Yes, fred with the uh assistance of heather and lauren uh and uh it is taking going from an excel spreadsheet to uh mark and then uploading it into koa. And I started cataloging making a catalog of my books. And I don't.

What software it was, it was back in 1991 and then it went into paradox and then into uh good uh ellie. Ryler just said, I have the same question.

I may have an answer for you.

And then excel and then I lost excel, so I haven't updated, updated it for a while, but I still have.

Many thousands of records each hand typed into a database of some sort, and what I'm starting out with is my cartoon book collection, uh because I've been collecting those for a long time and according to my database, I have about 1200 of them. Uncattle. uh Those are the ones I've cataloged and a lot more.

They were in spreadsheet format, so I used first of all, the hard part was heather and lauren getting the right tags.

For example, I had the silly idea that I was going to use the 100 tag until uh I was re-educated.

Well, I simply was saying it's kind of an outdated concept, so it's, I think, it's, the least of your worries feel free to use 700, 710's and 7-elevens. They work in the electronic environment.

Yeah, I decided for now to forget about the difference between author and corporate author and conference.

I compared it to the time I made gumbo. It took an awful lot of time and it really wasn't worth the effort. I mean it was good, but not worth sitting over the pot stick stirring it to make the roux more jambalaya, throw everything in the pot and wait a while, so that this is jambalaya.

It's not fancy, uh but then I managed I was doing author editor, which um either suggested it was the one 700 e. I think.

Eventually I got everything figured out except for each book. I have the um almost each book that format, which is a hardcover hardcover and torrent dust jacket in dust jacket, mass market, paperback trade paperback also.

Let's see the condition and, um and what else was it? Where did you put condition uh where? Yes, ah that's what I'm getting too.

Because I really really wanted all of those in.

Our discussion correctly, uh we talked about the fact that you can do item specific notes in, for example, a 590 field or a.

Field with a subfield qualifier about the library or the copy, and that that gives you lots of display space on the screen if you're really wordy. But if it's very brief- and I think you went with something like the 952 subfield disease.

So it's an item record yeah. I really wanted it item specific, so I managed to put all those three things in in 952 z. Now what you have to do is go into coa and make 952z repeatable.

Pretty easy, and also in market, because I was using the delimited text- translator and you have to create the mrd file.

This column goes to this tag, this one to this tag, and you have to be very specific and you can, when you're mapping the say, the uh or 952 something or other um column to 1952 z. You have to say this is repeatable. You have to do that for everything that you map in the text, translator.

And you have to join everything on that. I that not that same 952 you have to join all of them together or you end up with a lot of 952s that you didn't want, and you don't know how to merge together and you don't know what you did wrong just.

We're chatting about the library of congress bibliographic, where my and is wonderful: okay,.

Let me show you a couple of that is my sort of original nice format. uh I have yeah author editor title. uh I I'm gonna have a question about the library of congress card number or control number later, um maybe not today notice, I put it in the 0.0z because I don't know what to do about the dashes.

um This is the old number from the old database. Again 3035z obsolete previous cataloging isbns. You have to make it text not number because you're going to end up a lot of the leading zeros gone.

um uh That's a note whenever you're working in excel and you do any kind of formatting you need to cop. I end up because I can never remember what I used for like. Oh, I used the formula to do this all right. I just copy all of it and then paste full text.

For all of it and then import it because mark edit does not like the formatting in excel, it has to all be text. I learned that that's another thing. I learned the hard way I'm like. Why isn't it working yes and that's why it didn't work.

Okay, oh the the other one I wanted to include in the 952z is whether I got it used or new or remainder, and I've been tracking this information for a long time. I don't want to lose it even if I never actually do anything with it. You're.

I had to add the cm, because toy doesn't do that.

Easiest way I found is just copy this entire column and do search and replace, or in word you can look for the paragraph break and.

Take paragraph break search, replace with cm paragraph break um and then paste back in you might have noticed and if you've been following what I've been saying on market and the cataloging list, I I don't care about it being elegant.

If it works, I'm gonna do it.

Let's see, I got mixed up on the current location and are these are these case sensitive the 942 to the item type? Yes,.

Learned that the hard way too, we had a library and it did not import the records like in the search results. It would show up as blank and if you went in opened the edit and then saved it, it would put the right library, so we had to manually do back edits for their entire library to assign the library, because I did it in lowercase instead of capital case. Sorry, that's another! Don't do that mistake, I learned it for you.

There may be an easier way, just global search and replace exported as mark got. The mark addict search for this, replace with that also.

