morning,
yes,
the
this
item
is
before
you,
because
there
was
a
motion
earlier
this
year
requesting
a
presentation
on
the
parks,
Ambassador
Program,
so
I'm
here
to
give
a
short
presentation.
The
program
began
in
2003
to
proactively
address
issues
with
homeless
encampments
in
downtown
parks.
That
was
how
it
started
out
it.
H
The
program
has
expanded
geographically
over
the
years
when
the
program
began
back
in
2003,
it
focused
mainly
in
the
downtown
parks,
primarily
wards,
20,
27
and
28
in
the
years.
Since
then,
though,
the
response
efforts
have
broadened
geographically
throughout
the
entire
park
system,
wherever
they're
needed
and
they're
active
in
almost
every
ward
throughout
the
city.
However,
because
of
the
link
to
services
provided
by
shelter,
support
and
housing,
administration,
specifically
streets
to
homes,
the
majority
of
responses
are
still
in
the
downtown
area.

The
annual
budget
for
the
program
is
about
a
hundred
and
ninety
four
thousand
dollars
a
year.
This.
This
is
for
one
full
time:
staff
and
three
seasonal
staff,
who
runs
a
season
the
summer
spring
summer
fall
season
of
six
months.
So
we
have
two
teams
working
together
throughout
the
busier
season.
The
the
staff
themselves
very
much
pride
themselves
on
being
very
responsive
and
and
work
as
they
work
with
the
communities
in
making
the
parks,
safe,
green
and
accessible.
Equitable
places
to
be
ambassadors,
are
a
very
positive
community
presence.

They
act
as
the
eyes
and
ears
of
our
services
in
the
parks,
especially
in
neighborhood
parks.
They're.
There
conducting
Park
visits
community
night
walks
safety
audits
with
many
different
groups,
including
counselors
and
Toronto
police
services
throughout
certain
parks,
where
we
have
safety
concerns
right
from
the
well
throughout
the
entire
city,
and
through
this
they
are
building
connections
with
Park
users.
All
the
time
and
ensuring
that
Toronto's
vulnerable
are
also
getting
the
support
that
they
need.
H
As
in
when
we
come
in
contact
with
them
each
year
the
parks
ambassadors
document
many
thousands
of
of
engagements
and
interactions
with
people
in
parks,
including
community
members,
homeless,
individuals,
community
groups,
external
and
internal
stakeholders,
as
well
in
Crete,
we're
increasing
the
engagement
with
ceremonial
activities
and
culturally
specific
organizations
or
groups.
That's
just
something
that
seems
to
be
coming
up
more
and
more
we're
also
providing
information,
including
referrals
to
services,
agencies,
prevention,
programs
and
so
on
and
after
a
72-hour
notification
period.

We
have
a
respectful
way
of
removing
encampments,
supported
by
other
city
divisions,
with
efforts
to
establish
wraparound
services
for
all
the
individuals
that
are
impacted.
This
is
very
much
a
multi-stakeholder
approach
that
we
use
the
parks.
Ambassadors
are
tuned
into
parks
and
and
Parks
issues
across
the
city.
They
have
a
very
strong
supportive
relationship
with
our
park
supervisors
on
the
ground
and
also
they
help
enhance
the
effectiveness
of
their
work
and
making
sure
that
the
parks
are
ready
for
permits
and
and
whatever
activities
are
booked
in
those
spaces.

So
they
work
very
closely
with
the
park
supervisors
and
also
our
ravine
and
Water
Course
team
to
make
maintain
welcoming
parks
and
open
spaces.
They
identify
issues
and
opportunities
to
connect
with
programs
and
services
and
other
divisions
and
agencies,
including
shelter,
support
housing,
administration
facilities,
management,
real
estate
services,
transportation
services,
Toronto,
Police,
Services
and
others.
They
work
closely
with
Toronto
Police
Service
to
alert
one
another
of
potential
Park
demonstrations,
which
help
us
pre
plan
how
to
interact
with
those
groups
as
and
when
they
come
up.

We
have
a
strong
partnership
with
the
streets
to
homes,
program
and
the
parks
ambassadors
work
cooperatively,
especially
with
them
to
clear,
homeless,
encampment
encampments
and
provide
referrals
to
shelters,
housing
and
other
supports.
We
continue
to
strengthen
our
relationship
with
ssh,
a
to
best
understand
the
issues
and
modernize
efforts
to
ensure
responses
are
in
place
and
that
contacts
are
made.

