Everyone has an idea for a killer app, but everyone has to start somewhere. It’s always a good idea to start with all the scaffolding needed for the project. We didn’t have a good starter application until now that could specify our requirements, such as runtime, dependency, and so on, and build a project structure in a minute. Many developers crafted their own version of the maven archetype, but now we have an official one from the Eclipse Foundation that is simple to download and use in a matter of minutes.

In this talk, I’ll show you how to use it to create a Jakarta EE application in under a minute. Furthermore, I will demonstrate how a developer can contribute to the ongoing project and help enrich the starter project.

All right, um hello, everyone- this is welcome to my session uh I'm gonna, speak about the Jakarta startup, the new initiative and the decrease foundation for Jakarta EE. uh So all right, let's uh yeah uh it will be interesting. I'll I'll be I, have prepared a couple of demo for you, so uh yeah something can go wrong in the demo, uh I mean it's, it can be right, but I'll try my best to uh show you what uh we have been doing on this check out the starter.

So moving on, um let's go ahead with the agenda. First, um okay, so I'll introduce a bit of E I mean. Obviously this is a conference objective, so I'm sure everyone already know about it, but I'll just touch a little bit all right and then um I'll introduce the the eclipse starter for Jakarta. That's we are going to you, know demo and show you and you know how we're gonna use them and how to build application and run application on top of that.

So those are the things um and if you want to contribute um because the project is still ongoing and under active development. So if you have a statements, so we have a lot of lot to do if you are interested in contributing I'll touch on. How can you can do that a bit and if you have question, feel free to ask them so I'll I'll. Take those questions end of the session end of the talk uh you know once I have covered all this demo, I have prepared.

So we can take those questions later, so you have to wait until the end, uh all right moving on um so all right, so I I'm, pretty sure uh you know you already know about it. After being maintained, maintained by the the Jafar Community process, which is in shortly called gcp, Java e e is now maintained by the eclipse Foundation under the name, which is interesting name right. uh So uh this uh in fact enable us to be more geared towards open standard for governance.

You know open source development and you know a lot of other things, including um it's also provided a great way to incorporate openness to all vendors. You know clear people, all those things well defined specification on procedures and you know in level benefit and a lot of other vendors like Oracle IBM fire people that are, you know, contributing this. So it's an amazing time, basically for the community and 40 technology itself.

uh So end of the day out, I would say the community participation and contribution plays a vital role um in in any open source initiative, and it's true foreign as well. um So today, uh basically, what I'm gonna show you is to ensure you know more users and participation and give them easy for you. We have started a new project called Chaka test standard. um Let's learn a bit about it right, uh so that's that's.

What I'm essentially going to demo you right all right uh so far, uh the the technology and Community is doing great right. The one thing that's missing our outset: it's not missing it's. Obviously there are a lot of different ways, but uh you know not in a formulated in his speech, one official places. So what I'm trying to say is I'm referring the you know, started project. There has been a lot of independent work done by you know: various respected um community members uh and uh and therefore there are numerous moving archetype available.

Where you can. You know, use this archetype to build project in different ways. uh There are multiple ways you can still check out the applications, uh but until uh you know, we didn't have one place to host all of them right. So that's where we're gonna work on um so I believe it's. It's definitely great to have. uh You know many archive. The issue is that um you know we sort of assume that the developer is already familiar with the Marvin and all those archetypes right.

However, in two days right, it's much more crucial to have a more portable uh and more palatable and you know attractive to the developer, particularly the new one, the fresher one or we're gonna Target right. So um the other framework, like you know, never held on microphobia microprobel, has done that that they have a standard project where you can go and you know select, specify your requirement and click.

It will give you a uh you know: project which is uh basically in under in a zip folder, and you can then you know start uh playing around it open with youth IDE and then you know run it. That will give a satisfaction right when you can see something working. That's give you a uh you know. You know it keeps you a pleasure right. So that's where we're trying to go um so yeah. So moving on uh what that uh you know what we have here is uh we have a website called start.jakatai.

