From YouTube: Cupertino Spelling Bee 2020: Grades 4 and 5
Description
The City of Cupertino hosts its Third Annual Spelling Bee, recorded January 25, 2020 at the Cupertino Community Hall.
This program features students from the fourth and fifth grades participating in a fun and educationally enriching event hosted by the Cupertino Parks and Recreation Department.
A
Good
afternoon,
I
would
like
to
welcome
everyone
to
the
2020
city
of
Cupertino,
spelling
bee
I'm.
Still
mr.
G
and
I
am
still
the
math
Olympiads
instructor
for
this
city
and
yes,
I
will
be
your
spelling,
master
and
emcee.
For
this
event,
we
are
excited
to
have
our
Cupertino
youth
engage
in
these
educationally
enriching
events
and,
as
you
could
see,
artistically
enriching
events
as
well,
and
we
are
proud
of
our
contestants
who
will
be
showcasing
their
spelling
skills
for
us
now.
Everybody
I
would
like
to
introduce
our
judges
in
today's
competition.
A
On
our
judging
panel,
we
have
Robin
McCreight,
who
is
to
children's
supervising
librarian
for
the
Cupertino
library
and
our
head
judge
for
this
event,
Emma
Siegel,
who
is
a
former
co
organizer
of
the
Spelling
Bee,
and
an
executive
assistant
at
a
local
tech
company
and
Kelly
Tong,
who
is
a
freshman
at
Monta,
Vista,
High,
School
and
chair
of
our
Cupertino
teen
Commission.
We
would
like
to
thank
our
judges
for
sharing
their
time
with
us
today
and
being
ardent
supporters
of
the
city
of
Cupertino.
Please
applaud
them
now.
A
We
would
also
like
to
send
special
thanks
to
the
following
individuals.
If
you
are
here,
please
stand
so
you
can
be
recognized
audience.
Please
hold
your
applause
until
all
six
have
been
introduced.
First
of
the
Elizabeth
Shea,
who
works
in
the
youth
and
teen
programs
team
and
it's
a
primary
organizer
of
this
event.
A
She
did
all
the
hard
jobs-
and
we
would
not
all
be
here
today
without
her
support,
ray
Delgado
and
Pete
Coughlin
Eze
and
robert
kim
are
recording
this
event
they're,
actually
doing
so
in
the
building
next
door
and
we'll
be
posting
it
online
in
February.
I
am
sure
I'm
going
to
be
the
butt
of
many
jokes
since
I
was
the
one
that
pulled
out
the
microphone,
but
the
rest
of
the
technical
support
staff
is
working
in
there.
A
Ron
Bullock,
who
worked
hard
to
set
up
this
room
for
our
spelling
bee
and
finally,
over
there
Danny
mestizo.
He
puts
in
a
huge
number
of
programs
for
our
city
as
the
recreation
coordinator,
along
with
Elizabeth,
he
is
the
driving
force
behind
the
Cupertino
spelling
bee
audience
participants.
Please
show
your
appreciation
by
thanking
our
organizers
enthusiastically.
A
A
Last
year
a
cell
phone
went
off
during
the
competition.
The
emcee
last
year
was
nice
about
it.
I
won't
be
I
might
eat
your
cell
phone
if
it
goes
off
so
turn
it
on
silent.
Now,
number
two
please
always
remain
quiet
and
allow
our
participants
to
focus
any
help
from
the
audience
to
our
participants
is
forbidden.
I
encourage
you
to
try
to
spell
the
words
in
your
head,
as
the
students
attempt
to
do
so
on
stage,
but
be
careful
not
to
lip
spell.
A
Don't
limp
spell
as
a
student
might
use
that
as
a
clue
unintentionally
and
number
three.
We
request
that
all
participants
stay
until
the
end
of
the
event,
because
we
will
have
a
closing
ceremony
where
we
will
be
giving
all
participants
a
certificate
and
a
spelling
bee
goodie
bag,
as
well
as
the
main
prize
to
our
winner.
Now
I
would
like
to
talk
to
our
participants.
First
I
thank
each
of
you
for
joining
us
today.
A
We're
proud
to
have
each
of
you
shut
cheering
your
skills
with
us
now
I'm
going
to
give
you
some
information
about
today's
spelling
bee.
When
it's
your
turn
to
spell
I'm
going
to
say
the
word,
and
at
that
time
you
may
do
any
of
the
following
four
things
you
may
ask
for
the
origin
of
the
word
say:
origin
of
the
word
go
ahead,
say
it
you
can
ask
for
that.
A
You
can
ask
for
the
definition
of
the
word
say
definition,
you
can
ask
me
to
repeat
the
word
say
repeat
the
word
and
you
can
ask
me
to
use
it
in
a
sentence.
Say
use
it
in
a
sentence
all
right
when
you
are
ready
to
begin
spelling,
remember
to
say
the
word
spell
the
word
and
then
say
it
again.
So
the
judges
and
I
know
that
you
are
finished.
Let's
make
sure
we
understand
that
students
repeat
after
me
say
it
spell.
It
say
it.
B
B
B
A
A
Please
remember
this
to
students
last
year
knew
the
spelling
of
their
first
word,
but
they
got
too
excited
and
they
started
spelling
before
they
had
calmed
down
and
they
got
their
letters
out
of
order.
Remember
once
you
start,
you
can't
change
it.
Does
everybody
understand
that?
Okay,
now,
when
you
are
done,
I
will
be
relying
on
the
judges,
and
they
will
tell
me
whether
the
word
was
spelled
correctly.
If
your
spelling
is
correct,
you
simply
sit
down
in
your
assigned
seat.
What,
if
you
don't
spell
it
correctly?
A
Well
we're
going
to
do
something
new
this
year.
One
of
the
weird
things
about
a
spelling
bee
is
that
everyone,
except
for
one
person,
finishes
by
misspelling.
A
word
think
about
that
all
of
you
here,
except
for
one,
will
misspell
a
word
today
that
leaves
kind
of
a
sour
taste
in
your
mouth
at
the
end
of
the
competition
and
I.
Don't
like
that.
So
today,
when
you
do
not
spell
a
word
correctly,
this
is
what
we're
going
to
do.
First
I
will
give
you
the
correct
spelling
so
that
you
know
what
it
is.
A
Then
I
want
you
to
nod
your
head
so
that
you
understand
what
the
correct
spelling
is
and
as
you
leave
the
stage
right
over
by
that
chair
as
you
leave
the
stage
and
then
you
sit
with
your
parents
in
the
audience,
everyone
will
applaud
you
for
misspelling
the
word
audience.
We
will
give
each
student
a
ten
clap
when
they
leave
the
stage.
Just
like
this.
A
Very
good
finally,
students,
as
you
exit
on
the
way
out
you
can
get
that
sour
taste
out
of
your
mouth
by
taking
a
Red
Vine
Kelly
is
going
to
put
the
red
vines
right
over
there
on
that
chair.
After
all,
this
is
a
spelling
bee.
Bees
make
honey
and
honey
is
sweet,
but
honey
is
way
too
messy.
So
we're
going
with
red
vines
so
take
one
of
those
on
your
way
down
now,
students
I,
encourage
you
at
this
point
to
relax.
A
Everybody
take
a
deep
breath
and
before
you
get
up
here,
take
another
deep
breath
before
you
start
speaking
into
the
microphone.
In
fact,
to
put
all
of
us
in
the
right
mood,
we're
all
going
to
do
something
quite
silly
to
break
the
ice.
The
students
in
my
fourth
to
sixth
grade
math
Olympiads
class
will
have
a
homework
problem
this
week
about
the
eight
children
in
the
double
family,
we're
going
to
say
all
eight
of
their
names.
Now
nice
and
slow
audience
and
participants
repeat
these
names
after
me,
boo-boo
CooCoo,
doo,
doo,.
A
Excellent
students,
when
you
spell
your
words
today,
do
so
in
the
same
manner.
The
most
important
thing
I
can
tell
you.
Is
this
don't
rush?
This
is
the
spelling
bee,
not
the
spelling
race.
Think
it
through
before
you
start:
okay,
okay,
okay,
call,
nice
and
easy
contestant
number
one.
Please
come
to
the
microphone.