This
helps
everybody
coordinate
efforts
and
it
insists,
assists
and
encourages
people
living
in
our
public
spaces
to
act
to
access
safer
and
healthier
alternatives
for
housing.
It's
a
lever
for
addressing
poverty,
health
and
well-being
through
coordination
with
other
city
divisions.
So
this
is
a
protocol
that
we
all
follow:
transportation,
the
shelter
support
and
housing
ourselves
and
police
and-
and
it's
sort
of
a
protocol
that
helps
us
know
exactly
who
does
what
and
what
services
we
provide.

The
the
whole
program
provides
a
park
lends
to
other
services.
We
document
we
support
and
provide
information
for
pfr
staff
and
other
internal
stakeholders,
such
as
streets
to
homes
and
possible,
and
possible
safety
and
accessibility
issues
get
identified.
So
the
program
really
has
an
impact
of
enhancing
parce
parks
and
changing
lives.

they
focus
on
areas
where
we
know
we
have
issues,
so
it
could
be
a
park
supervisor
anywhere.
That
is
trying
to
make
sure
that
there's
better
contact
made
than
just
simply
themselves

they
feel

equipped,
to
give
full
service
or
connect
people
to
the
right
places
and
services.
They
make
all
the
parks
ambassador
team
in
and
will
go
in.
So
if
we
find
for
at
perhaps
some
kind
of
an
encampment
in
a
ravine
and
North
York
somewhere,
we
may
get
the
parks.

the

those
types
of
programs
like
I,
think
it's
a
very
unique
program
to
pfn.

this
particular
one
with
the
one
full-time

It's
focused
around
the
times
of
year,
where
we
know
there's
the
greatest
need
for
this
kind
of
outreach,
but
I
couldn't
specifically
speak
to
whether
its
resource,
the
same
and
other
divisions
for
other
kinds
of
programs
like
that,
would.

think
we
do
try
to
document
the
more
significant
interactions
that
we
have
and
each
and
every
interaction
with
individuals
and
parks
cannot
be
recorded,
or
at
least
we.
We
don't
take
that
time
on
each
and
every
interaction,
simply
because
it
becomes
more
administrative
instead
of
action,
and,
having
said
that,
it's
always
great
to
have
those
kinds
of
statistics.
It's
it's
good
to
have,
and
we
do
have
quite
a
lot
of
information.

But
it's
it
depends
on
then
making
sure
that
we're
collecting
numbers
in
a
similar
way
as
say
streets
to
homes,
if
we're
doing
referrals,
for
instance,
that
each
and
each
of
our
referrals
is
what
they
would
call
a
referral
or
whatever.
And
so
those
are
the
kinds
of
discussions
that
we
sometimes
have
to
have
is.

provide
some
no

didn't
really
come
prepared
today
to
provide
actual
statistics,
but
I
think
that
would
be
something
that
perhaps
we
could
do
together
with
as
SSH
a
and
that
program
we've
got
other
numbers
outside
of
that
program.
As
you
know,

just
how
many
safety
audits
that
we
do
in
a
year
how
many
community
meetings
or
groups
have.
We
talked
with
how
many
visits
on-site
with
counselors
have
we
had
throughout
a
year,
and
those
are
numbers
that
are
not
part
of
any
other
program.

just
our
numbers.

panhandlers
along
my
Main
Street,
who
are
drinking
in
these
smaller
parks.
Is
that
something
which
the
park
ambassador
could
come
and
help
with
to
interact
with
these
people
to
find
out
why
they're
panhandling,
not
all
a
homeless?
Some
are.
Is
this
something?
So
it's
a
small
park
different
issues
would
would
they
be
engaged
in
this
as
well,
or
do
I
stick
to
my
police
and
streets
to
homes?
Well,.

Through
the
chair,
it's
it's
always
this
multi-agency
sort
of
ver
multi-divisional
sort
of
approach
that
we'll
use
it
depends
sometimes
on
the
property
it.
So
if
it's
transportation
services
will
engage
transportation,
if
it's,
if
there
in
law
in
fractions
such
as
illegal
substance,
abuse
will
engage
municipal
licensing
and
standards
or
police
as
necessary.

