From YouTube: Governor, City Officials Celebrate Completion of Solar Project To Power Yards Brewery, City Archives
Description
Governor Tom Wolf, Mayor Jim Kenney, and Councilmember Derek Green announced today the completion of a solar installation on the roof of the “SoNo” development at 5th and Spring Garden. The SoNo solar project is the first multi-tenant commercial solar project in the Commonwealth. The project enabled local solar company Solar States to retain workers during the economic downturn that resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic.

A
Hi
welcome.
My
name
is
emily
shapiro,
I'm
the
executive
director
of
the
philadelphia
energy
authority,
we're
a
municipal
government
entity
focused
on
building
a
robust,
equitable,
clean
energy
economy
in
philadelphia.
I
am
so
thrilled
to
be
here
today
as
part
of
philadelphia's
second
annual
solar
week
to
celebrate
a
new
groundbreaking
commercial,
solar
installation
in
our
city.
A
This
project,
dubbed
sono
solar,
is
owned
by
alliance
hsp,
the
developer
of
the
mixed
use,
sono
project
at
fifth
and
spring
garden
streets.
It
provides
740
kilowatts
of
power
through
over
2
000
solar
panels
to
two
of
the
commercial
tenants
at
the
property
yards
brewery
and
the
city
of
philadelphia's
archives.
A
A
We
know
there's
tremendous
demand
for
clean
energy
here
due
to
the
climate
commitments
of
so
many
of
our
cities,
companies
and
institutions,
and
this
project
paves
the
way
for
real
growth
in
philadelphia.
Solar
alliance
hsp
had
been
interested
in
solar
in
this
building
for
a
number
of
years
and
partnered,
with
pea
to
figure
out
the
details
when
the
state
opened
up
the
solar
energy
program
in
2018.
A
A
You'll,
also
hear
from
trevor
pritchett,
ceo
of
yards
brewery,
matt
handel,
director
of
acquisitions
and
leasing
for
alliance,
hsp
and
micah
gold,
markell
of
solar
states,
the
local
solar
installation
partner
for
this
project.
So
before
I
hand
it
off,
a
few
thanks
are
in
order
of
all
the
types
of
projects
that
advance
climate
goals.
Rooftop
solar
creates
the
most
local
jobs
per
dollar
invested.
A
A
A
Thank
you
to
adam
mcgallico,
the
city's
former
energy
manager,
who
helped
shepherd
this
process
through
the
city
and
to
all
the
members
of
the
law,
department
and
department
of
records
who
participated
in
this
process
with
an
open
mind
and
a
commitment
to
local
jobs
and
the
environment
to
governor
wolf.
Thank
you
for
your
leadership
on
clean
energy.
The
solar
energy
program
is
critical
for
moving
complex
solar
projects
forward.
Just
like
this
one,
and
we
look
forward
to
continuing
to
advance
solar
in
the
commonwealth.
A
Together,
solar
can
power
us
into
a
new
normal,
with
lower
electric
bills,
more
local
jobs
and
reduced
climate
impact.
That's
why
through
solarize
philly
we're
providing
all
interested
philadelphia
property
owners
with
a
free
solar
assessment
of
their
building
if
they
sign
up
by
september
30th
at
solarizephilly.org,
thanks
for
joining
us
today
to
celebrate
this
exciting
new
project
and
now
I'll
pass
it
off
to
governor
wolf.
B
Hi,
I'm
governor
tom
wolf
here
in
pennsylvania.
We
know
that
clean
energy
creates
jobs
as
of
2019.
Our
commonwealth's
clean
energy
sector
was
adding
jobs
at
a
rate
five
times
faster
than
the
overall
state
employment
growth
rate
and
in
the
pennsylvania
solar
future
plan.
We
found
that
by
increasing
the
portion
of
solar
energy
on
our
grid
to
10
percent,
we
could
create
more
than
100
000
jobs.
B
B
The
commonwealth
supported
the
sono
project.
