The Buncombe County Parks, Greenways and Recreation Office have a wide variety of activities going on throughout the year, for every age and energy level. In this episode, host Angie hall will introduce you to the recreation department staffs from both Buncombe County and Black Mountain as they fill you in all the entertaining events.

Events such as the upcoming Scarecrow Festival, the greenway at Alexander Park, the Fall Kid's Fishing Tournament, Special Olympics updates, Yoga in the Park, Home School P.E., Sidewinder Disc Golf Tournament, Rock the Quarry Race, Haunted Pool Lagoon and much more!

Hi welcome to this edition of come out and play I'm your host once again, angie hall, we have a lot of fun activities coming up for halloween, but before we get to those we're going to tell you about some of our events in buncombe county and in the town of black mountain today, we're here at the alexander trail park. This is part of buncombe county's connect, buncombe lucy crown is getting ready to tell you about our new trail.

Excited to tell you about our extension of the walking trail here at alexander park. We were able to construct this with a grant from the recreational trails program of north carolina and it extends the trail almost another half mile so down here at the park. We have almost a mile of walking trail. It's a great place to come down for a picnic, it's a great place to come and fish and it's a beautiful place to sit by the river so come on down to alexander park.

If you would like to come visit alexander park, it's located on the french broad river, on old marshall, highway across from the county landfill. The directions from asheville is to take us 1923 north to the marshall, hot springs exit. Take this exit using us, 2570 and drive to the second lot turn left onto monticello road and follow this until it ends at old marshall. Highway turn right and drive several miles to alexander park, located on your left, getting outside and walking on trails. It's a great way to get exercise and to get in shape.

Black mountain also has a way that you can get in shape, and here's renee to tell you more.

Thanks angie, I'm renee mastrangelo from the black mountain recreation and parks department, and I'm here today at lake tomahawk in beautiful black mountain north carolina september is national yoga month, and the way we are celebrating is with the black mountain yoga center is coming out to lake tomahawk. Every saturday from 9 to 10 am and offering a donation yoga class, so donation means whatever is comfortable to you. If you bring, your yoga mat show up a few minutes before nine o'clock here at lake tomahawk.

The class will last about an hour and it will be a level one flow yoga class. Again no experience is necessary. We just wish everybody from the back mountain area would come out and enjoy lake tomahawk and celebrate national yoga month. If you have questions about this program, please give me a ring here at the senior center at 669-8610 or just show up at the park at any saturday in september, a little bit before 9 a.m. Thanks.

Renee it's time for our fall: kids fishing tournament at lake julian park. Here's david blind to give you the details.

Thanks angie, I'm david blint, I'm the manager out at lake julian park, it's time again for our uh fall kids fishing tournament this year. uh This year's event will be like all others. We've had it's five dollars per kid to enter the tournament this year. Our date this year is september. The 24th we'll have registration beginning that morning, at eight o'clock, we'll start fishing at 8 30, we'll fish on through 11 30., then we'll have prizes for different events that we have and lots of fun for the kids.

We'll also have a cookout at the end of the event. So, if you'd like to get more information about the event, you can give us a call out here at lake julian at 684-0376.

Thanks david well, school is back in session and, if you're looking for somewhere for your child to go after school in the black mountain area, then carolyn fryeburger has some ideas for you. This.

Is carolyn freiburger from black mountain recreation and parks? I'm the health services program administrator, and I'm going to tell you a little bit about some programs. We have starting up for the fall with school getting back in session.

If you need something for the kids to do after school, we've got several programs that run at our carver community center. We have a program called art in the afternoon, which is runs as it would suggest through the whole afternoon, kids do different art projects and theater projects, and that's located right at the carver community center. They can even take the bus right there from the local black mountain schools and for more information on that you can contact our office 669-2052 or check out our website.

Also at the carver center we do offer karate classes in the afternoons and for the younger kids. We have some programs that go on during the day, there's a gymnastics class for younger children and a play group as well. So you can again just contact our office for more information on how to how to get signed up for those great programs for the kids. This fall.

Thanks carolyn buncombe county special olympics is starting up their fall sports season and is in need of volunteers, coaches and athletes. Here is grace to give you the information you need to get involved.