They
need
connections
to
somewhere
and
if
we
can
help,
we
often
do
help
will
will
point
them
in
the
direction
of
what
services
are
available
to
them,
but
we're
also
quick
to
point
out
what
is
proper
use
of
park
space
so
that
the
parks
are
free
and
open
for
people
to
actually
come
and
feel
safe
and
use
those
parks.
So
I'm
not
saying
we,
it's
not
us
I'm,
just
saying
each
and
every
case
is
different
and
we've
tried
to
work
with
the
councillor
on.
You
know
when
to
engage
as
in
when
we
can.

So
obviously,
residents
come
to
me
and
say
you
know
this
person's
drinking
in
the
park
is
smoking
by
a
playground,
get
them
out
of
there.
My
comeback
is
I
want
to
find
out
why
they're
drinking
in
the
park
why
they're
smoking
in
the
park
can
help
them
with
their
issue,
so
would
I
reach
out
to
the
parks
ambassador
and
how
would
I
do
that
so.

thank
staff
for
for
their
presentation
today.
I
do
have
a
motion
that
I
believe
I'm
sure
you'll
be
taking
carriage
of.
Perhaps
we
can
just
pop
the
motion
onto
the
screen,
so
people
can
see
it,
and-
and
that's
really
to
ask
that
the
staff
are
able
to
report
back
to
the
next
meeting
of
this
committee
on
any
budget
allocations
that
will
be
required
in
the
2018
parks
operating
budget
to
close
any
service
level
gaps
or
deficits,
and
really
we're
making
we're
making
some
moves
very
incrementally.

They
make
their
way
into
public
spaces
such
as
parks
and
the
ravines
and
our
public
squares
and,
and
they
need
to
be
spoken
to,
they
need
to
have
adequate
outreach
relationships
have
got
to
be
built,
and
sometimes
there
is
social
disorder,
whether
it's
the
consumption
of
alcohol
or
perhaps
illicit
drugs,
and
sometimes
there
are
encampments.
Then
they
come
with
all
sorts
of
physical
attachments.

This
is
in
no
way
a
program
that
is
supposed
to
eradicate
homelessness.
The
parks,
Ambassador
Program,
but
just
as
staff
as
I
have
so
clearly
stated,
is
that
the
parks
Ambassador
Program
works
in
conjunction
with
all
the
other
social
services,
including,
hopefully,
mental
health
services
and
providing
access
through
to
service
and
outreach.
But
it's
very
clear
to
me,
as
one
counselor
who
has
one
piece
of
the
Downtown
Midtown
area,
is
that
one
full-time
parks
ambassador
working
forty
hours,
where
the
entire
City
of
Toronto
is
simply
inadequate.

This
is
not
someone
who
sits
on
the
phone
and
and
picks
up
a
call
and
and
and
resolves
an
issue
in
20
minutes.
This
is
an
individual
with
the
three
seasonal
support
team
workers
that
go
out
physically
to
speak,
to
individuals
who
are
vulnerable
and,
and
that
takes
time
it
takes
time
to
build
relationships.

It
takes
time
to
connect
them
to
services,
and
so
at
this
moment
the
way
the
system
is
set
up
in
a
way
the
parks
ambassador
program
is
set
up
is
that
we
have
a
phenomenal
team
of
individuals
who
are
doing
the
service
delivery
but
they're
doing
far
more
than
they
than
they
are
being
compensated
to
do,
and
they
need
a
lot
more
people
to
provide
assistance.
So
the
situation
in
in
downtown
parks
and
ravines
are
going
to
continue
to
get
worse
and
not
better.

As
far
as
I
can
tell,
you
can
see
it
with
a
hundred
and
eighty
thousand
people
waiting
on
that
on
the
social
waiting
housing
list.
You
can
see
it
by
the
by
way
of
the
fact
the
shelter
beds
are
full
capacity,
so
it
makes
total
sense
to
see
the
overflow
take
place
in
in
the
parks
and
it's
very
difficult
work.
I
can't
stress,
madam
Speaker.
How
difficult
this
type
of
work
is
that
I
see
the
parks
ambassador
program
doing
day
in
and
day
out,
and
it's
not
just
about
outreach
with
people
who
are
Street
involved.

