A
Hello
I'm
Chuck
Burrell.
We
are
pleased
to
present
another
update
from
the
public
works
department
in
the
City
of
Des
Moines.
We
have
a
number
of
different
divisions
in
the
department.
These
include
streets,
sewers,
sanitation
and
forestry.
Today,
I've
invited
our
municipal
arborist
David
yan
from
the
Forestry
Division
to
provide
some
information
about
forestry
activities.
Take
it
away,
David
Thank.
B
Let
me
first
of
all
remind
you
of
some
of
the
many
benefits
of
trees,
for
instance,
when
that
cooling
effect
of
a
young
healthy
tree
is
equivalent
to
ten
room
size,
air
conditioners,
operating
20
hours
a
day
that
statistic
is
provided
to
us
by
the
US
Department
of
Agriculture,
dr.
Greg
Macpherson
of
the
center
for
urban
forest
research
tells
us
this.
If
you
plant
a
tree
today
on
the
west
side
of
your
home
in
five
years,
your
energy
bills
should
be
three
percent
left
in
15
years.
B
The
savings
will
be
nearly
twelve
percent
and
more
news
comes
to
us.

the
Arbor
Day
Foundation
trees
can
be
a
stimulus
to
economic
development,
attracting
new
business
and
tourism.
Commercial
retail
areas
are
more
attractive
to
shoppers.
Apartments,
rent
more
quickly,
tenants,
stay
longer
and
space
in
a
wooded
setting
is
more
valuable
to
sell
or
rent
I
further
want
to
remind
you
of
the
great
benefits
of
street
trees,
in
particular
when
the
tree
shades
the
street.
It
lowers
air
temperature
over
parking
spaces
and
next
to
your
home
or
business.
B
B
B
Last
year,
more
than
800
Des
Moines
residents,
just
like
you
requested
that
we
plant
a
tree
on
public
space
adjacent
to
their
property.
By
the
end
of
2012,
we
had
planted
more
than
1600
street
trees
and
people
are
excited
to
see
the
positive
changes
in
our
neighborhoods.
So,
if
you'd
like
to
have
a
city
of
des
moines
plant
a
tree
on
the
planting
strip
at
the
curb
in
front
of
your
property,
here's
how
to
go
about
it.
Call
our
24-hour
customer
service
center
at
283,
49,
50,
that
to
a
3,
49
50.
B
B
Here
are
three
simple
things
we
ask
from
you
in
return:
do
occasional,
weeding
at
the
base
of
the
tree,
install
a
2
to
3
inch
layer
of
fresh
wood
mulch
over
the
root
zone
each
spring?
Last
and
most
importantly,
you
agree
to
water
the
tree
two
to
three
times
per
week
during
the
first
one
or
two
years
until
the
tree
is
established
and
also
during
any
drought.
