taking

use

got

bachelor's

environmental

ecological
engineering

Colorado
State
University,
with
a
couple
minors
in
sustainability,
sustainability.
Being
one
of
my
really
passions
and
career
goals,
I've
been
on
March
1st
it'll
be
my
two
years
with
South
Platt
renewal
and
then
before
that,
I
worked
for
a
little
bit
doing
some
research
in
the
forest
service.

we
got

I

the
first
half
the
presentation
and
cover
the
pipeline
injection
project.
I
was
just
the
major
Milestone
sustainability
project
that
we
got
going
on
there
and
you'll
see
carbon
offset
is
in
the
presentation
at
the
end
of
my
presentation,
pretty
incredible
so
we'll
cover
just
an
overview
of
spr
and
then
we'll
get
into
the
pipeline
injection
project
offset
and
then
from
there.
Shan
will
discuss
the
energy
management.

that
project
progressing
so
yeah,
so
subplot
renew
is
the
third
largest
resource
recovery
facility
in
the
state
of
Colorado.
We
process
waste,
of
or
300
000
residents,
pitches
about
0.5
million
gallons
and
put
that
context.
That's
about
40
olympic
size
swimming
pools
in
a
single
day.
So
we
got
a
lot
of
water
coming
through
our
facility.
One
thing:
I,
actually

sustainability
right.
An
EPA
defines
sustainability
and
sorry.

read
this:
the
ability
to
create
and
maintain
the
conditions
in
which
humans
in
nature
can
exist
in
productive
farming
to
support
present
and
future
Generations.
When
you
look
at
cell
plot,
renew
really
is
that
interface
between
humans
and
nature.
We
take
the
waste
of
civilization
and
we
transform
it
into
clean
water
that
we
replenish
South,
Platte,
River,
Downstream,
watersheds
and
and
provide
you
know,
drinking
water
for
for
Downstream
of
the
rehearsal.
Hence
our
vision
is
to
renew
water
for
Colorado's
future,
just
kind
of
envelops
that
sustainability
definition.

Not
only
do
we
treat
the
Wastewater,
but
as
a
byproduct
of
that
treatment
process,
we've
created
biosolids
that
biosolid
is
a
very
nutrient-rich
carbon
source
and
we
ship
that
out
or
truck
that
out
to
farms
for
land
applications.
So
we
reuse
that
waste
for
fertilization
for
crops
and
as
a
byproduct
of
that
bio
bio
solids
process,
we
create
vital
gas.

own
Farms
with
new
buyers
in
Colorado,
so
we
lease
them
out
to
Farmers
it's
mostly
for
like
wheat
and
corn,
but
they
kind
of
change
up
the

crops
crop

put
on
there.
I
actually
went
to
the
farms
for
the
first
time
a
couple
weeks
ago,
and
it
is
a
crazy
operation.

So
the
this
is
gonna
be
an
overview
of
what
the
infrastructure
of
biogas
the
facility
looks
like,
so
biogas
is
produced
in
the
anaerobic
digesters
through
biological
processes.
Like
I
said
it's
a
byproduct
of
that
biology,
breaking
down
the
the
carbon
and
the
office
is
spot
I
guess
so
that
biogas
is
then
sent
down
a
pipeline
to
the
digester
gas
conditioning
skin,
which
is
where
all
the
treatment
happens.
That's
where
the
conversion
of
the
biogas
to
renewable
natural
gas
occurs.

The
renewable
natural
gas
is
then
injected
into
the
Excel
Energy
pipeline,
which
is
just
a
few
hundred
feet
to
the
west
of
the
upgrading
system,
and
there
is
a
small
waste
stream
that's
produced,
but
we
send
this
waste
stream
to
original
thermal
oxidizer,
which
is
a
high
temperature
incinerator
that
reused
any
remaining
greenhouse
gas
amazing
compounds
that
we,
that
is,
that
waste
stream.
So
it's
a
very
sustainable
process.

the
to
answer
that
question
we
do
put
about
60
or
it's
a
little
bit
longer.
Obviously
don't
capture
all
the
methane
now,
but
it's
around
two
about
200
stfm
of
gas
for
about
250,
decks
of
energy.