It's
about
just
making
sure
that
people
know
how
to
use
the
park
spaces
in
a
neighborly
fashion,
so
they
can
share
this
public
space.
It's
also
about
making
maintaining
order
in
a
sense
of
civic
responsibility,
all
that
takes
time
and
energy
and
it
takes
relationship
building,
and
you
cannot
do
that
with
one
person:
full-time
servicing,
a
city
as
large
as
ours.
So
thank
you
very
much,
madam
Speaker,
for
moving
the
motion
and
thank
you
to
the
committee
for
allowing
me
to
take
a
few
minutes
today.
I
The
park
very
well
have
been
there
before
and
perhaps
seen
or
spoken
with
some
of
the
parents
and
kids
at
the
park.
This
is
vital
in
us
developing
or
having
staff
that
can
develop
relationships
when
we,
when
we
reflect
back
on
the
days
of
community
policing
so
rather
than
having
police
in
vehicles
responding
to
emergencies,
but
having
people
that
develop
relationships
with
with
individuals
in
the
neighborhood.
I
That's
what
we're
talking
about
and
it
just
because
there
it's
much
better,
that
they're
not
in
a
position
of
authority
with
a
badge
and
a
gun
or
coming
from
the
shelter
support
and
housing
a
unit,
because
they're
they're
not
seen
as
threatening
or
as
being
as
stereotyping
individuals
in
in
the
park
there.
My
experience
with
our
parks,
ambassadors,
quite
the
opposite,
and
that
they
look
for
solutions
that
don't
not
only
help
the
individuals
that
are
living
in
the
parks,
but
also
those
that
are
living
around
the
parks.
I
And
they
often
are
that
bridge
between
the
two
and
do
it
very
very
effectively.
So
it
would
be
great
if
we
looked
at
a
at
an
expansion
of
a
program
so
that
resources
were
in
place
and
we
had
to
depend
probably
a
little
less
on
on
the
policing
side
and
a
little
bit
more
on
the
supportive
side
of
of
ensuring
people
have
what
they
need.

This
is
a
very,
very
important
program
and
I
feel
we
need
more
bodies.
We
need
more
people
out
there
because
I
agree.
We
have
so
many
parks,
one
person
so
many
hours
in
a
day,
I
get
encampments
in
my
Park
High
Park.
Actually,
a
couple
of
years
ago
we
had
the
most
amazing
yurt
built
south
of
High
Park.
It
was
in
a
tree
lined
area.
Unless
you
knew
it
was
there,
you
didn't
see
it.

A
gentleman
had
lived
there
for
quite
a
while,
but
you
can't
just
go
in
and
tell
him
he's
leaving,
because
those
are
his
possessions
one.
He
has
to
agree
to
leave.
Yes,
he's
nodding
over
there.
You
know
exactly
who
I'm
talking
about.
We
have
to
agree
to
leave
and
you
have
to
protect
his
possession,
so
he
can
get
them.
So
people
think
okay,
this
person's
being
annoying.

They
built
an
encampment
there
under
the
bridge
going
by
the
Humber
River
there,
wherever
they
are,
but
you
need
to
connect
them
to
the
commit
the
groups
who
can
help
them,
but
not
all
the
people
I
meet
in
our
parks
are
homeless.
They
are
panhandling
for
various
reasons,
and
I
often
go
up
to
them
and
ask
why
they're
doing
this
and
some
of
them
are
panhandling,
because
the
the
landlord's
just
put
their
rent
up
by
a
hundred
bucks
I
have
one
young
lady
who
has
to
Panhandle.

She
needs
an
extra
75
bucks
a
month
to
keep
her
child
in
child
cash,
doesn't
want
to
lose
her
child
they're
all
there
for
different
reasons.
So
as
much
as
I
involve
streets
to
homes
to
get
the
people
who
don't
have
a
home,
a
roof
overhead
and
somewhere,
they
can
call
home.
It's
not
always
that
simple
as
I
say,
blur
West
has
seen
an
increase
in
panhandlers
in
the
last
few
years,
and
when
I
asked
the
panhandlers,
why
they're
coming
they
say,
you're
generous.

We
can
make
more
money
here
in
a
shorter
period
of
time
than
being
in
another
location,
where
we
have
to
sit
on
the
street
all
day.
It's
okay,
my
residents
are
generous,
but
we
need
to
then
help
the
people
who
are
then
getting
alcohol
from
the
LCBO
and
going
into
our
parks
and
drinking,
and
then
these
kids
don't
want
to
go
play
on
the
playground
and
families
don't
feel
safe,
even
though
it
is
safe
sitting
in
the
park
and
having
lunch.

