Hello: everyone welcome to the adaptive cards. Community call uh the first one for 2022. in this community call. We are joined by thomas positec, he's a microsoft mvp and we'll be going over a solution that he's implemented with adaptive cards and the power platform to solve. Captchas, then we'll briefly touch on some website updates and we'll finally end the session off with a q, a section all right. Tomas. Do you want to go ahead and just introduce yourself briefly before we get started with the demo.

Sure, okay, first, who am I uh I'm tomas poshtek. I know that the last name is quite difficult to pronounce I'm working and living in warsaw in poland, europe and I'm mainly focusing in my everyday work on processes, actually, I'm just working with our platform, but mainly with power automate recently, like recently for over a year now, with part of my desktop and adaptive cards. um I think like, since I acknowledge that that technology actually exists.

Like three years ago I think uh became some kind of of a technology of my favorite technology in uh in power outcome. I mean per platform because it's very useful across all the applications that do support adaptive cards, so teams outlook uh well flow as well and well that's what about framework and then pva, and I'm really keeping my fingers crossed that it will be even more popular and become available and more than just this mentioned already. For example, maybe it will appear in power, apps or or somewhere there.

Nevertheless, I'm working with other gift cards as well in my process, because uh this is a really uh like a easy way to create very sometimes even very complex forms, with a lot of logic behind with conditions with uh some fields which are appearing and being hidden with validation and requirements, and then send them directly, for example, to teams or to or to outlook.

And so I don't really have to take care about the ui layer. It is being done for me because of uh of well how the relative cards are working, but it really speeds up some creation of process and logic in those processes. Because this way I can very quickly grab a response from users and and so recently I was involved in rpe projects. So for those of you who haven't ever had about rpa, this is robotic press automation. So that's a technology that actually simulates user behavior uh on the machine.

So uh it helps us to like fill in those gaps between some legacy systems, legacy old systems and modern solutions like uh cloudflows, so where cloudflow is unable to reach out to a desktop application or old database or well anything that doesn't have a digital api, then we can use rpa, which is configured to like click, those ui elements, those fields, those text, boxes, buttons, menu items as if there was a regular user. Who is clicking all those ui elements and then populate those fields.

Those transactions I mean just, do what would the regular user do and then grab the outcome? Send them back to cloudflow, and this way to be like this integration layer between what we have in a cloud and what we have elsewhere like in on-premises uh servers and the solution was about.

I mean ultimate automatical acceptance of invoices, and in that case the invoices were actually in uh in a website application still, even though, that uh the whole system where those invoices were present and were meant to be accepted was online was uh as a built as a website.

It didn't have any kind of rest api or any other api that could be queried so that this acceptance could be done automatically or faster and customer wanted to have that process automated, because uh it was simply taking too much time for employees to go through every invoice and they are having like hundreds of the invoices per month and uh do all those comparisons and acceptance manually.

So the goal was just to take a list of invoices to be accepted from sap and then navigate to that website. Compare data from one list with another and accept these invoices that were able to be, or that meant to be accepted, and everything was fine until the day before the solution was meant to be launched productively.

The operator of the website introduced recaptcha because they wanted to be more secure and simply secure the logging procedure with recaptcha. So, to avoid uh bots from signing in so recaptcha is that technology. That appears mostly at uh I mean that that appears and in all those scenarios on websites where we as users are meant to provide something to like post a comment sign in um go through some checkout process in in a basket like anywhere. We usually are providing some data and sending this data to the web server.

There is captcha to uh like avoid all these bots that could be doing some things manually or sorry automatically and as well to limit the load that can be then transferred to the web server uh so that only those transactions are really coming from the real users are allowed. So recaptcha is looking like that.

uh There are like three types of recaps already uh the most commonly used now is the recaptcha v point two, although there is a swell recaptcha 3.3, uh which is less visible and doing is doing this kind of validation, whether the agent is a user or or, and a bot based on some kind of automatic discovery. I don't know how this score is calculated, but this recapture v3 simply trying to discover whether the person, the the agent that is uh operating on the website is about or not, um but basically uh for a regular user.

Captcha is not an issue, so you're simply asked to. I mean before this challenge that you saw appears you need to like access the same website or recaptcha couple of times per day, so that, after I know like a 10th uh 10th approach, 10th selection, that you're not about this challenge, is going to be displayed before it is only. You only need to simply select the checkbox and that's it, but then selecting the checkbox for the bot is nothing nothing challenge, although figuring out which tiles it should select.

When asked to hey select, all images with stairs is a challenge already, and so I was thinking about maybe doing some kind of image recognition and uh trying to do that with uh some ai builder. But then I didn't know how to actually split this whole image into those small tiles and then analyze one by one.

So what I decided to do is to simply make the bot to ask a user, the business user for an input and when speaking about attended- but I mean one additional thing uh in in rpa- is that this technology can be running in like two modes.

B

It can be running in attendance mode, so the one that you're actually in front of a computer and you're, seeing what the body is doing so in that case, uh recaptcha is not going to be an issue, because if it appears, then the bot would simply display like a message to the user. Hey help me user resolves recaptcha, clicks, ok and then what continues.

B

But the case, I'm talking about was happening in unattended mode, so some were on the remote server on virtual machine in azure, and so business users were not meant even to access that virtual machine. So I was thinking about a solution that would actually help the bot to resolve recaptcha, but without an actual need for the user to log into the virtual machine, and the solution I created is doing that very well, quite an easy step.

So first is taking a screenshot with that recaptcha displayed then, is sending an actionable message to user inbox with a question help me resolve that recapture, like select, which titles should be selected by me and then once the user responds bot, simply selects these images, which are indicated by the user, and this way it can resolve dv capture. So having that said, let me show you how this solution works. So um first I would run this recaptcha demo.

So close that window, and so what you'll see in just a moment is that the body is going to actually trigger the website that you've seen just a moment ago with a fresh start with a with a forum displayed and uh well, it will possibly be again facing that recaptcha challenge, so I will not be going into the details about how the whole bot solution is built. If you are interested around that, you can simply navigate to my latest youtube video and there.

This solution is described in details like what actual steps the bodies is taking. I will now focus really only this that part around actionable message.

Okay, let's see if it is able to now click.

B

Oh so uh it clicked that checkbox, so the challenge is displayed and now in just a few moments, I should be sent an email with that actionable message, so stay tuned. The another challenge that is uh well happening here is that this. This challenge that you see now is being displayed is only active for like two minutes, so I was trying to do my best to have this solution working as fast as possible, although there are obviously some delays- and I will tell you where so that's the email with an actual message.

uh So here is a screenshot for the user, so they can actually see what is in there and then they ask us how to suck the layout so that it's like three on three or four on four. So there are different check boxes present here and in the end, user has to select those which are with motorcycles, which is uh these that and and this one so once it's resolved, there is a confirmation message and then the bodies should now select these styles that I have marked as those containing yeah motorcycles.

So this way, but was able to resolve recaptcha, uh supplement the form and actually go through that challenge, which is just impossible to solve by a regular bots, and I said uh this solution is actually working on virtual machines somewhere in the cloud, so users are not accessing it and the only way of interacting is this kind of adaptive card um all right. So that was the demo. I hope.

Let me go simply just to the solution like how it was built, because that might be more interesting in in terms of uh our call today.

So um we have as well as I saw david with us uh david sorry, I'm just using these old actionable messages. I know that one day it should be replaced with something more modern, with universal actions and so on, but until I am able to use it, I am still relying on on this old approach.

B

So first and the most important thing around actionable messages is that if you want to let power automate to send those kind of dynamic mails to your inbox or to other inboxes in your organization, you need to pro you need to register this actionable email provider.

B

So you need to go to outlook.office.com, connectors, oam and publish, and there you can register any provider, and you have three options on how this provider on the scope of the provider. So the first is just your mailbox and that one is like approved automatically, because this will only allow you to send that email to yourself.

B

Others, even if you will send that mail to others, they won't see the card displayed, so they will suggest a blank mail or only the html contents. Then the second scope is organization, so that you will be able to send this to any person within your tenant. But then you will need an approval from exchange admin and there is a small global which allows you or will allow you to send that email to anyone within office 365, and that requires approval for microsoft.

So I created this organizational use, this organization scope and the next thing that you have to create as well are those target urls. So where data from those actionable messages is going to be sent what I've done.

I just used this kind of uh regex mask so that I simply created um the provider that will allow me to send data from actionable message to any cloud flow or any logic flow. Actually, because uh I'm not a developer and data from my cards is simply being sent to other cloud flows and then it is being handled there. And, lastly, you can define as well. It is not visible here, but you can define from which addresses those actionable messages will be sent.

So again you should define the providers or the emails, the mailboxes that will be sending those messages, and so once you have it, you need to get this provider id and that's the most important thing around sectional messages when you want to send them uh um to your during boxes. So then the second thing I built is actually the flow that is being called from the rpa. So rpa is triggering this cloud flow.

It is passing to this cloud flow.

B

Some basic information uh like the instance id uh so that I am able to like bind specific information, specific requests with specific instance specific rpa instance and the screenshot you saw is being uploaded to onedrive. So first flow is like checking if that uh file has been uploaded and is available. If not, it is waiting until that screenshot is uploaded. So this is the first place where the the whole solution is actually wasting or losing some time, because uh this sync between the server and one drive can take a couple of seconds.

I mean second two seconds: uh it's quite fast, usually, but that's the first place um where the bot is waiting, then, is creating a record in dataverse, where it's storing information about this particular recaptcha challenge, request and then based on. If the bullet was able to find out. If the layout of captcha is three on three or four on four or wasn't able to find out is sending a different adaptive card, so the one you saw is actually containing this option to select.

uh The layout, so first user is requested to select layout because bot wasn't able to discover it and because, based on the layout, the image tiles are different. Therefore, what is asking user to first select this layout right, so first, the layout then, depending on what the layout is set, there are different check boxes to be selected and and and what then.

So the next important thing around the design of adaptive card is that is the fact that you need to add this originator parameter, which is just the provider id from that actual messages dashboard. So this is that value without it, uh you won't be able to actually pass through the actionable message and there are as well some other minor differences between the regular adaptive card and actionable message. So, for example, the fact that buttons here were cut off is because I didn't choose that option here, so I just pass it again and okay.

There are the buttons, uh for example, the fact that in actionable messages, we are able to create a button that is a type of action http uh that is not present in regular adaptive cards and so in that action so depending on which button is visible and which button user clicks.

Those those buttons are sending posts to that. Other action that other cloudflow that I have built as well- and I will show you in a moment and as well, they are sending a body and then in body they are sending just a table of all the statuses for all checkboxes which are present. So then, if any checkbox is marked as true, then bot knows that it has to select this particular checkbox.

Also, there is information about what is the layout of that of that recaptcha or the instance id of the flow to to have this record in place and as for record id. So the information about the data verse record that was created by the flow in the first place, so that the second flow I will show in a moment knows what information or what, where to update the information database, which record in dataverse it has to update. Maybe this way right um right.

So once this whole adaptive card is uh is created, it is then the second thing that is different between adaptive cards, like in teams and those sent in uh in outlook.

B

You need to wrap that content, that adaptive card json in script, type application adaptive card plus json so like you need to surround this in the script tags and only then you are able to simply put this script into the body of an email, and, apart from that script, that I mean that that's actually a message: script code you're as well able to put other html.

B

So you can really write a regular html email. uh Another. The thing that, in my case uh is used to, like hide the whole body, is this parameter uh in the beginning, which is telling again the actionable message whether to hide everything else apart from actionable message or maybe to show as well. Whatever else is in that email written, but in my case, even if there was anything written, then it is being hidden and so mainly sent. And what else then, the flow is waiting 90 seconds for for the response from the user.

So it's like checking every two seconds whether that row it was created um in the beginning is already updated and if it is updated, it means that user click resolve which triggered this second flow. To handle the user input for the recaptcha, and this flow is much much more simple because it only first it checks. If this whole operation is not timed out.

So if user actually resolved that recaptcha after a minute and a half, it means it was too late and then simply bot is sending uh a response telling the user that uh this recapture challenge has expired, and so bot is trying to at five times up to five five times to send again that that email with a fresh new captcha. So if, after five times user is still unable to resolve that, then the bot will simply stop and and wait until someone actually signs into that virtual machine and resolves the captcha manually.

But if user is lucky enough to to fit in with those within those minute and a half, then what updates around so that record with information which images were selected and is sending uh response back to the user that you saw once I hit resolve with information. Thank you for helping the bot to resolve recapture challenge, and so, if the record is resolved, then flow is simply continuing and is sending back. The response to the rpa with information which images were selected and what is the type of the captcha if anything, went wrong.

If user wasn't able to make it within the time or if there were any errors or whatever happened else, then it is uh sending back this code 400, which is again telling the bot that it has to retry the whole process so to refresh the website and get the new captcha and again request user to resolve it from their inbox and also the cool thing about actionable messages is the fact that you don't necessarily need to do that straight from your inbox. You can as well do it on your mainboard on your mobile phone. Sorry.

So if your outlook on on on the phone on your mobile is following the requirements for actionable messages, you are as well able to simply resolve this challenge straight from your phone. So you don't have to even go to your laptop and check what is what is displayed there. So that's another cool thing about this whole solution and well. This is how it's built.

As you already see, there are like several situational places that are actually uh making delays the whole process, so that can impact how fast this is being resolved, but so far it is like running uh since a week. Sorry- and it's quite successful so every day in the morning there is this recaptcha challenge: mail sent sometimes twice sometimes three times, but in the end users are like waiting. uh If there is anything popping up to your mailboxes and are ready to resolve so so far so good, the bot is working without any issues and yeah.

I know many users in here are probably very familiar with adaptive cards, but there's always something to learn, and this article really helped me when I was ramping up on the team since I haven't joined um the team for a super long time. His youtube, which is also linked in the chat, also has really good content. I specifically remember watching his video on outlook actionable messages and that also helped with the the ramp up when I joined the adaptive cards team. So thank you. Tomas for for joining us in this community call as well.

um Next, we'll briefly go over some website updates, so I'll go ahead and share my screen.

So as soon as we have this blog post edited and posted on youtube, we'll have it in our blog section and we'll go ahead and publish a release of the website. But as far as to what you can expect on this uh new release of the website, um we've gone ahead and added some new samples for all the 1.5 features that we released earlier on.

um Well, it was actually last year, but only a couple months ago we had input.text mapping, so this sample will show you how you can take advantage of these newly added features. Like input.text mapping, we have a newly created flight update card. This one is actually using our table element, which was also added on 1.5 instead of column sets, which is the old one that we had.

We have an input form which shows you how you can take advantage of rtl for different users that might need a different form layout, an order confirmation which this one, I believe, uses.

A

The input flyout menu for an overflow menu when you might have limited space, we have order delivery, which will show this one shows the right there. The schedule order for pick up the tooltip that comes for options and also the disabled input right here for delivery, and this one shows, for example, depending on the radius. You might have a use case where, if the restaurant is too far away from your user, you might not be able to have a delivery from there.

And finally, we have this input order, form which shows up all the filtering and autocomplete that we added with input choices.

If that was everything, so we can go ahead and move on to to our q a section I know someone asked in the chat. Any update on when outlook desktop will support greater versions than 1.0 greg asked that question. So when I reached out to the outlook team, they mentioned that there are actually some outlook, clients that already support version 1.4 of adaptive cards, but the reason why we see version 1.0 in our partners, page for supported adaptive cards is because every client every outlet client supports 1.0.

So as soon as they're able to get all the clients updated to a more recent version of adaptive cards, they'll be able to reflect that on on our website as well. How long did it take you to fully make it and figure out everything? I think. That's a question for tomas.

Yeah, I just replied: it took me around two days and the most difficult part was actually to figure out how to get x and y's of the tiles displayed on the screen, because uh that that wasn't that very straightforward, so that the bot is not reading the coordinates from the css. So like 100 pixels, it's not 100 pixels for the bot, because this is multiplied by the screen scale or sound like in my case, uh this. The scaling of screen was 125, so it has to be multiplied by 1.25 and anyways.

uh That was the the most challenging part to find out how to actually make the bot after it receives uh the information which chance to to click to click. These tiles, actually not just elsewhere.

Or somewhere around that's awesome. I was actually wondering that as well, is the capture window always the same size like even if your screen is magnified or something? Is it always the same dimensions to where your bot can detect the tiles that it has to be clicked on right? So.

