From YouTube: School Committee Meeting 4-13-23
Description
City of Chelsea, Chelsea Public Schools
B
B
B
Awesome
folks,
happy
Thursday
and
I
hope
everybody
got
Sebastian
sunshine
today,
right
before
spring
break,
we
have
about
two
more
meetings
to
go
until
the
end
of
our
school
year
and
I
just
want
to
remind
folks
that
we
do
have
translation
services
available,
and
so,
if
folks
do
need
any
translation
services
feel
free.
Do
we
have
that
if
you
can
raise,
if
our
translator
can
raise
their
hand,
if
anybody
requires
translation
this
evening,
I
just
want
to
thank
everybody.
B
That's
present
here
in
person
in
the
chambers,
as
well
as
those
joining
us
virtually
and
with
that
said,
can
I
have
a
motion
to
approve
the
minutes
of
the
regular
meeting
on
March
30th
2023.
B
B
D
Behalf
of
the
to
go
to
ask
for
approval
of
the
school
committee
to
take
a
group
of
students
to
shapley
Bunk
House
in
New
Hampshire,
just
at
the
start
of
February
vacation
was
a
wonderful
trip.
As
you
might
imagine,
a
number
of
students
now
want
to
become
part
of
Outdoors
Club.
So
we
are
here
asking
for
approval
of
the
school
committee
to
take
a
second
group
of
students
to
mount
cardigan
New
Hampshire.
So
this
is
another
bunk
house
in
New
Hampshire.
D
It
would
be
for
an
overnight
trip,
leaving
Friday
May
5th
and
we're
turning
on
Saturday,
the
6th
with
a
group
of
16
students
and
three
or
four
chaperones.
Many
of
these
students
did
not
have
a
chance
to
go
on
the
last
trip,
so
we're
hoping
that
we
can
take
another
group
of
students
to
have
the
same
wonderful
experience
that
their
classmates
have
already
had.
E
A
I
do
have
a
few
things.
First,
I
would
like
to
acknowledge
that
our
Chelsea
High
School
advanced
placement
scores
have
surpassed
the
state
and
National
averages.
So
we're
really
excited
about
that.
A
So
per
reporting
data
released
by
Jesse
41
of
Chelsea
High
School
students
passed
their
AP
exams
in
2022,
exceeding
both
the
Massachusetts
passing
rate,
which
was
a
30.5
percent
and
the
national
passing
rate,
which
was
a
21.6
percent
to
pass
an
AP
exam.
A
student
must
score
a
three
out
of
five
or
higher,
so
the
41
passing
rate
is
chs's
third
highest
AP
pass
rate
since
2015.
A
students
posted
notable
scores
on
the
AP
calc,
a
b
exam
and
the
AP
Spanish
language
exam.
The
22
passing
rate
in
calc
a
b
is
C
chs's
highest
percentage
ever
on
that
exam
in
a
single
year.
So
students
in
Chelsea
continue
to
show
post-pandemic
academic
growth
and
recovery,
and
our
passing
AP
scores
increased
by
nearly
10
percent
compared
to
the
2021
data.
So
we're
real
excited
about
that.
We're
trending
in
the
right
direction
and
I
just
want
to
I
want
to
congratulate
our
Educators
and
our
students.
A
So
that's
exciting,
and
with
that
we
also
had
a
special
recognition
but
Mass
Insight
Education
and
Research
named
Monique
Monica,
salima
she's,
a
AP
Calculus,
a
b
teacher
from
Chelsea
High
School
as
a
2023
Partners
in
education
at
partners
and
Excellence
teacher
award
recipient
for
her
exemplary
work
and
advanced
placement,
stem
and
English
program,
and
she
is
among
16
Massachusetts
AP
teachers
that
were
recognized
for
their
outstanding
contributions,
and
so
we
have
an
award
for
her.
She
couldn't
be
here
tonight,
but
we
just
want
to
congratulate
her
as
well.
A
F
You
Dr
Aveda.
This
will
be
quick
tonight.
We
will
start
with
our
district-wide
daily
attendance,
some
good
news
as
we
compare
this
month's
attendance
to
attendance
for
March
compared
to
February.
We've
had
improvement
over
the
previous
month
in
all
grades,
with
the
exception
of
grades
3,
8,
9
and
12..
All
other
grades
improve
their
attendance
from
February
to
March.
When
we
compare
last
year's
total
attendance
rate
to
this
year's
total
attendance
rate,
it's
not
as
positive
compared
to
last
year.
F
Let's
keep
in
mind
as
we're
looking
at
the
yearly
average
we're
also
taking
into
account
the
famed
triple
demek
of
flu
RSV
and
covid,
which
definitely
hurt
our
attendance
this
year.
But
I
do
want
to
commend
particularly
grades.
10
11
and
grade
12
has
a
big
jump.
Senioritis
is
not
kicked
in
yet
and
grade.
12
is
doing
a
really
good
job
with
their
attendance
to
see
or
historically
that's
been
our
biggest
struggle.
So
something's
going
on
in
grade
12,
that's
getting
kids
to
school.
So
I'd
love
to
hear
more
about.
F
Each
year
we
were
shaky
a
little
bit
in
the
middle
of
the
year
because
we
were
up
around
four
percent
by
January,
but
we're
holding
steady
last
year's
dropout
rate
was
6.06
percent
this
year,
it's
currently
4.48
and
with
only
a
little
ways
to
go
left
in
the
school
year,
we're
hoping
no
one
else
drops
out
and
we
can
maintain
that
4.48
percent
rate,
which
would
be
a
drop
of
1.5
percent
over
the
previous
year
under
the
previous
year,
so
we're
doing
okay,
there
part
of
that
had
to
do
with
the
month
of
March.
F
F
As
you
can
see,
at
the
ELC
we
had
10
new
enrollees
and
seven
students
leave
the
district
at
the
elementary.
It
was
equal
14
in
and
14
out
at
the
middle
school
and
high
school.
We
had
a
lot
more.
In
than
out.
We
have
high
school
teachers
here.
You
probably
feel
that
the
middle
school
we
had
18
in
and
only
two
out
and
the
high
school
we
had
34
in
and
10
out
for
a
total
of
76
students
newly
enrolled
on
the
month
of
month
of
March
and
33.
F
B
B
B
Appreciate
it
next
up,
we
do
have
an
update
from
our
student
representative,
so
I'll,
let
you
take
the
mic.
G
Hello
I
hope
everybody's
having
a
good
night.
So
it's
just
going
to
be
me
today.
Unfortunately,
Carla
had
to
work
today.
So
it's
just
gonna,
be
me:
I
do
have
a
few
updates,
positive
ones,
very
good
ones.
So,
first,
starting
with
our
security,
we
have
received
new
staff.
I've
been
noticing
around
the
school
I
see
new
faces
a
lot
more
teachers,
I
see
yeah,
that's
one
of
them.
Today
we
had
a
drill
which
we
didn't
really
have
years
before.
G
So
I'm
really
glad
that
now
we're
taking
more
precaution
into
knowing
what
we
should
do
in
situations,
especially
like
with
everything
that's
going
on
right
now
in
the
world
and
a
lot
of
different
schools,
it's
good
that
we're
taking
into
account
that
we
should
know
what
to
do
in
situations
like
that.
Next
I
just
wanted
to
First
congratulate
any
seniors
that
are
graduating
this
year.
G
Graduation
seems
to
be
kicking
in
now.
I
know
a
lot
of
people
that
I
know
are
getting
a
little
bit
of
senioritis
a
little
bit,
but
we
have
amazing
counselors,
so
I
just
wanted
to
also
give
them
a
little
shout
out
there.
The
counselors
are
working
really
hard
to
push
everyone
to
graduate
this
year,
especially
mine,
and
then
the
last
one
is
just
prom.
So
we
have
a
problem
coming
up.
A
lot
of
students
are
really
excited
for
that.
A
So
if
you
look
at
our
personal
updates,
we
are
still
hiring.
There
are
a
lot
of
professional
paraprofessionals
that
have
been
hired
and
yes,
security
guards
specifically
for
the
high
school.
So
they
are
you'll,
see
that
noted
here.
Our
demographic
data
we've
hired
33,
Caucasian,
52,
Hispanic,
10
black
and
then
5
Asian,
Pacific
Islander.
So
I'd
like
to
that's
our
Personnel
report
and
then
our
enrollment
is
increasing.
A
We
are
currently
now
at
6283
students,
so
we
are
going
a
little
bit
but
and
it's
again
we're
still
I
always
say
my
my
marker
is
6200
students,
which
was
the
number
we
were
at
in
2019
2020,
actually
pre-pandemic,
so
we're
a
little
higher
with
83
students.
So
I
would
like
to
commend
both
the
Personnel
report
and
the
enrollment
report
for
the
record.
B
C