So what you can do is you can go ahead and you know click on this link and open our new browser. So if you uh click on it, you'll find something like that. um The uh you know, the the basis is quite static basis still because we are still working on it. We're making progress.

We have um you know we have a lot of uh work in planned, uh so I'm, gradually, I'm gonna show you one by one what we're doing over there and how can you you can build an applications quickly so using this space? Currently, you can, you know, select your in Jakarta version profiles and you can provide your information, for example, group ID, artifact and version what it will give you a uh you know: it's a static site right now, but it's going to be dynamic soon, um uh so you can.

Copy this copy this you know text and you know, click on this and put on your terminal. Basically, that's the idea and you'll you'll put on Terminal. It will give you an archetype. It will give you a project idea, uh sorry project folder and in this folder you will have everything you needed to start with right, so it takes like under a minute. You can do all of those things right.

So I have done this and I do have a project that I built exactly using all of these things and and the project is here um so um you know it has everything right. It has form file, it is structure, um it has, like you, know all the necessary stuff to start and see see something on this screen um so yeah. So it takes uh a lot of way uh less to start with something right, um so it has a record which is basically you know.

We can use that code right, um Java, 60, Java, 17, I, guess and JavaScript from the JavaScript we can use all those interesting fancy stuff in Java record. Definitely is one of them and we have a uh related standpoint over here. It doesn't do anything, it's just you know. If we, if we press hello, it just return a you know, application response right and the problem that we can build. uh Whatever we want to build, we can add more resources more, you know less endpoints, um we can add. uh You know database.

We can add whatever necessary, but you need a starting point right. So that's what it is. It's give you a structure where you can. um You know start building your things. So uh if you want to run it, you can definitely run through a common line, but also you can use uh you use your private runtime to run it right. I have added the javos wildive while fly over here.

um So it's just easy. You can. You can just you know, click over here from idea, I'm sure similar things are available in the eclipse uh as well. So you can go ahead and do edit configuration right and then uh you can select your uh you know in private runtime right um so that way, and then, if you click on it, you'll see it's start immediately. I mean it doesn't take a lot of time. So that's an interesting aspect.

uh Interesting things, so once uh you are done that, um so let me see if I can, you know, uh show you a uh so some output on on this screen. So what we're gonna do is. uh Let me bring my um bring my uh browser over here. uh So if I click over here hello um I'll see it's returned a text right, it's it's in in Json, property, I'm, not sure if you can see, uh but I can increase the font every time and then you can see it.

So that's interesting right, so we we can see something on this screen. So that's a great starting point so that essentially we are trying to uh do with this. uh You know initiative, so um it's it's a starting point, but we are going to go deep. I will have more things in in the comics and slides. So all right, um so moving ahead, Let's see we want to you know like I, have just showed you the demos, so this slides is not necessarily important. All right.

um So next demo that I have prepared, which is it's it's a bit. uh You know a bit Rich compared to the earlier one. It was simple. It just had one rest endpoint right. What if we want to do more things, for example, we want to bring database right. We want to you, know multiple rest and plan. We can have uh create delete, update um all those functionalities right. uh So we need a need, those kind of uh structure. So uh there's a wig.

uh Let me um go ahead next slide, so I'll uh copy this link over here. So if I can, let's see if I can open it, um so that's the uh link. um uh So that's it! That's the uh that's! Where we're essentially working on uh with this initiative, which is Jacob test starter, it's it's uh in a GitHub right. You can definitely go ahead and read all those documentations code base. uh Whatever we want so you can see, um we have a few uh Marvin archetype available already.

You can copy one of them and build their project right so in in the end, we'll all need to move them in a started UI project right from the UI. You can do all of them, but we are going move moving their gas, usually right. So we have a couple of runtime available right now, for example uh in a class based Dom EE and we are continuously adding more. um So if you want to you know in uh contribute that would be, you know, welcome.

um So what we are going to do is I have copied one of them over here, for example, uh I I I copied this one Tommy and, uh and then this is the architect that I copied over here and I paste it on the you know, terminal and terminal. So you know it will ask you some questions like what sort of configuration you want. Group, ID, artifact, ID, chapter version, for example. This particular example: I promoted nine. You could do 10 as well right, so we have check out the 10 now available.

