When
our
citizens
request
that
a
street
tree
be
planted
on
the
parking
in
front
of
their
home
or
business,
we
invite
them
to
commit
to
watering
that
new
tree
to
keep
the
base
of
the
tree
free
from
weeds
and
to
put
some
mulch
on
each
spring
to
keep
weeds
out
and
keep
moisture
on
the
roots.
Many
of
our
citizens
also
plant
trees
on
their
private
property
and
they
want
to
nurture
their
investment
by
taking
care
of
their
tree
to
the
best
of
their
ability.
B
The
single
most
important
thing
a
property
owner
can
provide
for
a
tree
is
water,
so
the
primary
purpose
of
today's
video
segment
is
to
coach
our
residents
on
how
to
water
a
new
tree.
An
important
part
of
information
about
applying
water
to
the
soil.
Is
this
when
you
put
water
on
the
surface
of
the
soil,
the
water
travels
laterally
quicker
than
it
sinks
into
the
soil.
B
Therefore,
if
you
were
to
use
a
shower
attachment
on
the
end
of
your
hoes
say
for
three
minutes,
most
of
the
water
applied
will
actually
go
sideways
and
perhaps
be
unavailable
for
use
by
the
roots
of
the
tree.
So
today,
I
want
to
introduce
you
to
the
bucket
method
of
slow
watering.
Many
households
have
an
old
five-gallon
bucket
in
the
garage,
maybe
left
over
from
paint
or
some
other
task.
Let's
put
that
bucket
to
use
and
learn
how
to
slow
water.
B
B
Look
limp
and
thirsty
do
not
wait
until
the
leaves
are
brown
and
crisp,
and
there
you
have
it
the
slow
method,
slow
water
method
to
keep
your
new
tree
happy
and
healthy.
The
reason
this
method
works
so
well
is
that
number
one,
the
bucket
sitting
at
the
base
of
the
tree
serves
as
a
visual
reminder
to
water
at
least
twice
a
week.
The
bucket
is
the
perfect
measuring
cup.
B
Five
gallons
twice
weekly
is
adequate
in
normal
weather
conditions
and
you
simply
add
a
third
day
to
the
weekly
watering
when
it
is
dry
and
then
the
third
reason
it
works
is
because
the
slow
water
method
is
exactly
what
will
get
the
water
to
the
root
zone
so
enjoy
your
tree
and
take
pleasure
in
knowing
you've
learned
a
better
method
of
watering.
The.
B
Chuck,
just
like
humans
can't
survive
without
water,
so
our
trees
need
to
have
their
water
needs
met
in
a
timely
fashion.
Once
the
tree
is
established
in
a
year
or
two,
then
we
need
only
provide
water
during
times
of
drought.
I
would
like
to
thank
the
residents
of
Des
Moines
for
caring
about
trees
and
for
their
willingness
to
try
this
slow
watering
method
for
new
trees.
Trees
are
the
lungs
of
the
city,
providing
the
very
awk
sejoon
we
breathe.