With
one
of
the
grants
we
issued
through
the
most
recent
round
of
solar
energy
program
funding,
we
reopened
the
solar
energy
program
for
grants
in
2018
to
advance
our
goal
of
making
pennsylvania
a
leader
in
clean
energy
as
the
first
multi-tenant
commercial
solar
project
in
the
commonwealth.
B
C
Hey
it's
solar
week
here
in
philadelphia,
and
we
have
some
good
news.
The
newly
completed,
so
no
solar
project
will
power
the
city
archives
with
cost
competitive,
clean
energy
and
is
supporting
local
jobs.
As
we
rebuild
our
economy,
we
signed
on
to
participate
in
the
sono
solar
project
to
advance
our
commitment
to
powering
city
buildings
with
100
renewable
energy
by
the
year
20.
C
The
cost
of
solar
has
dropped
significantly
over
recent
years
and
is
now
cost
competitive,
with
the
rate
that
the
city
pays
for
conventional
electricity.
Solar
projects
have
been
driving
economic
development
for
years.
In
fact,
solar
and
smaller
jobs
were
listed
as
2019
as
the
nation's
fastest
growing
occupation.
C
Solar's
job
creation
potential
has
a
new
level
of
importance
during
the
pandemic
and
economic
downturn.
It
has
created
the
fact
that
solar
states
was
able
to
retain
workers
to
complete
the
sono
project
and
is
continuing
to
hire
even
in
the
wake
of
covid
is
a
testament
to
the
fact
that
the
solar
industry
is
here
to
stay
and
will
continue
to
take
on
a
larger
role
as
we
transition
our
electricity
system.
That
is
the
support
of
our
health
sustainability
and
resilience
goals.
C
I
want
to
close
by
thanking
the
office
of
sustainability,
commonwealth
finance
agency,
philadelphia
city
council,
solar
states
and
the
philadelphia
energy
authority
for
supporting
the
project
to
move
forward.
The
sono
solar
project
saves
money,
creates
jobs
and
advances
our
climate
goals.
I
applaud
the
leadership
of
the
alliance
hsp
and
yards
brewery
for
partnering
with
us
to
get
this
win-win-win
installation
across
the
finish
line.
Great
job.
D
I'm
councilmember
at
large,
derrick
green.
I'm
really
excited
to
be
part
of
this
virtual
press
conference.
It
really
demonstrates
that
philadelphia
is
leading
the
way
in
solar
from
the
first
c-paced
finance
project
for
a
day
care
in
germantown
to
the
sono
installation,
which
is
the
first
multi-tenant
commercial
solar
project
in
pennsylvania.
D
This
demonstrates
that
we
are
using
solar
as
a
way
of
getting
people
back
to
work.
As
a
member
of
city
council,
I
was
really
honored
to
introduce
to
see
pace,
legislation
in
council
and
get
it
passed
by
us
taking
the
lead
through
our
legislation,
city
council
and
these
projects.
It
really
demonstrates
that
we're
doing
all
that
we
can
to
address
climate
change
and
use
solar
as
a
way
to
get
people
back
to
work,
congratulations
and
take
care.
E
Hey
guys
trevor
pritchett
from
yards
brewing
company
here
yards
is
the
largest
and
longest
running
craft
and
production
brewery
based
in
the
city
of
philadelphia,
and
we
are
really
fired
up
about
this
new
solar
install
up
on
our
roof.
Environmental
sustainability
has
always
been
a
really
important
part
of
our
company
values.
In
fact,
we
have
a
nearly
zero
waste
production
process
and,
over
the
course
of
the
past
10
years,
we've
always
used
sustainable
energy
purchased
through
wind
racks.
E
E
What's
also
important
to
recognize
about
this
project
is
that
this
kind
of
investment
in
local
businesses
is
going
to
be
critical
as
we
work
through
this
recovery.
So
I'd
like
to
send
out
a
special
shout
of
thanks
to
our
landlord
alliance,
who
showed
a
lot
of
leadership
in
pulling
this
whole
project
together
to
the
city
of
philadelphia.
