Join Ally Haire of Filecoin for a workshop titled "Making Data Useful with Decentralised Compute".

We are incredibly excited to welcome back a community favorite: From June 2-21, 2023 we are joining forces for the fourth year in a row with Protocol Labs, one of the ecosystem's biggest open-source research, development, and deployment laboratories. Their projects include IPFS, Filecoin, libp2p, and many more.

If you enjoyed last year's HackFS event, strap in—because this year will be even more phenomenal!

For the first time, we will have prizes from The Filecoin Virtual Machine (FVM) for a HackFS, a runtime environment for smart contracts (also called actors) on the Filecoin network. FVM brings user programmability to Filecoin, unleashing the enormous potential of an open data economy. We are excited to respond to a highly requested community demand after our successful hacks FVM Space Warp in February of this year and Hack FEVM which took place in November of last year with this!

In this video we walk through how to make your very own open source Text to Image script (stable diffusion on a GPU) and how to run it on Bacalhau - the decentralised computation platform.

This example aims to show how easy and efficient it is to analyse large datasets with Bacalhau - you do not need any prior knowledge of data science or machine learning to build along with us here!

This is example is built in python using the Tensorflow machine learning library and based on stable diffusion for text to image processing and aims to inspire you to build your own models to run on Bacalhau! Feel free to 'show us what you got' by connecting with us in Slack!

Full example documentation can be found here:

About Bacalhau:

Currently Filecoin is known for being a decentralised storage and retrieval network, providing over 17 EiB of distributed data storage capacity to the world through thousands of Storage providers globally.

We can think of this distributed storage layer of Filecoin as the Layer 0, while the ability to perform on-chain computation - or computation over state with FVM brings Layer 1 capabilities to the Filecoin stack.
Bacalhau then brings the additional capability for off-chain verifiable compute loads on large data to the Filecoin Network.. Making for some powerful tools enabling new and innovative applications to arise.

Bacalhau is a platform for faster, cost efficient, and more secure distributed computation, by running jobs next to where the data is generated and stored. Bacalhau enables users to run arbitrary Docker containers and WebAssembly (WASM) images as tasks, meaning little (or no) rewriting of the workflows that already work.

Why Bacalhau?
⚡ Process jobs fast: Jobs in Bacalhau are processed where the data was created and all jobs are parallel by default.
💰 Low cost: You get to save on ingress/egress fees you encounter whenever you move data around since jobs are processed where the data is created, as well as reusing idle computation (where available)
🔒 Secure: Data is not collected in a central location before processing, meaning all scrubbing and security can be applied at the point of collection, and a far more granular, code-based permission model.

What will you build with Bacalhau??

About this video:
Jim Pick is an avid community builder (fil-der!) and teacher in the Filecoin Network.
Here he takes us through an early demo of SimpleCoin: an EVM-compatible FVM Actor (the term used for programmability / smart contracts in the Filecoin ecosystem).

Jim has built several demo's which you can play around with and are designed to give you an idea of how actors work.

This latest addition can be found on his “FVM Actor Code Playground” notebook on ObservableHQ. It has the latest Lotus with FVM pre-release (Talc) packaged into Docker images, which are used to spin up an on-demand ephemeral localnet (on Kubernetes/Knative). This variant of the notebook includes the “simplecoin” Solidity smart contract, which you can modify and compile to EVM bytecode using a simple web service. Then you can use it to create an actor, and invoke EVM methods against it.

About the FVM:

Currently Filecoin is known for being a decentralised storage and retrieval network, providing over 17 EiB of distributed data storage capacity to the world through thousands of Storage providers globally.

And we can think of this distributed storage network as being the layer zero of the Filecoin Architecture Network because ..
Storage is really only the start!

We want to be able to compute and analyse over and with the data on the Filecoin network!

And this is the goal of the FVM - to enable users to be able to deploy their own smart contracts (or actors as they are termed in the Filecoin ecosystem) and unlock the ability to perform on-chain computation over state data.

This additional layer of capability - which we can consider to be the layer 1 of the network - adds programmability to the already robust, permissionless storage network that is Filecoin.

Smart contracts + storage = FVM.

This talk given by zenground0 in July of 2022 takes a deep dive into the actors that make up the computational model of the Filecoin protocol. Learn about why Filecoin uses actors, the different types of actors, and what the current eleven available Filecoin actors do. Understand the upgrades that have occurred since mainnet launch. As the Filecoin Virtual Machine (FVM) is developed, the capabilities of Filecoin actors will greatly expand along with the potential for the Filecoin Protocol, by decoupling adding functionality from protocol upgrades and allowing for independent user actors.

============================================================

What will you build??

Filecoin Virtual Machine (FVM) Lead Developer Raul talks through the current technical status of the FVM and outlines the next steps.

Main Points:

🎉 FVM Milestone 1 (M1) code - the Skyr Upgrade, is going live on the Filecoin Network on Tuesday 5th July 2022.

🦄 Milestone 2.1 (M2.1) will introduce EVM-compatible programmability to the Filecoin Network, and is now the next priority of FVM.

💻 This decision was made to ensure the dev's are able to bring their current skillset and knowledge to the FVM as well as meaning that the current EVM tooling will be able to be used to build on FVM.

💫 We also want to ensure a seamless developer and tooling experience on the native Filecoin Virtual Machine, so this goal will be running in parallel alongside of building the EVM-compatible FVM release

✅ Follow & contribute to the design decisions being made on the FVM M2.1 release by subscribing to
⭐ FVM-specs: https://github.com/filecoin-project/fvm-specs
⭐ FIP's: https://github.com/filecoin-project/FIPs

🎁 An early (alpha) version of the evm-compatible fvm code has been open sourced: https://github.com/filecoin-project/fvm-evm/

🌐 You can see our milestone goals on the website at https://www.fvm.filecoin.io

About this video:
Jim Pick is an avid community builder (fil-der!) and teacher in the Filecoin Network.
Here he takes us through an early demo on the use of Filecoin Actors (the term used for programmability / smart contracts in the Filecoin ecosystem)

Jim has built several demo's which are designed to give you an idea of how actors work and can be found here:
