Description
This Town Hall provides an overview of where NEAR is coming from, where NEAR is now and where NEAR is going.
NEAR has gone through a lot of changes, the original idea for NEAR was to be an AI project slated to launch on Ethereum. When NEAR Co-Founders Illia Polosukhin and Alex Skidanov realized that Ethereum wouldn’t be able to scale to sustain their project, they decided to shift focus to developing their own sharded blockchain. From there, the story evolved into what NEAR is now.
NEAR Foundation CEO Erik Trautman explains what exactly NEAR is, what the current state of the ecosystem is and where it will go from here.
The Town Hall continues with showcases of what is currently being built on NEAR, with examples from 1Inch Co-Founder Anton Bukov and Aliaksandr “Sasha” Hudzilin providing an update on the NEAR ecosystem at large. Mildred Idada presents the Open Web Collective and all the projects that they’re helping incubate on NEAR. Hear from Chase Freo from OP Games, Tori Samples from Leaf Global Fintech, Jose Carlos Tolosa from Boxscore, Bridge Craven from ARterra and Misha Libman from Snark.art.

needs
were

solve

launching

in

proof

version
right,
the
restricted
version,
and

was
really
because
we
wanted

deliver

developers
and

getting
feedback

developers

had

had

of
a

open,
sale
happened
in
summer.

was

of

sort
of
heard
what
got
us
to
where
we
are
today.
The
question
that
I'm
here
to
answer
is
basically:
where
is
where
is
here
what
what
actually
is
near,
and
so
I
think
I
think
the
first
place
to
start
is
actually
what
unites
everybody.
So
you
know
near
is
a
blockchain
there's
a
platform
and
there's
an
ecosystem,
but
what
actually
ties?

All
of
that
together,
I
think,
is
the
important
part
and
that's
where
the
purpose
comes
in
so
so.
Our
purpose
overall
is
to
enable
community
driven
innovation
to
benefit
people
around
the
world,
which
is
which
is
kind
of
a
long
way
of
saying
we
help
builders
make
stuff
and
we
help
to
distribute
or
we
try
to
help
them,
distribute
that
stuff.
That's
that's
fundamentally,
our
job
and
and
the
tool
that
we
have
at
our
disposal
is
near
specifically
linear
platform.

if
you
look
here,
you
can
see
so
basically
near
I
mean
you
could
describe
it
as
a
blockchain,
but
it's
more
than
a
blockchain.
You
could
describe
it
as
a
platform.
It's
actually
more
than
a
platform,
it's
actually

entire
ecosystem,

let's
start
with
actually
the
blockchain
part,
because
I
think
maybe
not
everybody's
quite
on
exactly
the
same
page
about
what
exactly
that
is,
and
so
specifically
near
is
a
fundamentally
reimagined
layer,

blockchain.

is
not
a
side
chain,
it
is
not
a
dap.

the
only
place
that
you
can
implement
sharding
and
sharding
really
is
the
only
way
to
to
properly
scale
linearly,
and
you
know,
sort
of
theoretically
infinitely,
although
obviously
there
are
some
practical
considerations
along
the
way
to

achieve
the
kind
of
load
that
we
need
to
achieve.

going
to

One
of
these
platforms
together
is
is
how
the
usability
that's
experienced
by
the
developers
at
the
top
of
the
stack,
is
driven
by
some
of
the
decisions
that
are
made
at
the
bottom
of
the
stack
on
the
blockchain
level,

us
specifically
for
near
that.
That
actually
comes
from
the
account
model.

there's
a
lot
of
flexibility
built
in
where
basically
pretty
much
everything
is
treated
as
a
contract,
so
if
you're
a
developer,
that
means
you
can
do
all
sorts
of
really
interesting
stuff,
as
opposed
to
kind

the
very
rigid
account
model
that
you
get
in
ethereum
with
this
one,
because
accounts
are
contracts,
you
can
do
things
like
you
can
hide
the
blockchain
from
end
users.
You
can
you
basically
one
one
of
the
one
of
the
key
aspects
of
that
is
well.