So
that's
where
I
don't
want
to
always
have
to
bring
in
the
police
because
they
can
be
intimidating.
We
actually,
in
my
ward,
do
have
very
good
community
police
officers
they're
on
their
bicycles.
They
go
through
the
parks.
They
are
around
the
Main
streets,
they're,
not
always
in
their
cars,
because
my
superintendent
several
years
ago
has
got
them
out
of
their
cars
and
into
the
parks.
But
you
don't
know,
as
I
say,
always
want
a
police
officer.
You
want
a
friendly
face,
someone
who
can
connect
them
with
the
organizations
who
can
help
them.

Maybe
they
need
to
get
off
the
alcohol?
Maybe
they
need
to
find
something
to
do
during
the
day.
Maybe
they
are
looking
for
a
job.
Let's
help
them
connect
to
these
organizations,
which
can
given
that
leg
up
to
help
them
get
on
with
their
lives.
So
I
do
support
expanding
us,
but
I
think
we
first
need
to
know
some
numbers
we
need
to
know.
Do
we
need
to
full-time
people?
Do
we
need
three
full-time
people?
Where
do
we
need
to
start
with
this?
So
we
know
budgets
are
always
tight
every
year.

need
that
data
before
this
committee.
For
us
to
be
able
to
say,
we
need
to
add
this
to
our
budget.
This
is
where
we
think
our
money
going
to
be
well-spent
and
basically,
as
I
say,
I
think
this
is
a
great
program
and
I
truly
believe
we
are.
They
are
stretched
very,
very,
very
thin
and
when
he
sees
three
seasonal
people,
what
season
do
you
have
one
in
the
winter
because
winter
we
can
have
people
freezing
outside
you
have
one
in
the
fall.

have
one

the
summer
when

opportunities

campaign
that
we

launched
with
the
supportive
council
is
every
tree
counts
and
I
just
wanted
to
clarify
the
foundation.

across

stewardship

been

on
neighborhoods
with

developed
our
granting
programs,
we've
launched

granting
programs

one
being

second

making
trees
count
grant
program,
and
we've
done
this
in
alignment

values
listed
under
the
city's
grants

invested
significant
effort
into
ensuring
that
our
grant
programs
are
addressing
diversity
and
equity.

goal

helping
citizens

providing
those
resources
to
empower
groups
and
groups
that
haven't
traditionally
been
part
of
the
tree
conversation
in
the
City
of
Toronto.

these
two
granting
programs,

Camp,
Grant
and
right
now,
the
the
window
for
applications
is
open.
Organizations
have
been
invited
to
submit
a
letter
of
interest
before
October
27th,
and
then
we
will
have
the
grant
review
committee
review
those.
So
it's
an
independent
grant
review
committee.

staff
does

sit
on
that
committee,
so
we're
able
to
work
hand-in-hand
with
groups
as
they
develop
their
ideas
for
this
program,
and
so
the
grant
review
committee

inviting
groups
to
make
full
applications,

will

these
grants
made
before
the

fiscal
year,

community

and
the
way
we've

doing
currently
so

aware,
our
full-service
backyard
tree
planting
program,
which
we
offer
across
the
city
of
Toronto.

full
service
we
actually
go
out,
send
an
arborist
out
for
a
consultation
in
the
yard
and
we
go
back
and
do
the
planting
with
the
DIY
version.
We
have
some
great
instructional
videos,
a
new
set
of
videos,
actually
that
are
on
our
website.
We
do
a
virtual
consultation,
so
we
still
meet
with
a
property
owner,
but
it's
actually
over
the
phone.

One
of
the
things
that
we
find
is
it's
really
it's
not
that
easy
for
people
to
get
the
right
tree
in
the
right
place,
and
so
that
hands-on
help
is
really
really
key.
These
are
just
some
visuals
of
happy
property
owners
with
their
trees
and
family,
various
family
members
enjoying
shade.
And
of
course,
one
of
the
main
focuses
for
us
is
going
back
in
person
to
visit
the
trees
and
do
health
assessments
and
make
sure
we're
actually
getting
good
survival
rates.

really
came
out
strongly
for
members
of
the
public
that
they
really
recognize
the
value
and
importance
of
engaging
members
of
the
public
in
tree
stewardship
and
some
of
our
most
vulnerable
trees,
of
course,
are
on
commercial
streets,
and
so
that's
where
very
clearly,
trees
are
suffering
from
all
kinds
of
stresses,
and
so
this
program
adopt
a
street
tree.
We've
been
working
on
for
three
years
in
partnership
with
the
city
and
I
think
some
of
councillors.