B

That's a good question. I I wasn't trying to magnify the screen, although I I'm sure, and that what I checked is that even in I mean between full hd, qhd and um and what I have on the surface book is uh what is it it's ultra hd.

uh So in all those you know screen resolutions, the capture size was actually the same, the same dimensions in css, but I said it had to be multiplied by this um scale, parameter and depending on the screen where it was displayed, because uh actually what what rpa is reading as pixels are the screen pixels, not the css pixels. So it's not like one one. uh I mean one pixel one screen pixel equals one css pixel, so that was that was this challenge.

But then always the width and height of those styles and the whole capture is the same awesome. Not. I think you had a question. It's not a d.

Morning I have a question about adaptive cards, 1.4 and later being supported in teams, specifically with using power automate. I saw that recently cards now render in teams which is fantastic before it used to give some kind of generic error.

However, one of the big things with 1.4 that seemed really exciting was the concept of the universal action model, where your back end can send a new card or refresh a card, and that kind of a thing it seems to me that that's not supported in power automate, and I just I guess my first question is make sure that that's the case that you cannot do any of the universal action model stuff when using power automate, and secondly, I'm curious. If there's a way to do that with another tool other than using.

uh I guess a bot to do it.

Take on this one so in our last community call, which we actually skipped december um due to the holidays, but in november we had harish menon he's um one of the pms on the power automate team. He mentioned that the targeted date for support for adaptive cards, 1.4 and possibly even 1.5, was in their schedule for the first half of 2022.. I think they had previously given out the date of cuyu4 of 2021, but as of the last community call, he mentioned that they were targeting the first half of 2022 to consume our latest sdk.

As far as the universal action models, I'm not too certain if there are any other ways that you could achieve this or work around for this. That might be something that the power automate team and one of their community calls might have a better answer to to that question.

Got it, and can you point me to any resources like any details about when the community call for power.

Automate is absolutely so right after this slide that we have for the q a section we have a resources slide and also all the m365 developer community calls. I can actually advance to that slide, just in case you're running low on time. We have it right here.

The powerapps is a monthly community call, and it seems that they have their link right here for for their community called. This slide was also updated from last call where it seemed that the one we had was a little outdated. So all these links right here should be updated to to the latest community calls.

Thank you awesome, um so my question probably was something I missed so tamash. What's the glue between power automate desktop the rpa function and, like the flow that's running on the cloud, how did it? How did the cloud-based flow activate something on your local machine? Was that a action like what did I miss that.

B

So I triggered that desktop flow manually and then destaflow actually called web service, which uh simply sent a post request to the cloud flow that that was configured to be triggered by http request and desktop flow was waiting for the response. So it's configured to wait on up to like a minute and 45 seconds and for the response. After that, the call is timing out and bot is trying to make the call again.

uh But it's all, based on the http request between the desktop flow and cloud flows.

So is the desktop flow, is it like polling or does it get like a push response from like? Is it checking the server to see if there's a response, or it like in a loop of some kind, or is it actually.

Getting a push.

Response, it's.

Just the web service call: that is simply, I actually don't know if this is pulling or pushing. I think it's just. I think it's just waiting for the for the response, so it's kind of a push um okay uh check, but maybe it's it's testing itself. If there is no, I mean no, it's definitely a push. So um it's sending the request to the the cloudflow and then is waiting for the response from the cloud flow.

I'm gonna have to play more with power. On my desktop, I uh I didn't know the the glue was was quite there. That's that's interesting.

B

I mean you know there is like different options, because uh you have even an action in cloud flows to trigger power to my desktop so um in in some cases you might simply call power to my desktop and complete the operation return some data back to the cloud flow and then maybe trigger it again to do some other things, but in my case, because uh it's a pipe, it's just a small piece of a really larger logic.

B

Then I simply embed this kind of communications directly within the desktop flow, so that desoflow is calling calling a different cloud flow. Then there is some things: some things are happening on the cloud side and the response is then sent back to the desktop flow, which can then proceed uh other other actions and rest of the logic. So this is this is kind of this idea.