A

C
B
Six

the

Please
Mr,
O'regan.
B
C
H
B
Three
absent
the
motion
passes
next
up.
We
have
considering
consideration
and
action
to
accept
the
recommendation
of
the
superintendent
to
approve
a
field
trip
to
mount
cardigan
in

from
May
5th
2023
to
May

2023.
roll

please
Mr.
H
D
H
B
The
for
the
folks
at
home
that
weren't
able
to
hear
that
we
do
have
four
chaperones
that
are
be
that
are
going
to
be
going
on
that
field
trip
to
ensure
that
there's
that
one
to
ten
ratio
for
our
field
trip
I
hope
you
folks
enjoy
that
trip
up
to
New
Hampshire
great.
That's.
B
B
All
right
well
I
just
want
to
say
I
hope
everyone
has
an
amazing
spring
break
I
know
for
teachers,
students
and
any
staff
members.
This
is
prime
time
of
the
year
where
you
may
feel
like
you
need
that
well-deserved,
rest
and
so
I
hope
you
take
some
time
to
rejuvenate
this
Spring
Break,
so
we're
ready
and
back
at
it.
B
C
Is
Passover,
it
was
just
Easter,
so
happy
belated
Easter
to
everybody,
Happy
Passover
to
everybody
and
Happy
Blessed
Ramadan
to
everybody
still
celebrating.
Yes,
yes
thank.