All right special olympics is now cranking up. I need you, athletes out there. I need bocce players, I need soccer players, I need cheerleaders, we need basketball coming up, we need bowlers. So there's no reason for anybody not to join in. You need to give me a call 250-4265. I can send you all. Your registration forms takes a few minutes to fill them out, get a real, quick physical. Also, I'm looking for coaches take a little time. I know it's all volunteer, but we do need your time and effort.

Also, on october the 22nd at the buncombe county sports park, we will have our regional bocce tournament, where over 200 athletes will get together for the bocce tournament. Give me a call no matter day or night, 250-4265 and I'll be more than happy to bring you into the special olympics. Family.

And speaking of special olympics grace young, whom you just heard from and terry gentile, were recently recognized for their hard work with special olympics and buncombe county. Here's friend thigpen, the director of buncombe county parks and recreation.

Today I would like to congratulate and thank grace young and terry gentile for their work through the years with buncombe county special olympics and for their recently received awards as local coordinator of the year and volunteer of the year for smoky mountain area special olympics north carolina, I've worked with grace for many many many years, she's a hard worker determined to succeed and dedicated person.

Two years ago grace took on the local coordinator job for special olympics in buncombe county. The local coordinator is the person has responsibility for directing and leading the special olympics program here in buncombe county. She recruits and trains volunteers. She recruits and signs up athletes and does fundraising to help support the program as well as organizing all the events that happen with special olympics in buncombe county grace has helped buncombe county's program grow tremendously.

Her hard work, caring and organizational skills are a good match for the special olympics, local coordinator job. During the past two years, the number of athletes participating has increased. For example, our local spring games program grew from 200 to 400 athletes in just the two years that she's been coordinating the program.

The number of sports offered has increased, we've added power, lifting track and field and year-round aquatics. The number of volunteers and coaches has increased and the amount of money raised to support the program locally has increased. Also, those are incredible accomplishments for the two years she's been coordinating this program, so thank you grace.

Terry gentile has worked with special olympics for oh in buncombe county over 25 years, and this year was awarded the 2011 local volunteer for smokey mountain area, special olympics of north carolina terry's involvement has mainly been in the area of aquatics and and her recognition as volunteer of the year really just points to the accomplishments and her dedication for working in special olympics for 25 years.

One thing that her nomination said about terry is how she treats all the athletes that participate with respect, and she has a great ability to teach, and she has a tremendous amount of time invested in this program and in our community special olympics program.

When parks and recreation needs a volunteer to help with any project, especially with special olympics terry's, always the first one to step up her can-do will do got it done. Attitude has helped special olympics athletes and her co-workers over and over again.

Thank you, terry great energy, hard work, terrific organizational skills are what grace and terry both bring to special olympics north carolina and special olympics at buncombe. County moncomb county is lucky to have them both working in this program, and I am lucky that they work in parks and recreation here in buncombe county and thank them and congratulate them on their awards.

If you're, the parent of an 11 or 12 year old, you know how challenging that age can be, but, as grown up as they feel, your child still depends on you to protect them from illness and preventable diseases before your child enters the sixth grade. This fall schedule a checkup with their doctor and ask about preteen vaccines to protect against meningitis whooping cough flu and the virus that can cause cervical cancer and genital warts, or visit the buncombe county department of health for preteen vaccines to learn more go to buncombecounty.org preteen.

Welcome back september is active aging month and renee has scheduled a trip to a local farm in black mountain and shopping in the river arts district of asheville to help you stay active september.

Is active aging month and one way to stay active while we age is to travel, the lakeview senior center will be offering two vancland trips this month. One is on september 16th and the other is on september 23rd. Our trip on the 16th is going to hop in blueberry farm located here in black mountain. We'll travel up to this farm see how hops are grown, pick some blueberries and see I'm on our butterfly garden.

If you'd like to join us to tour this farm, it'll cost you seven dollars and you need to call me at the senior center to sign up. Our second trip will be to asheville on the 23rd. We will go to 12 bones for lunch and shop. The river arts district 12 bones is a nationally recognized restaurant here in asheville, and we will get to enjoy some of that barbecue and afterwards we will spend a couple of hours shopping. All the local art shops. That trip will cost you five dollars.

