Description

When you add a modern page to a site, you can add and customize web parts, which are the building blocks of your page. Use the Text web part to add paragraphs to your page. Formatting options like styles, bullets, indentations, highlighting, and links are available. You can also paste images in line with text.

In this video we'll focus to showcase the latest features around the text and image editing experiences during the SharePoint page creation and modification.

Feature showcase uh video series: I guess that's one way of saying: what are we doing in these videos, but uh here with me, uh is Sarah comments. uh Sorry is the beam in ODSP experiences team Sarah? Can you do a quick intro? What is your responsibilities? Yeah.

People that's working on making your authoring experience a little bit better, um so we've done a lot of exciting work in the last two years. That I've been here um made a lot of progress with the product and I'm so excited to show you some things today.

Excellent and and in this video we're going to focus on Rich Text Editor improvements, so you you actually told that to me as an RTE, which is an internal yeah.

Because of course, internally in Microsoft they're using a lot of abbreviations, but we need to be super clear. What is that? What is a rich text editor? Why would why would it matter how it's working sure.

B

uh So rich text editors are what you use when you type at the most basic level. So when you are making a page- and you are typing up any content- and you see options like to italicize and bold and add links all of that is being brought to you by our Rich Text Editor.

um So it's it's something so basic and fundamental, but it's really something that should be invisible when you're a user, it just works. You expect it to work. You know how it's going to work, it just works, um and so we've been making some changes recently to make that experience uh even better.

One of the things which I need to call out, what's which I noticed by myself, is that in the Tweet text, editing as I said as it's text, I can paste in images directly, which is like. Oh, my God I.

Because in the past it wasn't possible. Is that the one of the new things? So that's am I feeling the beans yeah.

So Instagram images is definitely something that we've been working on. uh It was a really really requested feature graph. We have our um image web part, but for a lot of people myself included, nothing makes more sense than just copying and pasting. That's what you're used to you're used to putting a photo in a word. Talk like that. um So that's now a capability that we have brought as well.

Let's have a look on that and in practice, so I can't wait to see this.

Let me share my screen so here I have.

It has to show how the Rich Text Editor changes, work, we're going to go ahead and create a new page.

B

So skip that just do blank okay, so right now, I've created a really basic page and in this first section I have something that says. Add your text here. um This is our text web part which is powered by our Rich Text Editor.

So if I click into this I see a number of options right um that you would expect and some that are maybe new and what we've done is we've grouped them by categories so starting you have your fonts and your font sizes, and then we have your highlight colors, which we've now switched so that you can actually see these Dynamic menus and select colors based on your theme or standard colors, and then we have other things: you'd expect like bold, italic um and so on and so forth.

um So I'm just going to put a bit of text in here so that we can see how this stuff works. So, if I go to the font, color menu I can choose from my SharePoint theme: font colors, it's subtle, but it's there and I can go and I can highlight it and anything I want. Now. That's a horrible combination, design wise, but you can see how the tools are working, um and so the coolest thing about this change that we made is you can see.

This is taking up the entire distance of your RTE and it does this regardless. So if I go in and I edit, my section and I switch this from being one column to being two columns and now I click in here the toolbar still is filling up this entire length.

um The functionality we had originally was basically that no matter how much space you had horizontally, we only included tools up to about here, um and that was really confusing for folks, because they're like I, have so much more room. Why aren't you using it.

We put in some changes to make it more Dynamic so that you can see as much space as you have available to you and then the rest of your tools. If you click your ellipses here um are in order down here. So previously you had to go to more options.

Oh sorry, it was already open and I closed.

It yeah you had to.

B

Go to this pain here to get things like font, color highlight color um and these more advanced options, but now they're all on your canvas for you.

So here I'll show another example. So here I am changing it again and I go in here and you can see it's still the length of my Rich Text Editor.

That's really really cool. Now I I need to push the demo, even though we didn't agree this. Can we can. We show a copying an image without uh I'm, so excited that we can easily manage the images so, first of all, if we, if we embed an image, we can always upload an image from the tool right in the read text: editor, if you do the three dots and and there's even the options of doing uh the the free images. What are those calls clip? Art images? What are they called.

Exactly no I the stock images stock.

Images. Thank you. Thank you. Yeah.

So I so I'll I guess I can show that so the old way that you would insert an image is, you would go to this and get the image web part and you would pull an image so I'm just going to go to stock images and we're going to pick these people with the cake um right in front of the camera is my bird. Her name is Juliana.

um She likes to sit right in the lights, um but here I've gone ahead and I've added a stock image using the image web part. But now, with our recent RTE changes, you can also add an image just by pasting. It so I've. Ironically enough, pulled a picture of Joanna and I've pasted it right here.

um So I get some of the functionality that I have down here. I can add a caption, um but it is important to note that if you want the full image capabilities that we have, you do currently have to use. Our web part version that we are working on bringing more of those to the inline images as well.

Cool, that's really really cool, then beautiful. Looking bird as well so awesome. Thank you now, Sarah I need to ask still that any any teasers. You talked about already about the image additional image capabilities coming one way or another for the inline images as well any other things. What we're planning to do with the richest editors, our site.

Sure um so I guess another teaser I can give is we are just updating this whole thing? um We are improving. It.

Everything's Gonna Change everything's gonna. No, it's.

B

Just no, no no everything's not going to change, but everything will be a little bit better. um So we are going through a tool update actually to bring other capabilities to the editor. um So that'll bring a lot of new functionality. That I am sure that I can't talk about, but I am sure will be very exciting and useful.

um So you're, just gonna have to trust me on that one um and, as far as image stuff goes, uh yeah we're looking to make investments there as well. So there's a lot of exciting stuff coming and I wish. I could say more.

Yep, that's actually a good way of saying it without saying anything: details, you're, learning to Microsoft ways of being a PM. This is really good so, but now um on the on the on the on the chasing of the tooling and everything else, just to call out data as well.

A

That's a natural thing as we are in the cloud so so we're basically we're not changing the tooling just because we're changing the tooling we're changing the tooling, because we want to provide additional value, additional capabilities, additional opportunities um which Yes again a bit of a change management challenge. But it's natural thing in the cloud you get more for free in these particular cases. So.

B

Yeah, so with our with our tool update, um your experience is going to look probably about 99 the same you're just gonna get some extra bonus, magic stuff, um which will be very exciting.

I'm I'm I'm thrilled on waiting on on what that magic will be so really cool. Thank you. Thank you, Sarah for this uh quick video recording and uh we'll catch you in the show on other topics and definitely in the future as well.
