Feb. 4, 2014 - Councilwoman At-Large Blondell Reynolds Brown discusses her "Philly First" Local Bidding Preference Bill, which passed unanimously out of the Council Committee on Commerce and Economic Development. The bill changes how the City awards contracts of $1 million or less by increasing the bidding preference for Philadelphi-owned businesses from 5 to 10 percent. The bill was co-sponsored by Councilman At-Large W. Wilson Goode, Jr.

are
a
number
of
us
on
City
Council
who
believed
that
still
too
many
dollars
are
going
outside
of
the
city
when
the
city
Awards
contracts.
So
the
chair
of
this
committee,
councilman
w
wilson
good
and
myself
felt
that
we
need
to
figure
out
a
way
to
tilt
opportunities
in
the
interest
of
local
philadelphia-based
businesses,
because
what
we
know
is
when
local
philadelphia-based
businesses,
when
opportunities
bid
opportunities.
It
brings
more
wage
taxes
to
the
city,
more
business,
privilege,
taxes
to
the
city
it
employs
they
employ
local
residents
and
a
view
of
a
25-percent
poverty
rate.