Here
today
we
have
projects
in
your
wards
and
it's
really
great
to
bring
all
the
stakeholders
together
to
try
to
tackle
this
really
complex,
challenging
situation
for
commercial
street
trees.
So
we
work
with
bi,
A's,
community
residents,
associations,
environmental
groups,
the
local
councillor
and
individual
businesses
as
well
to
try
to
get
people
just
doing
very
simple,
do's
and
dont's
around
commercial
street
trees
to
help
them
out.
We
developed
a
manual
for
this,
so
I
have
a
bunch
of
copies
today
that
I
can
leave,
and
it's
also
online.

do
a
tree
inventory
and
health
assessment
as
one
of
our
first
steps
in
this
project
and
that
really
gets
citizens
engaged
and
interested
simple.
Google
map
platform
that
we
use
and,
of
course
we
have
our
launch
events
that
usually
involve
a
tree
tour,
and
these
are
things
that
you
know:
people
just
really
get
excited
about
learning
the
species
and
and
what
they
can
do.
They
really
do
have
a
stake
in
these
trees.

adoptive
Park
Tree,
where
we
work
in
city
parks,
where
what
we've
done
here
is
we've
combined
this
with
our
young
urban
forest
leaders,
so
young
women
work
with
us
for
about
five
or
six
months.
They
get
training

mentorship
from
leaf
stuff
and
they
work
with
Friends
of
parks
groups
to
start
up
adopt
a
part
tree
program.
So
this
is
simple
watering,
monitoring
and
care
that
residents
can
provide
to
trees
and
parks,
and
this
is
just
a
map
of
our
past
projects.

usually
also
like
to
leave
the
groups
with
stewardship
plans
for
their
parks,
so
this
is
all
done
in
partnership
with
parks
staff
as
well
as
forestry
staff,
so
we're
also
helping
build
those
relationships
so
that
the
groups

these
projects
after
we've
been
working
with
them
and
then.
Finally,
this
is
a
new
program
this
year
that
we
worked
with
parks,
forestry
and
Recreation
on
which
is
really
exciting,
to
have
all
three
departments

were
working

out

about
23
workshops
over
the
summer
and
mulch
283
trees
in
water
and
the
kids
really
love
the
hands-on
part
of
it.
That's
the
most
exciting
part
for
them.

had
them
for
about
an
hour
and
a
half
for
each
session,

we're
looking
at
improving
on
this
for
next
year,
potentially
making
it
more
of
a
full-day
visit
for
the
kids.

came
from
surrounding
wards
and
this
was
a
pilot
year,
but
it
went
really
well
and
it
was
great
to
have
younger
kids
actually,
really,
they
just
really
loved
the
hands-on
part,
this
activity.
So
it's
something
that
we
can
continue
to
work
on
and
and
could
be
replicated
potentially
another
other
parks.

biggest
challenge
we
have

think
I'm
really
happy
that
in
the
strategy
there's
a
lot
of
discussion
about
tree
stewardship
and
tree
care,
because
it's
probably

experience-

20
percent
planting
an
80
percent
engagement
and
care
really
for
the
actual
success.
If
you
want
to
look
at
long
term
of
success,
beings,
a
right
tree
right,
place,
long-lived
actually
giving
us
those
benefits.

could
spend

lot
of
time
planting
trees,
but
if
we
don't
have
that
care
in
place,
it's
futile.

backyards,

Our
trees
are
five
to
eight
feet
in
height

15
gallon
potted
stock,
and
these
are
smaller
a
bits
there's
comparable
to
the
size
that
you

they're
smaller
than
what
you
would
see
in
a
park
planted.

those
need

be
larger
because
they're
at
more

foundation
would
be
the
lead
agency
and
we're
using
s
DFA
as
sort
of
experts
in
granting
to
help
us
and
guide
us
through
that
granting
process.
So
we're
reporting
back
on
that
I
think
on
an
update
that
on
that,
when,
when
that
whole
program
is
developed,
we
can
report
back
on
the
granting.
It
is
a
different
kind
of
programs,
the
first
time
we've
done
it.

aware,
when
we
get
the
list
from

DFA,
we
get
all
the
lists
of
those
who
have
been
receiving
grants.
We
get
those
who
are
receiving

is
for
everything
the

single
program

city
funds

in
that
very
public,
publicly
accountable,

and
there's
no
administration
fees
of
any
kind.

believe
that

leaf,

it's
great,

leaf

receiving
some
direct
funds

programs.
They're
already
doing.
I
also
think
it
is
great
that
urban
forestry
is
not
just
relying
on
that
funding.
They're,
also
helping
leaf
get
funding
from
other
sources.
You
know,
TD
Friends
of
environment
is
a
great
source
in
my
past,
I've
done
a
few
applications
myself
and
helped
them
do
more
programs.