So it's up to you all right and you can provide the versions all of these things. After having all those information, it will create a structure. So I have done all of these things already um and yeah. So it has given me a uh project. um So that's that's the project. uh So it's it's quite this compared to the earlier one. uh It has everything right. It has Docker file. If you want to you know, you know, do it Docker, uh you know to containerize it. It has a Docker file as well.

It has form file, it has wrapper weapon wrapper. If you don't have Maven on your machine. That's also works. It's it's big, it's more portable right! Also! You know it has. uh Let me explore the project structure and a bit um so over here um it has entity. So it's it's a small Pro. You know project card project we The Entity is basically coffee, we're gonna, add a lot of coffee to it and I mean the entity. Has all this uh properties, for example, ID name right um price?

These are three is for now, but we can have more. You know as project kids, uh you know newer garment. We can keep on adding new stuff. It is also named Korea over here all this Jacka test stuff right. All these um you know, then it has politicians right uh all of those things and it has a repository over here and you can you know with this episode. You have all this method. You can write your new method over here. Whatever way you want, you can enrich this as you go on. It has logar right.

It has few months over here here and so, and also it has this endpoints over here. So we.

Points over here, um one is um the the root is coffee and then you can. You know, get all this coffee using these methods get call, and then you can create one with the post and also you can. You know, uh get particular one right, one two uh and then you can obviously delete one right.

um So let me start this application, so it's also take like under a minute. um It doesn't take a lot. um You know to run so if I click on this um it will able to run. The only thing is that I have to start stop the other um server over here that I've been running already. Otherwise the port will be conflicted right. So let me stop that and let's see if, if it started so, if it doesn't, I can start it again. uh So the you see it doesn't take a lot of time.

So now we have all these endpoints, which you can. You know, try out. So, let's, let's try to get all this coffee first and see if it works. So sound like it sounds like it's working right, um so we have all this coffee. uh It's it's a um you know, Jason response, and uh if you want to get a particular one we can, you know call this. This particular cough.

um You know endpoint right so, okay. Thirdly, but intelligent idea. Has this interesting feature that I'm currently using um you know you can hit on browser as well? That's also fine!

um So, whatever way you want to try it out, that's uh you know it's totally up to you and let's, let's create a one new coffee right, um so we have already three and if we want to create a new one, we can do the post request through this.

um So that's the post request and you can see it's already created and if we want to try the first one again, I'll get four.

um So that's what happened right initially, it has it had three. Now we have four so in full. uh You know Card application over here and and if you want to delete a particular one, for example you're going to delete two, we can do that. You can just you know, okay, so now, if I try again I'll see only three and the the second one has been deleted, so uh it has all this setup required. I mean uh this one running on a on memory. Database I have all this configuration over here.

This is persistence, conference uh purchases, dot, XML, and, if you want to uh you know, we have an initial data script, which is this right, um so you can have more of this. If we want to, if we don't need, we don't need them, it's totally up to you. So it's a whole thing right. It's a whole package. That's given you can just get all of them by just you know, typing one testing, one uh string on a terminal and you will get all this entire project and then you can run and try experimenting.

So that's the that's the uh thing that we want to bring to uh to. We have to give it to you so with this initial initiative project so um and it it doesn't, take a lot of time. So that's an interesting uh giveaway, a takeaway from this whole things right um so yeah and um right. uh So so, basically, basically that I have shown you the two places over here.

One is this, and this is going to be replacing future because we're currently working on this and there's another one which is this is the startup project. uh We have a lot of archetype over here, uh for example, this is the minimalist starter. That's I, have uh you know demoed the first and then we have registered and graduate will have more of this, and all of them will be available through um you know.

Eclipse are you know Jakarta e and uh the promise is basically, you know you can do it under a minute um and you can do it quickly and try out. If you want to Let's, create a project with this app, you can go there and you will specify a requirement. It will give you a uh you know, whole project carefully with all this necessary scaffolding right all these dependencies and there would be a starting point where you can just you know, try out. So that's the whole point of this Jakarta e startup project.