So
the
biogas,
like
I,
said
a
60
methane
40,
carbon
dioxide
goes
through
the
pipeline
and
then
just
the
first
stage
of
the
process,
which
is
hydrogen
sulfide
removal.
It
just
goes
through
a
scrubber
and
then
it's
an
absorption
scrub.
When
you
removed
from
the
sold
by
compound,
it's
then
sent
to
a
condenser
which
is
a
glorified
heat
exchanger
that
drops
out
any
water
vapor,
that's
within
the
biograss,
because
you
can't
send
water
into
compressor
or
also
taking
just
compressor
and
that's
the
next
stage.

So
we
compress
the
biogas
from
atmospheric
pressure
all
the
way
up
to
200
pounds
per
square
inch,
and
it
goes
through
three
stage
filtration
process
to
remove
the
trace.
Contaminants
that
are
found
by
a
gas
bottle
board
games
the
selections.
Then
it
goes
to
the
final
purification
step,
which
is
a
two-stage
memory
process,
and
this
is
like
where
all
the
magic
happens
right.
This
is
where
the
separation
process
happens
between
the
carbon
dioxide
and
the
methane.

Is
the
city
of
Boulder
has
one,
but
it's
much
smaller
than
Metro,
which
is
the
biggest
with
landing
on
it,
but
haven't
done
it
yeah
same
with
Colorado
Springs
they're,
the
second
largest,

again

I'd
say
bold,
is
probably
the
most
comparable
city
of
Longmont
and
City
of
Grand
Junction
have
them,
but
they
do
they
make
it
into
fuel
to
fuel
their
vehicles,
so
they
have
like
the
recycling.
Vehicles
are
powered
up.
So
it's
really
conveniently
located
that
the
Excel
pipeline
is
literally
right
outside
our
event.

time-
and
it
just
made
a
lot
more
sense
to
that,
instead
of
fueling
trucks,
how
long
was
the
construction
process?
It
was
long,
so
it
was
about
two
years
with
all
startup
and
commissioning.
So
it's
a
pretty
complex
system
and
making
sure
it
all
worked
right.
So
the
the
startup
of
it
alone
was
probably
like
four
months
four
months
trying
to
get
everything
done.

just
that
tiny
little
box
in
there,
but
they
had
this
I'm
gonna
chromatograph
and
all
the
analytes
and
things
that
they're
anyway
out
of
spec,
they
close
the
valve
and
we
can't
go
so.
We
have
to
make
sure
that
this
thing
is
operating
really
well
to
make
sure
that
it
is
building
all
of
their
standards.
And
then
we
have
this
crazy
annual
sampling
machine.

since
we
have
been
in
production,
we
have
produced
220
million
cubic
feet
of
renewable
natural
gas.
That's
a
lot
of
energy
and
to
put
this
in
a
sustainable
aspect.
That's
so.
In
one
day
of
production
we
offset
13
metric
tons
of
carbon
dioxide.
In
a
single
year
we
offset
3
600
metric
tons
of
carbon
dioxide
and
over
the
Project
Life
we've
offset
11
800
metric
tons
of
two.
It's
really
really
neat
and.

the

guess
the
infrastructure
yet

the
goal
is
to
kind
of
pay
this
back.
So
we
have,
you
know
at
a
construction
cost
and
so
pay
it

revenue

we're
getting

then
ultimately
like
look
at
the
cost
value
of
what
natural
gas
costs
versus
what
it
is
to
treat,
because
it
is
a
pretty
so
we're
trying
to
balance
what
we
purchase
and
what
we
produce

Think
in
the
long
run.
That
would
probably
be
the
what
we
were
aiming
for.

dollar
question
we
are
so
the
rent
prices
has
dropped
a
little
bit
to
about
two
bucks,
but
the
the
forecast,
and
after
talking
to
our
renewable
broker,
they
are
thinking
that
it
will
rebound
and
we'll
probably
go
back
around
soon.
They
think
it's
going
to
stabilize
around
250.,
but
that's
that's
just
future
progression
is.

to
start
this
process,
which
energy
are
we
using,
and
the
answer
is
quite
a
bit
but
to
dive
deeper
into
that.
We
wanted
to
look
at
really.
Where
is
this
energy
going?
Where
are
major
users
on
science?
We
have
a
lot
of
pumps,
a
lot
of
blowers,
a
lot
of
big
mechanical
equipment
and
then,
from
this
we
actually
found
out
the
digesters
which
reduce
the
natural
gas
I
go
to
our
bioskid
or
biogas.

