
I.
Watch
the
teachers
from
the
Mather
school.
They
had
us
come
over
the
other
day
and
cheer
on
kids
in
a
race.
It's
it's
all
about
community
and
coming
together.
The
church
we've
had
our
conversations.
We
we
all
get
along.
We
we
bring
it
together.
Greatness
happens
because
of
all
of
you
and
all
of
us
working
together.
H
I
Hi,
my
name
is
Elizabeth
carrier,
lad,
I'm,
so
glad
to
have
you
here
on
meeting
house.
Hill
I
want
to
start
just
by
acknowledging
the
incredible
history
of
this
spot
of
land
at
the
beginning
of
our
worship
service.
Every
week
we
acknowledge
that
the
land
that
we
are
on
on
meeting
house
Hill
is
the
unseated
land
of
the
Pawtucket
and
the
Massachusetts
peoples,
and-
and
we
name
that
it's
important
to
be
incredibly
good,
stewards
of
the
land
and
all
the
resources
that
it
has
brought
to
us.
I
So
I'll
start
there,
but
this
space
Also
long
before
it
was
our
parking
lot,
was
a
meeting
space
for
our
communities.
It
was
an
important
Gathering,
Place
and
there's
nothing
more
important
to
communities
than
gathering
places
places
where
we
can
meet
one
another
and
understand
each
other,
a
little
bit
more
and
work
towards
common
goals
together
being
one
of
the
few
common
spaces
in
this
neighborhood
and
knowing
the
demand
for
Community
spaces.
It's
it's
crucially
important
that
we
have
a
community
space
here
in
our
new
Firehouse
Beyond.
I
How
important
it
is
to
have
a
firehouse
that
is
well
kept
and
beautiful,
and
and
provides
the
things
that
you
all
need
to
do
your
jobs
right,
but
the
community
space
is
a
huge
need
that
I
am
so
grateful.
We
will
have
more
space
for
people
to
gather,
to
celebrate
their
milestones
and
to
meet
one
another
so
that
we
can
continue
to
make
this
city
more
loving
and
compassionate
and
understanding
of
one
another
and
I'll
close
by
just
saying.
I
I
A
Thank
you.
Thank
you.
Thank
you.
Everybody
I'm
a
little
emotional
here,
so
I
didn't
really
necessarily
prepare
or
want
to
speak,
but
thank
you.
We
have
to
thank
the
man
for
your
continued
support
to
to
the
fire
department
to
this
this
this
project.
Here,
like
everybody,
knows
it's
it.
Nothing
is
done
by
one
person.
We've
thanked
everybody
here,
there's
been
hundreds,
if
not
thousands,
of
people
who
who
have
done
paper,
everything
from
paperwork
to
site
visits
to
everybody
that
was
involved
in
this.
A
Thank
you
so
much
and
and
for
me
this
is
this
is
sweet,
also
because
I
won't
be
here
next
year
in
this
role,
I'm
I'm,
transferring
from
City
councilor
to
city
council,
Emeritus
I
will
be
next
year
so,
but
to
leave
on
a
note
like
this
and
into
your
words,
are
beautiful
by
the
way
you
know
we
do
have
to
come
together.
We
do
have
to
show
more
love
to
our
neighbors,
and
this
is
just
another
Gathering
Spot,
you
guys
are
part
of
the
community
and
thank
you
for
the
way
you
run
your
firehouses
commissioner.