You can go here and you know, try out and see all these things and you can see. We have a lot of issues. We have been working, um so it's an actively development phase um so down the road will have more things coming all right. So let's go to these slides and and that's the demo right. If you run this project and go this URL, you will see and hit the hit. You know URL, you will get this space, so that's the that's what it uh you know this project. Essentially.

So if you run this and go to the you know, localhost 808 slash uh Jakarta Cafe, because that's the name of the project right. You can configure that whatever you can, uh but it's it's totally up to you um so anyway, um moving on over here.

um So that's the demo. I wanted to show you, uh but you know this slides, not even required card. So all right moving on now that all the other projects, other other framework, has a fancy. Nice UI right where you can go and specify requirement and you can generate a zip folder. uh So far what I have shown you uh was basically, you know using command line who likes command line right I mean especially if you are a new at your beginner developer. You will probably hate command line.

I want to get a project, uh you know in a zip, folder and then I can extract and immediately I want to work on it and I want to see it. I want to open it on my favorite, ID and, and you know, quickly, run it and see if it works even right. So that's the idea and that's why we have also working on a startup UI. That's a that's the base, that's it's! uh It's still under uh development. We have added. You know all this.

uh You know text box and if you feel all those things and then, if you click on generate button it will you will be able to download uh the zip folder. So how would I show you that demo as well uh all right so to do that? What I have to do is I have to run this project again.

um So let me stop the current running project so that it doesn't. The code doesn't get conflicted. um Okay. uh So what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna run it on again J for jbossual fly um server, you'll be server, so let if I run it um I'll, be able to uh show you the demo. So let me um quickly open my browser again.

um Sorry, so that's the that's the browser and, if I refresh this, if it's working okay so now I can specify our my things over here 9.1. uh It will be more detailed than this, obviously as we're working on on, and you can also you know, give us feedback, and you can also help us. uh You know you know using it um also contributing it and down the road, and you can choose a platform over here. Web profile code profile.

Doesn't matter how you are gonna choose it's going to give you a zip folder, and then you can specify a name. uh So, let's name it, um you know Jakarta starter demo right um and then you can specify your version name and if you click on generate button, so it will give you a j folder. That's that's still working right, it's it's! uh uh You know we have all this. We can. We just uh you, know we'll work on it, we'll add more things and and make it available for everyone to use it.

But that's essentially you know we want and the Checker test started uh uh Jeep full demo folder. You can open it with your any ID or favorite ID, and then you can choose your runtime. Also. There will be option in future that you can choose runtime from this from this uh you know window and you will be able to run it on your terminal.

um So those are things that we are still working on, uh but you know down, the road will have it so I'm really looking forward to um you know with this project I'm actively involved in this project and a lot of other respected. uh You know: Jakarta community members leaders are involved with this project, so uh I'm excited I'm, super excited and down the road.

We'll see a lot of interesting stuff, uh so yeah, so that's that's the three demo I had for you uh moving on and the questions gets to be uh I've been you know, telling you or I I have in fact, in this presentation. I have already.

uh You know stated several times that if you want to get impulse, you can get involved right. um If you want to contribute, you can contribute, it would be awesome right. It's a community work and everyone going to get it involved. Everyone going to contribute it's going to be an awesome result. So how you're gonna start with that? Well, you can start with joining the mailing list where we have all this discussion going on, and you know um you can digest all those you know information get used to with the initiative right.

uh Yeah, that's the first starting point, and if you have any feedback you can differently. You know, uh share your thoughts uh in the spelling, emailing list. That would be an awesome thing anyway. uh So how we're gonna start we're going to start with this link? um Where you can you can start?

Contributor agreement and then you can even start contributing. You can start writing the code um so yeah. That would be an awesome experience you can start with. uh There are plenty of uh you know issues available already over here. You can pick one and start discussion. You can even start discussion in the GitHub um issues as a comment, and you know that would be an awesome experience right. So yeah uh come on and join if you want to or if you want to just use as a user.