So
we
really
wanted
to
take
a
look
at
how
much
energy
are
we
using
per
million
gallons
per
day
that
are
treated
and
typically,
what
we'd
see
is,
as
the
flow
goes
down,
your
energy
was
is
going
down
because
theoretically,
you're
pumping
less
water,
you're
aerating,
less
water,
we
actually
saw
the
opposite.
Our
energy
has
been
increasing
in
the
last
few
months,
so
this
Baseline
just
really
gets
us
thinking.
It
starts
opening
up
opportunities
for
projects
specifically
looking
at
where
we
use
the
most
energy.

Those
are
just
the
biggest
opportunities
to
reduce
the
amount
of
energy
that
we're
using.
So
that
kind
of
goes
into
the
second
step
of
this
project
and
that's
identifying
those
initiatives,
those
projects
they're
going
to
pull
our
energy
usage
down
and
potentially
reduce
energy.
So
the
big
one
up
at
the
top.
We
unfortunately
still
use
a
whole
lot
of
fluorescence
about
our
site.

But
we're
looking
to
switch
over
to
all
LEDs
and
any
new
construction
is
obviously
LEDs
and
then
the
next
one,
that's
really
exciting.
To
kind
of
tackle
that
high
digester
use
is
actually
thermal
heat
recovery
from
the
Wastewater
itself,
so
we're
kind
of
looking
into
recovering
some
of
the
heat
from
the
Wastewater
that's
coming
in
to
then
beneficially
use
that
to
keep
the
digesters
itself,
it's
a
really
fascinating
new
technology.

It's
been
done
a
couple
places
in
Colorado,
so
kind
of
looking
into
that
and
then
more
into
just
the
process
and
how
we
run
the
plant
adding
controls.
We
have
variable
frequency
drives
on
all
of
our
large
pots
and
phones.
That
way,
if
the
float
does
go
down,
we
can
ramp
the
pumps
down.
You
know
we're
not
running
them
at
full
speed
all
the
time.
If
we
only
have
half
the
flow
in
there
and
the
same
for
process
changes.

You
know
at
the
end
of
the
day,
clean
water
is
the
name
of
our
game,
but
if
we
can
optimize
that
a
lot
of
times
optimizing
treatment
also
reduces
how
much
energy
we're
using.
So
we
take
a
really
close
eye
on
that,
along
with
our
operations,
crew
and
then
more
efficient
technology.
Like
we
mentioned,
the
plant
is
very
old.
We
have
a
lot
of
equipment,
Replacements
coming
up
asset
renewable
projects,
we're
really
trying
to
pay
more
attention
to
what
we're
placing
our
equipment
with
and
being
more
mindful
of
the
equipment
that
we're
purchasing.

So
we
use
an
Enterprise
fund,
so
it's
rates
and
fees
of
the
customers
there's
also
connector
District
fees,
because
we
are
owned
by
city
of
Englewood
and
city
of
Littleton
in
the
19
Connector
districts,
so

So
our
Capital
plan.
We
do
it
on
a
5,
10
20
projection
and
that
basically
creates
the
rates
and
fees
from
there.
So
I
think
it's
a
really
exciting
time
to
be
part
of
Wastewater,
because
there's
a
lot
of
new
regulations
happening
right
now.

it's
the
the
planning
effort
and
trying
to
figure
out
how
we
can
pay
for
these
upgrades.
Have
you
guys
heard
of
pfas
yeah
keep
boss
is
a
big
concern
for
us,
because
that's
going
to
be
very
expensive
to
treat
also
temperatures
a
big
one
that
we
need
to
maintain
so
that
long-term
capital
planning
and
how
we
fund
things
is
something
the
Director
of
Human
Rights.