So
the
reason
I
was
asking
about
the
adopter
Tree
program
was
so
a
street
tree.
It's
vital.
It
is
vital.
We
found
two
summers
ago
that
are
trees
in
our
BIA.
S
were
suffering
desperately
with
the
hot
summers
and
our
BIA
s
were
not
in
the
position
at
that
point
to
bring
in
more
watering,
so
we've
relied
on
leaf
and
other
community
groups
with
a
wagon
with
a
rain
barrel,
and
watering
cans
and
I
tried
it
once
it
was
hard
work,
because
where
do
you
get
your
water
from
well,
these
guys
were
brilliant.

They
went
to
our
local
park,
a
block
away
from
the
main
street
filled
up
this
rain
barrel,
with
water,
from
the
wading
pool
not
from
the
wading
pool
but
from
the
water
source
to
the
wading
pool
trundled.
This
all
the
way
back
down
to
the
street
and
watered
as
many
trees
as
they
can.
This
year,
they've
teamed
up
with
the
same
community
group,
which
is
not
the
BIA
to
bring
in
youth,
to
train
and
to
show
and
to
do
an
inventory
and
to
help
our
businesses
get
involved.

But,
as
he
heard
me
say,
to
Janet,
the
trees
aren't
ready
to
be
watered
they've
been
walked
on,
they've,
been
abused
for
so
many
years
that
you
pour
water
on
it
and
it
just
doesn't
absorb
because
it's
almost
the
song
to
concrete
adopter
poetry,
excellent
program,
I
participated
in
one
in
my
ward,
I
learned
so
much
and
the
kids,
the
kids
they
had
had
so
much
fun
and
they
always
make
their
programs
fun,
which
means
kids,
learn
when
they're
having
fun.
They
were
identifying
trees.

I
didn't
stay
around
for
the
mulching,
but
I
think
we
mulch
the
trees
with
children
rather
than
the
mulch
at
some
points.
So
again,
it's
that
engagement,
the
backyard
tree
planting
is
very,
very
important.
They've
done
it
for
years,
they've
got
it
down,
pat
and
I
know
that
leaf
and
urban
forestry.
It's
not
just
the
fact
you
plant
a
tree.
It's
you
want
that
tree
to
live
and
without
doing
the
education,
which
is
now
the
tree
for
me,
I
know
again
coming
into
our
ward.

For
a
second
year
in
a
row,
you
have
to
educate
people
how
to
plant,
maintain
your
tree
and
your
shrubs,
because
otherwise
we're
basically
planting
for
a
tree
to
die,
which
isn't
that
idea
of
this
I
do
believe.
Toronto
parks
and
trees
is
the
way
to
to
funnel
this
money.
Funnel
is
probably
the
wrong
word.

I
have
to
come
up
with
a
better
word
than
that
one
to
disperse
the
money,
because
they
can
also
reach
out
to
partners
who
may
not
want
to
come
and
partner
with
the
city
may
not
maybe
can't
partner
with
the
city,
so
I
have
had
fantastic
success,
with
Toronto
parks
and
trees
on
individual
projects.
Yes,
when
they
were
formed
originally
they
were
working
with
paper
on
a
desk
when
they
got
their
first
computer
program
going.

We
crashed
it
with
one
of
my
fundraisers
I
apologized
and
I
keep
apologizing,
but
it's
because
I
Toronto
parts
and
trees
being
that
that
helped
to
our
communities
who
need
the
tax
receipts.
That's
great
I
feel
they
are
the
right
people
to
look
after
this
money,
because
it's
easier
to
access
then
sometimes
going
to
a
city
to
get
money.
They
are
set
up
to
hand
out
the
grants.
They're
set
up
to
work
with
these
organizations
to
help
them
work
out
how
they
can
apply
for
these
grants.

would
like
some
feedback,
though,
from
how
this
grant
works.
I'd
like
to
know
who
has
received
the
grant
who's
applied
for
the
grants,
because
I
think
that's
important
I'd
like
to
know
these.
Were
these
groups
reporting
back
that
they've
spent
the
money
where
they're
meant
to
spend
the
money
and
I'd
also
like
to
see
the
fundraising
which
the
Toronto
partisan
trees
is
able
to
do
because,
as
I
say,
they
can
partner
with
groups
which
the
city
can't
necessary
partner
with
it's
a
beginning
process,
it's
a
new
one.