That would be also, you know very uh beneficial for us. So go ahead now the questions gets to be uh you know. Sometimes we, uh you know people ask uh you know why we want to contribute on an open source project right.

um The uh I just wanted to stress this, for especially for who are over here beginners Junior developers, who doesn't have experience with the uh contributing the open source project. There are numerous benefits um you know contributing to an open source project. uh So that's what essentially for this slide. uh This slide is and I think uh you know this uh by working to an opposite. uh You know a project.

um You can learn new technologies. First of all, and then obviously, if it is a new programming language, you can learn programming language also, you know as a software development techniques. This can help you to advance your career and become more well-rounded and skill developer right. So the opportunities you know enormous. Secondly, um you know open source project are often develop by a community of contributor and participating in this project can give you an opportunity to work with those contributors and those developers and learn from their experience and expertise. So it's an up again.

It's an opportunity to learn new things right um by contributing to an open service project. You can also help and create and improve software that are going to use the millions of people's right around the world that can be rewarding experience and give you a sense of Pride and accomplishment. That's a huge thing um also. It will give you the recognition and visibility to the water right. So if you want that, that's also easily available through contributing the open source project.

um The other uh potential thing is, you know it's it's an it's a potential open for new career opportunities. Well, things will come to you once you are skilled, with particular Technologies and and and particular if you demonstrate uh your skills so yeah, that's why you definitely want to contribute to an open source project. So if you want to do that, you are welcome.

Yeah, so I I think we have a kind of a a little bit of questions, not necessarily from the audience, but maybe you can help me um and the audience uh with um you know. What do you think are is the future of the starter project. Do you um do people who are interested in starting up with the Jakarta ee um uh would be able to start from scratch or how what the starter is giving really to um someone who wants to use it.

So yeah I can you know if I start with the technology? Particular technology right, if you want to uh you, know, try.

Maybe I'm not expert yet on that particular topic. I'm just vaguely interested in about this particular technology so where I'm gonna start with right, uh I need to have a starting point. Where I can you know, I can read a book. I can read that tons of documentation. Probably I won't do that until I'm really using that technology, particularly for a project or you know, I have a professional work other than that. If I'm an interesting and learn certain things, new things experience with new things, then I'll probably start with some place, which is easier.

This is palatable, uh you know, I can just go ahead and spend few minutes and I can see this. How it's working so in that effort, I think started project is you know, is. Is there is the place where you know people should go right and other framework has similar Concepts like I I, given an example of helidon, given an example of micropyl, they have all the starter projects. So now we have it, we have it so I mean uh there are multiple other ways, millions of other ways.

People can start, uh but you know one official starting point is definitely a great to have and that will you know I'm sure. Once it is uh it's it's available out there, a lot of people will come and try out how it's working so I'm, pretty ambitious about it. I'm super excited about it.

Right, thank you. The reason I'm asking is because we're running a poll on um uh questioning people what is preventing them for getting involved and and one of the answers that we're we're seeing, is that they don't know how to even start so I want to draw their attention to this particular project and and get them going uh that way so another level more, a conversational type of question. So what do you see happening next in the starter project?.

So we have, uh you know we have a lot of discussion going on uh and they started posting in the mailing list. If you, if you notice, we have a lot of ideas uh where many of them are super exciting and I'm in fact contributing some of those uh so I think uh now we have a a good amount of you know: involvement with the with our community members. So it's it's!

It's progressing much faster compared to earlier, so I'm really excited about that and hopefully, within a few short amount of time, we'll be able to get it. You know deep on this project and people will be able to see the benefits. So I'm super excited about that. That.

Is fantastic, and just uh for the sake of the community I think uh uh starter project was a long overdue project to be worked on, so uh we in the jakarti working group, uh whether the immediate community that is involved in the project, are super excited to see uh actually huge progress in last couple of months and we're looking into getting more people involved and particularly getting feedback on how we can improve further. So um with that buzzler I will.