In
that
one
of
the
neat
things
about
especially
a
large
wastewater
treatment,
plant
and
I,
it
took
me
a
while
to
figure
out
how
why
that
is
so
positive.
It's
been
talking
about
for
years,
but
the
with
drought
conditions,
the
the
pro
the
pro
the
water
you
are
producing
by
customer
use
being
reintroduced
to
the
river
is
going
to
be
more
and
more
critical
and
I.
Think
that's
also
beautiful
yeah.

I'm
pretty
excited
to
see
what
they
do
with
water
reuse.
So
it's
actually
taking
the
water
like
what
we
do
and
maybe
not
putting
it
directly
into
South
Platt
or
using
it
for
other
purposes
and
stuff.
So
I
think
that
the
new
regulations
actually
just
went
in
for
Colorado
to
do
reuse
not
just
for
irrigation,
but
to
look
into
like
potentially
using
it
for
drinking
water
and
things
like.

another
cool
one
that
we
look
at,
that's
not
quite
a
project,
but
it's
more
like
manipulating
when
we're
using
energy
is
maintaining
like
our
high
energy,
using
processes
outside
of
the
demand
period.
So,
two
to
seven,
we
have

pretty
intense
demand
charge,
especially
when
we
peak
in
that
period,
so
any
like
back
flushes
cleanings,
like
larger
energy,
intensive
processes
that
we
can
keep
outside
of
the
period
to
lower
that
Demand
on
the
grid.

absolutely
look
into
that
and
then
finally,
which
I
think
is
super
exciting,
is
looking
into
more
Nobles.
You
know
we're
already
doing
biogas.
We
have
a
great
opportunity
on
some
new
buildings,
potentially
for
solar,
that
we're
going
to
look
into
and
potentially
some
opportunity
for
a
win
to
actually
out
at
our
farm
audience.
Yeah.

kind
of
along
with
these
really
exciting
projects
that
we
get
to
do
is
really
the
culture
around
energy.
You
want
to
make
sure
our
staff
leadership.
Everyone
knows
that
we
are
an
organization
that
not
only
uses
a
lot
of
energy
but
we're
conscious
about
how
we
use
it
and
how
we
maintain
it.
So
that
goes
into
a
lot
of
this
energy
management
master
plan
is
the
actual
program
developing
an
energy
policy
and
energy
goals.

have
something
to
work
towards
making
sure
our
communication
with
leadership
is
up
to
date
so
that
they
give
us
buy-in
they're,
supporting
what
we're
doing,
and
it's
kind
of
a
two-way
street
there
and
then
forming
our
actual
energy
team.
So
you
know
it's
not
just
me
and
Brian
doing
all
this,
but
a
group
of
dedicated
and
really
passionate,
because
there
are
a
lot
of
passionate
spr
staff
members
that
want
to
be
involved
in
these
energy
projects
and
then
next
is
really
integrating
energy
efficiency.
Energy
consideration
into
everything
we
do.

Jamie
said,
we
have
a
very
aggressive
Capital
plan,
making
sure
as
we're
doing
projects,
even
if
they're
not
like,
aimed
at
energy
production
or
reduction
they're,
still
considering
energy,
especially
like
procurement
policies
when
we're
getting
new
equipment.
That
kind
of
thing
it's
in
our
prioritization,
it's
in
our
thinking
and
it's
in
our
design
same
with
contract
documents
making
sure
we
have
standardized
language
in
there
that
when
we
do
projects
we
are
considering
energy
as
a
factor
just
to
be
consider
regulations.

know
infrastructure
asset
condition,
that
kind
of
thing
and
then
finally,
is
the
exciting
part.
We
actually
get
to
implement
all
these
projects,
a
couple
of
them
that
I
mentioned
earlier
and
then
from
this
project,
we've
also
identified
some
further
assessments.
One
really
exciting
one
is
our
energy
resilience
and
our
ability
to
you
know
bounce
back.
If
we
ever
needed
to
produce
our
own
energy.