A
Thank
you
for
reminding
me
number
eight,
as
you
can
see
now
at
last,
we
have
two
spellers
remaining,
which
means
we
automatically
enter
into
a
spell
off
and
at
this
point
the
rules
change
just
a
little
bit.
Okay,
here's
how
this
works!
I'll
ask
you
to
spell
a
word:
okay,
this
works
for
both
of
you.
I'll
ask
a
participant.
To
spell
a
word
and
if
the
participant
spells
the
word
correctly,
then
we
just
move
on
to
the
next
person.
A
If
you
misspell
a
word,
don't
leave
yet
I
will
ask
the
other
person
to
spell
the
same
word
correctly.
If
you
do,
if
the
other
person
spells
the
same
word
correctly,
they
still
have
to
spell
one
more
word
correctly
to
be
the
champion
if
they
do
they're
the
champion.
If
they
do
not
spell
the
second
word
correctly,
then
we
just
start
the
process
again
and
by
the
way,
if
both
participants
misspell
the
same
word,
which
happened
last
year
in
the
final
two
will
just
go
on
to
the
next
word.
A
A
But
it
wouldn't
have
mattered
either
way
on
the
J.
It's
a

That's
a
mistake!
All
right!
Let

go
all
right.

All
right,
because
I
made
the
mistake
all
right
number
three:
this
is
this
is
called
good
fortune
because
of
my
mistake.
We're
gonna
pretend
that
didn't
happen,
because
I
gave
him
the
first
two
letters
of
the
word
which
I'm
not
supposed
to
do.
You
may
sit
down
number
eight
number
three,
you
get
another
word.

are

I
actually
think
it
not
just
you

by
the
way
this
was
a
very
difficult
competition.
People
were
really
making
us
sweat,
I'm
sure
the
judges
were
going,
I,
don't
know
if
we're
gonna
make
it
here,
we
may
be
running
out
of
words
all
right,
I
want
to.
Thank
you.
First
of
all,
for
remaining
to
the
end.

listen
up
all
students
who
stayed
since
you
stayed
and
that
even
include
you
little
brothers
and
sisters.
I
will
give
you
another
Red

on
the
way
out.
A
A
I'm
going
to
do
my
best
with
this,
please
follow
these
directions
so
that
we
can
do
this
quickly
and
easily
students.
Looking
at
me,
please
good,
okay,
what
I'm
going
to
do?

is
I'm
going
to
call
each

them
up
to

by

audience.
Please
hold
your
applause
until
everybody
has
made
their

on
stage
when
you
come
up,
I
want
you
to
shake
my
hand
and
then
shake
the
judges
hands
and
get
your

followed
by
your

I
A
Thank
you.
Yes,
parents
in
case
you
want
a

The
perfect
time
to
get
it
is,
as
the
student
is
coming
up
with
the

guns.
If
you
want
a
picture,
they'll
be
right
there
and
they'll
take
a
post
and
then
the
next
student
of
those
so
get
your

ready.

telling

that.