outside
the
box

think
it's
excellent.
We
got
to
give
them
a
year
or
two
to
get
it
up
and
running
properly,
because
nothing
happens
immediately.
Not
everyone
knows
they
have
to
learn
about.
We
can
come
and
get
these
grants,
and
this
is
how
we
have
to
team
up
with
someone
to
apply
for
these
grants.
I
think
it's
excellent
and
I
truly
hope
that
we
are
able
to
plant
enough
trees
to
counteract
the
trees
I
saw
when
I
was
driving
in
today.

to
unbalance
the
tree,

lot
of
trees
now,

from
the
last
24
hours,
which
probably
have
to
be
removed,

City

Toronto,

11
o'clock,
I
watched
crews
cut
a
tree
branch
out
of
a
hydro
wire
and
all
the
lights
were
out.

was
very
interesting
to
see
what
happens
with
mature
trees
and
how
we
need
to
replace
them.

young
person
and
summer
camps
that
the
city
is
running
they're
already
there,
so
it's
a
great
layer
on
and
I
do
want

notion
of
the
charitable
status
is
something
that
I
think
we

reviewing

we
go
forward

around
the
granting
process.
This
is
our
first
time
to
look
at
how
we're
going
to
be
doing
that
and
whether
or
not
since
we're
using
an
SDF
a
model.

what
is
that
actual
model?

be
watching
that
one
as
it
rolls
out
to
see?
If
maybe
there
is
a
more
direct
way
to
do
that

what

how

why
we
need
to
have
a
charitable
status.
There
may
be
lots
of
people
that
don't
have
charitable
status
so
to
explain
the
one
program
that
was
so
successful.
We
got
quite
a
few
thousand
dollars
when
the
Portland
Energy
Center
was
going
in
in
the
waterfront.

They
had
to
give
charitable
dollars
through
not
charitable
money
through
public
health
for
air
quality
in
the
East
End,
and
one
of
the
projects
that
was
funded
was
through
the
South
Riverdale
Community
Health
Center,
with
Leif
and
University
of
Toronto,
and
the
tree
project
was
created
as
a
tree
project.
It
didn't
have
a
charitable
number.
It
was
the
tree
project
coming
with
dollars
and
partners,
not
none
of
whom
I
think
had
a
charitable
number
lead.
The
leaf
was
help
put
that
together.
Then
someone
was
hired,
who
ran
that
project.

was
has
been
replicated
different
places.
We
have
adopt
a
tree
in
Withrow,
Park,
100
trees
were
put
in
and
threw
leaf.
We
had
adopt
a
tree
and
every
single
one
of
those
trees
was
watered
all
summer.
So
we
have
to
have
people
that
know
how
to
deliver
tree
programs
and
those
who,
as
I
understand
it,
are
making
sure
all
the
money
is
accounted
for,
etc.
It's
like
the
foundation,
the
food
foundation
that
I
sit
on.
It's
not
a
directly
operated
foundation.

could
use
a
great
program
like
we
did,
have
it
Leslie
belt
or
in
Riverside
and
Riverdale,
where
the
story
in
the
pocket,
where
somehow
with
the
street
trees,
there
is
the
capacity
to
be
going
back
to
make
sure
the
owner
is
looking
after
them.
They
think.
Oh,
it's
a
city
tree
I,
don't
really
have
to
look
after
it.
That
to
me
is
the
one
place
where
the
follow
up
is
missing
and
I.
Think,

if
we
weren't

we
were

parks

trees
foundation,

distribute
the
funding
to
the
groups

it's

monitor

the
groups
deliver
their
programming
and
so
there's
plenty
of
follow-up.
We
will
receive
the
lists
of
who
who
applied
for
grants
who
didn't
receive
their
grant.
Why
and
what

it's
all
gonna

transparent.

the

seen
in
parks
for
litter,
free
event
was
soup
stock
in
Woodland
Park,
and
the
only
thing
I
saw
on
the
ground
was
one
stainless
steel
spoon
and
that
was
40,000
people
in

park

day,

that
is
that's
a
good
role
model,
so
I
think
we
can
do.

can
do
better
and
this
helps
ensure
it.