one
is
Financial
for
sure.
There's
a
lot
of
big
things.
It's
a
very
big
plant,
a
lot
of
to
those
that
being
fiscally
responsible
and
making
sure
that
we
can
meet
all
regulations
on
these
future
regulations

especially
with
like
the
unknowns.
We
don't
really
know
what
direction
pfos
is
going
to
go
and
things
like
that.
So
it's
a
big
unknown
and
then
I
would
say
personally
it's
recruitment
and
retention,
yeah.

maybe
that's
just
because
I
live
that
more
day
to
day.
But
if
we
don't
have
the
people
to
run
the
facility
or
to
look
at
the
energy
and
stuff,
we
can't
we
can't
progress,
and
so
it's
a
very
competitive
market
out
right
now,

so
we
you
know,
making
sure
that
we
can
retain
and
attract
great
talent,
because
it's
just
getting
more
technologically
advanced
and
sophisticated.
So
it's
it's
just
a
different
type
of
wasteful.

in
the
engineering

finally
filled
our
recruitments

this

just

competitive

people,

I
think
it's

career

much

conscious

process

right

sustainability.

that's
a
waste
and
we're
turning
it
into
water,
fertilizer
and
gas,
but
we're
using
a
lot
of
energy
to
do
it,
and
we
want
to
be
conscious
about
that.
We
want
to
take
the
next
step
in
being
sustainable
and
really
managing
our
energy
and
the
end
goal.

that's
offset

solar
or
wind
or
what
that
might
be
and
I
think
there's
a
lot
of
opportunity
for
more
advanced
technology

equipment
to
lower
energy
and
stuff.

planning
and
how
we're
doing
that,
there's
a
lot
to
that
as
well.

assessment
done
for
the
whole
plant
and
there
are
a

opportunities

open
space
for
solar.

want
to
keep
in
mind,
like
future
expansion
say
if
flows
go
up

we
need
to
treat
to
so
those
buildings
are
kind
of
like
it
already
has
a
footprint.
It's
already
ready
to
go.
It's
a
nice
white
flat
buildings
to
put
on,
but
there
are
certainly
some
opportunities
on
the
plant
side.

that
means
is
that
this
group,

suggest
that
the
city

really
up
to
city,
council
or
city
staff
if
it's
appropriate
there,
but
you
have
to
advisory
committee,
but
wow,
do
you
guys
do
a
lot
of
work,
at
least
for
the
last
in
the
last
year,
so
alternates
they
cannot
vote
unless
they
are
needed
to
make
a
quorum.

we

believe
I'm
gonna

where
we
are
for
that
one

then
so
as
a
member,
you
cannot
work

the
city

any
capacity,

material

process

It
can

used
to
sequester

pollution
and
rich
soil.
Reduce
irrigation
needs,
reduce
the
need
for
fertilizers
and
it's
a
carbon
negative
agricultural
process.
It's
one
of
the
few
processes
that
you
could
actually
take
more
cart.

don't
use
as
much
carbon
as
the
carbon
that
you
sequester
or
you
put
into
use
all
the
other
technology
processes,
whether
sucking
air
in
and
pulling
carbon
out
of.
It
are
incredibly
energy
dependent
tons
of
electricity.

this

an
ancient
process.
It
was
done
in
the
Amazon

years
ago.
It
was
done
in
Egypt
six
thousand
years
ago,
in
the
most
simplistic
terms,

more
of
a
biologist

have
a

the

for
the

backyard
fire
pit,
my
dirty
charcoal,
which
will
work
like
biochar,
it
might
be

pure
carbon
with
other
stuff
in
it
and
if
I
put
it
in
my
garden,
it
will
do
some
good
things
for

soil,

what
they
found
when
they
studied
these
ancient
hits
and
the
ones
in
the
Amazon
are
fascinating,
because
the
Amazon
does
not
have
soil,
you
think
of
jungle,
but
the
soil
and
the
Amazon
is
about
that
thick.
It's

It's
terrible
and
the
plant
life
basically
is
is
aerobic
or
it
takes
stuff
off
the
trees
and
the
Moss.
They
found
pits
that
were
over
two
meters:
deep,
full
of
biochar
and
Rich
loamy
soil,
7,
000
years
old.
Somehow
these
Indian
cultures
figured
out
how
to
make
high
quality
bioshar
and
create
garden
plots
and
the
garden
plots
are
still
producing
today.
So
the
fertility
and
the
and
the
outcome
of
what
comes
from
these
things
is
amazing.