Actually
one
of
the
key
features
is
we've
actually
baked
in,
so
that
developers
can
actually
earn
back
some
of
the
fees
that
are
created
through
the
gas
that's
burned
by
their
their
contracts,
and
so
you
know,
obviously
gas
is
one
of
the
major
problems
on
ethereum.
So
we
wanted
to
make
sure
that
if,
if
we
are
going
to
be
a
developer
first
platform,
a
builder
first
platform-
really
that's
that's
where
that
comes
from
so
yeah.
So
so
we
start
with
the
blockchain.

kind

bubble
up
the
middle
layer
here
is
really
all
the
financial
infrastructure.

lot
of
everybody's
heard
of
defy
at
this
point,
they're
they're
sort
of
you

let's

a
half
a
dozen
components
in

are

are
particularly
important
and

that
need
to
kind
of
get
packaged
together
to
form
the
substrate
on
which
you
can
build
all
the
rest
of
the
developer.

ecosystem,
different
protocols

launched

very
different
ways

with

voted

transfers

staking
rewards

been
enabled.
What
that
means,

the

mainnet

full
featured
and
production
ready.

is

smart
contract
platform

live.

running,
builders
can
build
apps
on
top
of
it,
they
can
transfer
tokens

other

they
have
the
tooling

to
make
this
happen.

been

from

contract
model,
pretty
much
everything's

contract
on
your

accounts
and
things
like
that
lock
ups.

that's
obviously
why
you

contracts
are
so
high,

that's
one

things

makes
this
great,
and
so
it's
really
cool
to
see
that
to
see
that
trend
of
people
really
starting
to
get
engaged
and
starting
to
build
cool
stuff.

one
of

cool
parts
about
being
live
is,
of
course
you
can
participate
in
the
network.

this

This

a
network,
it's
a
proof-of-stake
network.
So
that
means,
if
you
hold
tokens,
you

just
hold
the
tokens.

could
use
the
tokens
in
an
app
or
you
could
stake
the
tokens
and,

so
basically,
validators
are
paid
through
the
inflation
from
the
network.

very
healthy
time

go
out
there
and
stake

tokens

part
of
this
whole
ecosystem,
we
have
had
a
lot

people
come
in
and
build
really
helpful
tools
for
this.

have.
We
have
a
bunch
of
different
wallets
who
have
integrated
with
us
and
are
supporting
the
staking
infrastructure,
which
has
been
a
really
cool
thing
to
see

again
on
the
wallet

a

be

it

team
effort

always
healthy

a
swiss-based
non-profit.

job

support

coordination

gathering
things

the

older
ecosystem

builder
ecosystem,

validator

them

experimented
with

community
form
around
this

the
road
map
we
started
near
in
august.
2018
today
is
october
2020.
It
took
us
26
months,
all
in
all,
from
inception
and
killed
launch
and
for
the
system
of
this
complexity.
This
is
very
fast,
so,
as
we
were
launching
we
were
not
comfortable
to
ship
sharding
right
away,
so
mainnet
today
does
not
operate
with
multiple
shots.
It
operates
with
one,
however
sharding
is
built
in
there
has
been
a
community
operated
network
called
guildnet
that
has
been
running
since
summer
with
a
good
success.

We
are
presently
making
sure
that
sharding
is
production,
ready
the
plan.
The
roadmap
for
sharding
is
to
enable
it
on
betanet,
which
is
our
network
for
operated
in
decentralized
fashion,
where
we
test
the
features
in
january
2021,
once
it
is
on
beta
net
from
beta
to
mainnet.
We
have
no
control,
it's
going
to
be
happening
through
the
governance,
where
the
community
decides
that
it
is
time
to
enable
sharding
charging
allows
us
to
scale
linearly.

Today,
on
a
single
chart,
we
can
execute
around
1000
transactions
per
second
give
or
take
a
little
less
if
it's
smart
contract
calls
between
500
to
slightly
higher
numbers.
So
sharding
will
allow
us
to
scale
that
multiplied
by
number
of
shards.
We
will
initially
launch
with
eight
then
through
community
governance
we
will
be
able
to
go
to
16
to
32
and
beyond.

if
we
switch
next

kind

one
of
the
crit
as
a
critical
piece
for
any
blockchain
is
really
having
assets
and
being
able
to
operate
inside
the
economy.

targeting,

general
use

creators

developers

everyone

all
of
them
at
the

need
the
financial
system
underneath

ethereum.

novel

blockchain
protocol,

idea

to
connect
those
two
blockchains

governed

by
the
same
way
that
these
protocols
are
governed.

the
development

original
testnet
launch
happened
in

us

actually

interesting
problem

we

came

skills
could
be
different

There
are
groups
of
people
that
come

and

awesome

related

directly,
sometimes
indirectly.

over
20
judges
that
looked
at
these
submissions

out
of
those
we
picked
26
winners.

what's
really
interesting

that
five
out
of
the
top
seven
projects

the
hackathon,

didn't
break

judges
gave
them

out
of
seven
used,
the
rainbow
bridge
in
total
it

25

one-fourths

the
projects
and
then
the
most
interesting

One-Third
of
the
winners

were
from