I'm terry gentile aquatic supervisor for buncombe, county parks, greenways and recreation services. You are at the zorgner center at 90, springside road. We are behind tc roberson high school. We have lap swim, that's monday, wednesday and friday from 8 30 to 10, 30 and tuesdays, and thursdays 8 30 to 10 and water exercise, classes that are tuesdays and thursdays from 10 to 11. starting september 11th, we'll start with family swim on sundays, 1 30 to 5.. So you need to come out and jump in the water with us.

The water's great the pool is clear so come on out.

Thank you, terry. The zoidman center is not only a great place to go swimming, but you can also rent it for parties just give terry a call and speaking of parties. It's almost time for the annual games party in black mountain here's renee.

Coming up in september, we have a lot of great programs going on here at lake tomahawk. One of them is the friends of lake tomahawk fundraiser games party. The games party is a way of folks to come out and participate in a variety of ways. We have bridge canasta, dominoes, scrabble, really any game that you want to come out and bring a group of people to play with, and it's a donation of ten dollars a person and all of that money goes into friends of lake tomahawk friends.

Lake tomahawk is a nonprofit organization that raises money to beautify our park. Lake tomahawk is used by people all over western north carolina. It has a half mile walking trail, a playground, tennis courts. The senior center is here, the swimming pool is here. We have it all and to keep it beautiful. We need your help so come out on september, 22nd to the senior center and participate in our games party. Are starting up in black mountain at the gray eagle arena? So if you or your children like to play soccer or dodgeball, then here's carolyn to tell you how you can join a team. I'm.

Going to tell you a little bit about the fall sports leagues that we have going on. We've got sports leagues for adults and for kids for the adults. This fall. We have a dodgeball league and also a co-ed soccer league for more information about either of those programs. You can contact our office at 828-669-2052.

And you can find out how to sign up your team either for dodgeball or for soccer there, and then for the kids. We have soccer programs as well. We've got for the youngest ones, those between the ages of three and five. We have our start smart soccer and then for the older kids, ranging from about seven years old to 11.

We do have a youth soccer league and that really kicks off in december, but you can start signing up in mid-october so again just contact our office for more information on those sports programs for kids, either on the website or by phone.

Hello, my name is jay nelson, I'm with buncombe county parks, greenways and recreation services and we're down here at the buncombe county sports park.

It's that time of year that we begin to offer home school pe classes we're going to be doing two six-week sessions at 15 per session. There is a additional discount for second and third children.

You may attend one day of the session at three dollars per day, but you have to pay for all of the days you want to attend once you start the session. If you have any questions, you can give me a call at 250-4269 or email me at j.nelson, buncombecounty.org.

Welcome back to come out and play october is a wonderful month for celebrating fall and halloween and boy do we have some fun in store for you, but before we get to all that, here's carolyn in black mountain to tell you about the dedication of their community garden. I'm here at.

Lake tomahawk park, which is where our community garden, was actually founded just about oh gosh, 14 years ago by dr john wilson, who lives right nearby on the lake here and we're pleased to announce that we've recently officially named the community garden after dr wilson and there's lots of ways you can get involved with that program at the community garden. We really focus on growing food, for donation, for folks in need in our valley, and every monday morning from 9 am to noon.

You can come down to the garden, help with the harvest and then take some produce home for your own table. We also have volunteer times on friday afternoons from 3 to 5 pm and that focuses a little more on just doing garden projects and weeding and mulching, and that so that sort of thing not as much on the harvest. But again, if you come for that time, we do offer some vegetables for you to take home for your own table.

We're out here at lake julian and we're going to be getting ready soon. For the october 1st annual scarecrow festival and craft show looking for vendors, I'm looking for scarecrows anybody need 500.

best in show, and the scarecrow division will bring you that one hundred dollars for first place in individuals or one hundred dollars in groups or families the crafters need to register no later than september. The 23rd we're looking for crafters that have home skills a little bit of home textures to it. You're also judged on what looks best for the craft. Booth big prize will be given away for that. The spaces are 35 for 12 by 12. 40.

I'm david blinn, I'm the manager at lake julian park. I just wanted to remind everyone out there that we're open year round at lake julian park coming up in the fall. Hopefully with some cooler temperatures. We still offer lots of different activities, we'll have lots of boat. Rentals fishing actually gets much better at lake julian in the winter. So, if you're looking to come out and have some fun a picnic with your family or just want to fish or go boating, come and see us at lake julian park.