E
To
the
commonwealth
of
pennsylvania
and
governor
wolf,
and
especially
to
our
really
good
friends
at
solar
states
who
did
a
fantastic
job
of
of
putting
this
whole
install
together
and
and
their
workers
were
absolutely
fantastic.
So
special
thanks
to
everybody
and
cheers
can't
wait
to
taste
some
solar
powered
beer
have
at
it.
Ciao.
F
Hello,
my
name
is
matt
handel,
I'm
honored
to
represent
alliance
hsp,
the
property
owner
in
this
virtual
press
conference.
Lions
hsp
is
a
suburban
philadelphia-based,
real
estate
investment
firm
with
a
focus
on
office
and
industrial
redevelopment
projects
in
the
mid-atlantic.
This
particular
project,
which
we
call
sono,
is
located
in
the
northern
liberties
neighborhood
in
philadelphia.
F
It's
an
eight
acre
site,
it's
now
home
to
yards
brewery,
target
city
archives.
In
addition,
we're
under
construction
on
a
48
unit
apartment
building
with
11
000
square
feet
of
retail
that
will
deliver
next
year
and
we've
already
completed
a
large-scale
mural
with
the
mural
arts
program,
I'm
actually
standing
on
the
roof
of
the
sono
project.
As
we
record
this
virtual
press
conference.
F
The
project
didn't
pencil
initially,
however,
with
assistance
from
the
commonwealth
and
the
support
of
our
tenants,
we
were
able
to
pull
together
and
make
the
project
feasible
for
our
tenants.
Solar
installation
represented
a
hedge
against
future
utility
costs,
while
also
going
green
because
of
sustainable
objectives
for
alliance.
The
solar
initiative
was
a
way
to
align
ourselves
with
the
state
and
city
sustainability
objectives,
provide
a
very
valuable
base,
building
improvement
for
our
tenants
and
also
generate
a
satisfactory
return
for
our
investors.
F
It's
a
true
win-win-win
thank
yous
are
in
order,
we'll
start
off
with
our
investors
and
our
lender
tri-state
capital,
but
also
our
tenants.
I've
mentioned
that
before
the
city
of
philadelphia,
the
commonwealth,
governor,
wolf
mayor
kenny,
council
president
clark,
councilman
squilla,
all
of
city,
council,
solar
states,
the
energy
authority
and
the
commonwealth
finance
authority
took
a
team
effort.
It's
a
great
project
and
we
couldn't
be
more
thrilled
with
the
outcome.
Thanks,
what's
going
on.
G
Everybody,
this
is
micah
from
solar
state
yards
for
the
city
of
philadelphia
archive
space.
Thank
you
so
much
to
the
philadelphia
energy
authority
for
helping
us
get
this
together.
Thank
you,
so
much
to
alliance
hsp
for
funding
this
project
for
having
the
vision
to
see
this
thing
through
and
making
it
happen.
Thank
you
so
so
much
for
counseling
green's
office
for
helping
us
get
the
permits
right
and
everything
right
and
thank
you
to
armor,
electric
and
ibew
local
98
for
all
of
their
help.
G
G
G
G
I
love
this
project,
so
much
is
one
of
the
best
ones
that
I've
been
on
so
much
to
do
two
thousand
solar
panels
on
this
roof.
It's
amazing
that
we
are
producing
this
much
clean
energy
for
the
city
of
philadelphia,
yeah,
yeah,
yeah
yeah,
and
that's
what
it's
all
about.
It's
about
jobs,
it's
about
clean
energy,
it's
about
feeling
good!
It's
about
working
hard
and
doing
the
right
things
again.
Thank
you
to
everyone
who
has
supported
solar
states,
your
local
best,
solar
installation,
company
in
all
of
philadelphia
and
the
tri-state
area,
doing
big
things.
A
Thanks
so
much
to
everyone
for
joining
us
today,
a
reminder
that
philadelphia
property
owners,
both
commercial
and
residential,
can
sign
up
for
a
free,
solar
assessment
of
their
building
by
september

at
solarize

market
forward
happy