Four
major
opportunity
areas
for
biochar:
let's
just
talk
for
a
guy
of
Mother
Earth,
it's
a
great
way
for
carbon
sequestration,
and
that's
probably
the
biggest
thing
I
hope
we
can
accomplish
in
the
short
run,
it's
great
for
soil
enrichment.
It's
also
great
for
energy
production,
you
there's
a
syn
gas,
synthetic
gas
that
comes
off
the
process,
and
that
is
basically
methane.

So
what's
the
magic
of
high
quality
biochar?
First
of
all,
it's
carbon
negative
or
it's
it's
energy,
negative
ions.
What
that
means
is
it's
not
a
dormant
piece
of
carbon,
think
of
it
as
a
magnet.
It
draws
stuff
in
it
draws
in
water.
It
draws
in
nutrients,
it
draws
in
bacteria
the
fungus
and
it
acts
like
a
sponge
and
it's
slowly
releases.

So
when
you
use
biochar
and
agricultural
purposes
a
lot
of
times,
we
have
leaching
you
put
the
fertilizer
on
today
you
put
too
much
on
and
then
the
rain
comes
and
then
some
of
it
washes
down
the
drain.
Biochar
locks
it
in.
So,
if
you
put
biochar
on
that
same
field
today,
it
will
literally
absorb
that
excess
fertilizer,
it'll,
lock
it
in
so
through
time.
You
don't
need
to
use
as
much
fertilizer
next
year
as
you
did
this
year,
so
it's
got
some
magical
properties.

You
can
put
it
in
water
and
they
did
this
up
in
four
columns
where
they
had
a
development
with
a
catchment
pond
and
it
used
to
be
a
a
farm,
and
so
it
had
lots
of
nitrogen
and
phosphates
cows
go
to
the
bathroom
in
the
field.
So
this
beautiful
development
had
this
smelly
pond,
so
they
took
bikes
at
biochar,
threw
it
into
the
pond.

We
floated
for
a
day
or
two.
Then
it
went
down
the
water
quit
smelling.
So
then
they
take
the
charge.
That's
activated
biochar
now,
because
you
have
nutrients
inside
of
it.
They
take
that
and
put
it
on
the
golf
course
and
then
you
put
fresh
biles,
it's
just
a
simple
example
of
of
the
chemistry
of
what
goes
on
with
this
stuff,
trying
to
be
efficient
with
my
time
here
when
you
use
it
with
soils,
all
soils
are
not
created
equal.

The
best
soils
to
use
it
on
are
Sandy
soils
and
low
PH,
that's
not
to
say
it's
worthless
on
other
soils,
but
for
the
dramatic
results.
If
you
had
a
desert
plot
of
soil,
that
was
Sandy
and
and
low
PH
biotar
would
burn
that
around
very
quickly
because
it
just
does
so
much
to
root
that
soil.
So
so
it
depends
on
what
soil
you're
putting
it.
It
also
depends
on.

stock,
the
feeder
stock
that
you
made,
the
biochar
out,
you
can
make
biochar
out
of
a
sewage
sludge,
you
can
make
it
out
of
Walnut
rinds.
You
could
make
it
out
of
Sawgrass,
you

All
of
the
feeder
stock
affects
the
qualities
of
the
biochar.
So,
depending
on
your
application,
you
might
want
Walnut
shells
as
the
stock
versus
pine
wood
sure.

service
can

longer
burn
all
that

about

turn

will

a
forest
fire,
it's
going
to

faster,

carbon

into

of

hit
600
Degrees

stay
there
for
10
hours

they
have
vacuums.
If
there's
too
much
oxygen,
it
pulls
the
oxygen
out
of
the
Kiln

need
a
little

it's

smolder

That
would
happen
at
your
campfire,
but
in
their
process.
It's

controlled
that
they
know
this
much
wood
equals

much
biochar