Julian is such a beautiful place so make sure you go out and visit if you like to play disc golf, there's a tournament coming up and here's jay to give you the details on when and where cbn.

County rec departments are gathering together for our second annual region, nine sidewinder disc golf tournament to be held october, 15th and 16th. The cost is twenty dollars per player or forty dollars per team. This is a t, a two team format. With a captain's choice. The three divisions are co-ed rec and open. Each player will play 36 rounds of golf.

The different regions are mars: hill, fletcher, black mountain and waynesville. The championship will be held at richmond hill on sunday october 16th for more information. You can give me a call at 250-4269 or email me at j.nelson at buncombecounty.org.

Hey all you runners out there, it's almost time for the annual rock the quarry race from what I hear it is the hardest hill in western north carolina makes me tired just thinking about it, so here's renee to tell you more about it. Coming.

Up in october, we have rock the quarry grove stone. Quarry here in black mountain will be sponsoring their annual quarry run. This run is not easy. It's for somebody, that's looking for a challenge and a lot of fun. It's located here in black mountain at grovestone rock quarry.

Angie, my name is grace young buncombe, county parks, greenways and recreation services, and I'm here to invite you to our trip to the pisgah inn for a lunch october, the 24th we'll cruise up the parkway, make our way to the pisgah inn for our annual lunch. It's dutch treat so remember to bring your money, bring something warm to wear, because it's usually a little breezy and cool up there. Buncombe county has been working fearlessly on building greenways throughout buncombe county. Like this one. Here back in june, the connect buncombe campaign was announced. Here's lucy crown to tell you more.

Buncombe county parks, greenways recreation services and our buncombe county greenway commission are conducting a greenway master plan for all of buncombe county.

If you go online to www.buncomcounty.org connect, we have all the information you need about upcoming events that have to do with our master planning process, and we also have a survey to take. It would take about 15 minutes of your time and provide us with very valuable information about how you see a greenway program within our county before.

You know we'll be walking all over buncombe county right now. The kids in black mountain can walk by participating in the international walk to school day. Carolyn's going to tell us more about that and how to take part in a bicycle safety class black.

Mountain is proud to offer a safe routes to school program. That's funded through the north carolina division of transportation.

Through that grant, we do offer programs to help encourage kids to walk and bike to school, utilizing our greenways and our sidewalks in town this fall. We will be offering some events around that on october 5th, that is, international, walk to school day. So, look for some information on an event held on the morning of wednesday october 5th. Last year we met up in a central location and then all walked together to the primary and elementary schools.

As a group, it was a lot of fun, so we'll be sending home flyers with with students about that event. Another event we'll be doing is a safety shindig, where we partner with the primary school to offer an event where we talk about all different kinds of safety issues, including bicycle safety for kids. So we offer as part of that event a bike rodeo, where kids can kind of try out the rules of the road in a safe setting, get their bike checked out and make sure their helmets fit correctly.

That will be probably at the end of september. So again just look for information coming home with your kids from the primary elementary schools and also, of course, check our website at bmrecreation.com.

Welcome back to come out and play now it's time to talk about all those halloween activities that we have in store for you in black mountain and in buncombe county. Here's renee to tell you what's planned in black mountain.

It's hard to believe but fall is just around the corner and with fall comes our annual kids carnival. The kids carnival is held at the carver community center and it will be on saturday october 29th from 6 to 7 30 pm. It is a free event for the entire family and it's great for kids, kids toddler on up to fifth grade.

The carnival will consist of games, bounce house, snacks, magicians, clowns, all kinds of great fun things for the kids to stay safe during the holiday weekend, so bring your kids out on the 29th, dressed in costume, bring a bag to collect some candy and the camera to capture some memories and we'll see you at the carver community center. Now it's time for our halloween event, the haunted pool lagoon will start october 29th at 12 noon, we'll have the scariest costumes and the prettiest costume contest come on by at 12 sign up for our costume contest and then at one o'clock, we'll open the pool, bring a can of food and one dollar for mana food bank and come and get in the pool.
