Weiwu Zhang, Co-Founder & CTO at Smart Token Lab, joined us at #EDCON2023 and shared his insights into the unique value of tokens from an integrated web. Weiwu says today’s web thrives on integration with most of the web pages today usually having 3 integrations, including login (like Google ID), payment (like Google Pay or Paypal), and social network (like Twitter), which are provided by today’s Internet leaders like Facebook, Apple, and Google. He believes today’s web has big challenges beyond centralization, such as users must rebuild their reputation on an e-commerce website due to a lack of integration between websites. Integration has stunted the growth of Web2.
Weiwu believes that the solution is to tokenize the functionalities of the websites and the digital rights of the users, which means tokenizing everything and making everything a token. This is not the token we typically talk about (like collectibles or ERC-20). It’s the smart token where tokens can serve as integration points for the websites to be fully integrated. He explains that an email account can be a token, social media posts can be a token, diplomas & credentials can be a token, etc. When everything is a token, limitless integration is possible. He emphasizes that a connecting layer or smart layer that sits between blockchain and websites is needed to connect blockchain and integration points and allow token code to execute within web2 and web3 environments. In addition, smart tokens enabled by Smart Layer will serve as the connecting rod between AI and the Web. Weiwu believes that smart tokens can power the next generation of AI. SmartLayer is comprised of Smart Tokens, powered by TokenScript, running on a distributed network, and SmartLayer use cases are supported by AlphaWallet, which is a TokenScript compatible agent. You can learn more about AlphaWallet and how it enables advanced SmartLayer use cases via Weiwu’s presentation at EDCON 2023!

In this episode, Mike Townsend sits down with Victor Zhang, the CEO and founder of AlchemyNFT, an attestation and remixing protocol for NFTs. One of its first iterations is AutographNFT.io, a platform where anyone can request a verified autograph, authenticated via Twitter profile. The technology that makes this happen is TokenScript, which transforms NFTs by adding utility so that anyone can remix, combine or otherwise iterate NFTs. Investors include Mark Cuban, Crypto.com Capital, Framework Ventures and Mechanism.

https://archive.devcon.org/archive/watch/5/how-do-we-make-dapps-as-secure-as-the-underlying-ethereum
Web3.js is a Javascript API for web applications (dapps) to access Ethereum blockchain. However, its security assumption inherited the security assumption of an Ethereum node, which is entirely open to the node's owner. The privacy and security consequences of that assumption are two-fold.
First, a web application can learn sensitive information about the user.
Second, the web application can feign a representation of blockchain data to be another or even tricking users to signing obfuscate transactions. A website which simply draws a crypto kitty would look no different than another which reads the user’s kitty from Ethereum smart contracts.
Much makeshift work has been down for this underdesigned infrastructure. For example, MetaMask resorted to hardcoding CryptoKitty and requesting permission to read the user's address. However, only so much patches could do. Furthermore, such patches weren’t designed with abstraction to accommodate next-generation blockchains with privacy and efficiency improvements. For example, failing to find truth quickly using the low-level interfaces provided by web3.js, many dapp browsers resorted to relying on a centralised token status database.
The speaker presents a design which abstracts token interface away from low-level Eth-node interface, remodels the basic web code trust inheritance for practicality and security. It involves high-level API for web applications and a secure, WebAssembly based sandbox running signed code designed to embed in the Web itself.