When I imported the cover price and purchase price in the 952 g and v fields that didn't work, because koa decided that it was 952 dollar g dollar 4.95, I figured if the g field was blank and it was the 952 4 field.

So I ended up taking or again search and replace search for dollar g dollar replace dollar g, so these don't actually have dollar signs in the final version, uh something to worry about later.

Okay, what? What am I going to show you next? um How about.

Okay, so this is what things look like see: the dollar v doesn't have a dollar sign.

And this is where it gets really really cludgy, because I wanted a barcode and I wasn't sure how to do that. Well, actually I sort of did so I uploaded this file.

Then I used the export feature to export all of the cartoon books. You can also do it by day.

And then ran it through the mark and it.

This one yeah delimited text translator, so I got the 952 and the 999.

E

And then I put all this into a spreadsheet copied the 9 99 and turn moved over a couple of columns and turned it into a let's see. Do I have this.

Yes, uh 9.99. Here's the 952 added dollar p one zero, because I don't think I'm ever gonna get more than a hundred thousand books and then in a text file. Just look for tab dollar, p10 tab.

And replace it with just dollar p10 and that's how I got my barcodes uploaded again ignored items replace barcodes.

I had everything ready except the final screen. uh Oh let's say I'll.

And I really didn't want to paste a barcode and all my books, because.

Hardcover and torn dust jacket pipe new nice, so somehow, between the time I got it and when I cataloged it, the cover got a little tear in it.

That looks great fred, and- and do I remember correctly, that I think we're able to talk you into and possibly lauren also making this into a presentation at the conference.

Are a whole new ball of wax put them all in, and then export and clean up your author corporate author, all that and fix your subjects and all that for all of them instead of just individual. Yes,.

uh And what else oh- and I discovered recently at least um terry reece- said on the mark edit list uh library congress is not good for z 3950, because you can only do a certain number of searches at a time, which is why I get maybe 10 records and then it keeps rejecting everything at the speed of light.

Does that include like id.loc.gov, just the bibliographic records.

uh I've only tried it with uh mark edit and the z3950 yeah.

So, ideally, you can find everything the z3950 server. Nlm is great. They don't have those restrictions.

So yeah somebody not me, should add to the existing z3950 server list or ideally make it a koa us thing with types of collections you'd find there yeah. That would.

Be helpful, there's there is one list online, but it's uh it's old and then there's a lot of dead links on it.

In mind, formatting of them is interesting and yeah, and even if you were searching just in the normal library of congress catalog using that uh do check out the link I put in chat to the 0.0 field on mark 21, because formatting them.

Is creative, I think pre-pre-2000 you have to pad take out the dash and then I guess uh they're 12, digits now and then pad them with zeros.

uh I assume you just add a zero in front of that, but I don't know uh then lccc and then some with nothing.

I just put a link in the chat and I wanted to point it out to everybody. There was a discussion or there is an open bug on uh bugzilla.

The idea would be to add z3950 data to the mana database.

So if you don't know what mana is it's currently, it's a centralized database where you can upload like magazine, subscription patterns, serial subscription patterns uh or the magazine frequency. You know when they come, and you can also upload sql uh reports.

But the suggestion has been made on this bug to add z3950 data to mana, which would make it really easy to export your z3950 data to mana and really easy to import z3950 data from mana. But this bug has been open since 2021 and uh nobody has really.

Quite possibly would, and no I can't say would could this include because of course it can. I would like to put in a strong. um uh I would like to urge that it be. Can there be a field for type of collection, or you know what it's.

That that would be a like type of library would be good. Language would be good um so that you could target things like just medical collections, just law collections that sort of thing.

Much I appreciate the the crack about genealogy libraries. um I think we need to be careful because some people, while I've, got a lot of genealogical stuff and that's probably the bulk of my collection- it's not rare or unusual. What is unusual is some other categories.

It might be nice if we uh let the z3950 library uh define themselves.

Because you know what I think is important may not be what I'm best known for.

Yes and that's something that, for example, when I'm sharing a report via mana is I put in an extensive description about you know, I you know it's it's designed to do this, because this is what was important to me to get out of it and yeah.

Oh, I backtracking just a little. I wanted to mention fred, the reason you're not seeing current location. It looks like you're missing the 952 b field, which is current location.

ah Yes, yes, I didn't put that in, but it did show up. I think, on the staff end for some reason, uh things appear and disappear in this catalog and I really can't figure out why.

Look at the framework you'll find that you can change, make visibility or invisibility different on staff versus public versus opec.