Yeah cool, we have a question from andy: asking: will adaptive card support, people, picker and or a drop down where we can bind to a data source andy? Would you be able to elaborate a little more on that question looks like we might not have andy on the call just yet or um as far as binding to a data source?

A

Would that be related to something like a choice set map like relating adding data to a choice set.

Yeah, so we were really close to getting that in 1.5, both people picker and like a dynamic, auto complete. I see that that's the feature really it's referring to like with choice that right now the the choices are are statically in there um I yeah we're it's it's top, it's very top of mind for us, adding people picker and a dynamically populated choice set. I don't think we have an eta at this point, but it's it's. Like top of the stack of the next thing, we'll get.

To absolutely the dynamic input that choice said was a it's actually a feature, that's already specced out in our repository. It was one that our team was looking at. Unfortunately, we we didn't have enough time and resources to to get to it in our 1.5 release, but, as matt mentioned, it's very high up in our priority stack because there's a lot of even internal microsoft customers. That would like to see this feature. um You have another question: can someone tell me when the powerapps monthly call is.

So it's every third wednesday, so the next one will be the 19th and it's 8 a.m. Pacific standard time.

Jp, do you have any update on uh the adaptive components uh either when it's going to be implemented or how the design of that's going? Yes, I think matt would be able to answer that question.

Yeah I wish I had more. It's it's on pause right now. um We've hit some other priorities, still very top of mind, but not under active active work. Okay, that's helpful, be curious if you ever want to like.

If you have like a strong use case for it I mean we've got a fair bit of customer evidence that it makes sense um we're just you know, and we've got it's not exactly low on the priority list. But it's you know it's a somewhat complicated evolution, and so we've been tackling some other stuff at this point, but if you want to chat any more specific or if you even want to it's, definitely one of those things that can be built out outside of the adaptive card world.

Like you know, you could take the code and sort of build some some parts of it on your own. If you had a pressing need but feel free to email me if you, if you want to chat about that.

Yeah matt we've done, we've done something like that already. So we we use like a concept for adaptive like an external component type model and we'd love to you know not continue to build it ourselves and for it to yeah the standard guys here. It makes sense awesome I'll I'll reach out, and I can okay.

Thank you guys for that question. um We have a question from jose in the chat hi have any of you guys used adaptive cards to create viva connection, dashboard cards so jose. If you were not present for the last minute we had in november, it was actually a great community call as well. We had folks from the viva connections, team and designers as well, who got on the call and showed how to create really beautiful adaptive cards.

They. I know that they have it uploaded on on their side, and we are right now actually working with them to get them uploaded on our sample site as well on adaptive cards. So hopefully we can have those all those samples for the viva connections dashboard on our site soon in our designer we actually have the host app um on it as well. So, if you're trying to see how get a preview of how your card would look in the viva connections, dashboard you, you will be able to see it in our designer today.

Amazing thanks so much um yeah, I think tammy. My colleague is on this call as well, and I think we got the invite internally um before that call in november annoyingly enough come what we're trying to do, and apologies that this is mentioned earlier is is, I know, microsoft have pimped out horizontal scrolling on viva connection dashboard cards, but no one in microsoft seems to know how to accomplish that. I wondered if these adaptive cards could could um accomplish that. If that makes sense.

I'm not familiar with that and it wouldn't be possible using just what adaptive cards offers, so it was either something they added in their like. They have like the l1 templates, which are a little more structured, so perhaps they added it in that outer layer. um I can't think of any standard way, you'd be able to achieve that. Although people have done some really creative things with cards, I don't think you could achieve horizontal scrolling.

I'm thinking of the buttons and the preview but yeah we're trying to get because you can appreciate the very limited real estate you have on mobile apps right, which is pretty much what these um dashboard cards look like on the team's mobile app um yeah, okay, cool thanks, we'll we'll we'll um we'll look at the the stuff you shared and and um is the recording of that session.

Yes, absolutely we're looking to to get it updated, as I mentioned when I shared the website updates. As soon as we have this december or january, community call uploaded to youtube and the blog post written for it. We're gonna have all the the previous community calls updated on our blog with the added samples that you saw for for 1.5, um hopefully, by that time, we'll be able to work with the viva connections, folks to get their samples up on the site as well.
