10 Feb 2022

Presented by: Jacob Stein and Madeline Holden
The holidays can be times of joy and connection; they can also bring stress and challenging emotions. During the first half of the presentation, Mr. Stein will discuss the importance of self-care for our students during the pandemic. He will share what school counselors are seeing among students (elementary through college), such as deteriorating mental and physical health, behavioral concerns, and social isolation.

During the second half, the Ms. Holden will stress the importance of self-care for the entire family, during the holiday season and throughout the year. She will offer practical suggestions for coping skills, self-care strategies, and even how to create a self-care plan.

Arlington Public Library, Arlington Dept. of Human Services and the National Alliance on Mental Illness present a panel discussion on Mental Wellness from A-Z. Recorded at the Arlington Public Library on May 30, 2019.

Join us for this panel discussion and conversation about mental wellness, from promotion and prevention to treatment and recovery. Hear from individuals with lived experience talking openly about what it’s like to have a mental health condition. Learn from advocates and clinicians about local resources, therapies, and treatments available for children, adults, and seniors. Receive the tools needed to expand our understanding of behavioral wellness and the opportunities needed for optimal health and well being.

Mental Wellness is essential to everyone's overall health and well being. Our community's mental wellness is not a question; it is our priority.

Representatives from the Department of Human Services' Prevention Services, Children and Family Behavioral Health, Adult Behavioral Health, Senior Adult Mental Health, Regional Older Adult Facilities Mental Health Support Team (RAFT), and the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) participate in a panel discussion and conversation about mental wellness, from promotion and prevention to treatment and recovery. Hear from individuals with lived experience talking openly about what it's like to have a mental health condition. Learn from advocates and clinicians about local resources, therapies, and treatments available for children, adults, and seniors. Receive the tools needed to expand our understanding of behavioral wellness and the opportunities needed for optimal health and well being.

One in five Americans live with a mental health condition. Navigating life with a mental health condition can be isolating, and finding a roadmap to recovery can be formidable. Too often, the stigma associated with mental health issues creates barriers, preventing people from getting needed support. Together we can change attitudes, assumptions, and ideas about individuals living with mental health conditions by providing the information and social connections so that no one has to suffer a mental health condition alone.

The Behavioral Healthcare Division, Arlington County and Arlington Peers Helping Peers in Recovery present Arlington's Celebrate Recovery event at the Shirlington Busboys & Poets, recorded Sept. 26 2018.

National Recovery Month (Recovery Month) is a national observance held every September to educate Americans that substance use treatment and mental health services can enable those with a mental and/or substance use disorder to live a healthy and rewarding life. Recovery Month celebrates the gains made by those in recovery, just as we celebrate health improvements made by those who are managing other health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, asthma, and heart disease. The observance reinforces the positive message that behavioral health is essential to overall health, prevention works, treatment is effective, and people can and do recover.

This year’s National Recovery Month theme highlights the value of investing in home health, purpose, and community and invites individuals in recovery to share their personal stories and successes in order to encourage others. It aims to in-crease awareness and foster public understanding and acceptance of the benefits of prevention, treatment and recovery from behavioral health conditions.

Follow volunteers and staff as they head out on a freezing January night to count people in Arlington County who are experiencing homelessness.

This annual event is part of a national Point In Time count that helps communities establish the dimensions of the problem of homelessness and help policymakers and program administrators track progress toward the goal of ending homelessness.

For more information go to publicassistance.arlingtonva.us/10yp/

Arlington’s 10 Year Plan to End Homelessness was launched in 2008 with a consortium of more than 100 stakeholders from public, private and faith-based community organizations. The plan’s primary goal is that no individual or family shall lack access to decent, affordable housing.

The 10 Year Plan committees work in concert to ensure that available federal, state and local resources are used strategically to meet the needs of Arlington homeless households and those at risk of becoming homeless.

13 Nov 2017

An Arlington County Commonwealth Coordinated Care Plus (CCC+) Town Hall Meeting will be held at Central Library Auditorium on Monday, November 13 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

What is Commonwealth Coordinated Care Plus?

Commonwealth Coordinated Care Plus is a new statewide Medicaid managed long term services and supports program that will serve approximately 214,000 individuals with complex care needs, through an integrated delivery model, across the full continuum of care. Enrollment into CCC Plus is required for qualifying populations. Care management is at the heart of the CCC Plus high-touch, person-centered program design. CCC Plus focuses on improving quality, access and efficiency.

Who Should Attend?

This program is intended for Medicaid members, caregivers, families and advocates, as well as anyone else seeking a better understanding of the provision of Medicaid benefits.

About the Event

The event will consist of a presentation by the Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS), and all six of the Managed Care Organizations (MCOs) that are participating in this new Medicaid Managed Care initiative which begins in Northern Virginia on December 1, 2017.

Katie Hill and Lynne Vest of the DMAS CCC+ Outreach team will begin the presentation with an overview of the entire program, it’s background and implementation, followed by descriptions of each of the six MCO health plans:

Aetna Better Health of Virginia
Anthem HealthKeepers Plus
Magellan Complete Care of Virginia
Optima Health
United Healthcare
Virginia Premier Health Plan
Outreach team members from the health plans will then make a brief presentation on their plan.

The presentations will be followed by a question and answer session where plan beneficiaries, their care partners and family members will have the opportunity to ask both DMAS and each of the plan providers questions about how this new managed care coverage will be implemented so that they may decide for themselves which of the six available plans will best meet their needs.

Who Will Participate in Commonwealth Coordinated Care Plus?

CCC Plus includes Medicaid members who:

Receive Medicare benefits and full Medicaid benefits (dual eligible), including members enrolled in Commonwealth Coordinated Care (CCC).
Receive Medicaid long term services and supports (LTSS) in a facility or through one of the home and community-based (HCBS) waivers, except Alzheimer’s Assisted Living waiver. Individuals enrolled in the Community Living, the Family and Individual Support, and Building Independence waivers, known as the Developmental Disabilities (DD) waivers, will enroll for their non-waiver services only. At this time, their DD waiver services will continue to be covered through Medicaid fee-for-service.
Are eligible in the Aged, Blind, and Disabled (ABD) Medicaid coverage groups, including ABD individuals currently enrolled in the Medallion 3.0 program.

Do you know a volunteer? Do you volunteer? What if I told you that 32% of Arlingtonians volunteer each year? Over 10,000 volunteers donate over 500,000 hours of service to the County Government each year. Yes, 500,000 hours. You can accomplish a lot in that time, like...
*Provide canine companions to help over 1,000 children improve their reading skills.
*Educate over 2,000 residents about emergency preparedness.
*Mark storm drains on 81 miles of Arlington streets.
*Lead over 13,500 hours of summer camp activities.
*Respond to over 18,000 hours of fire and medical emergencies
*Deliver and distribute books to over 400 homebound and disabled residents.
*Provide over 700 hours of counseling and service to Arlington entrepreneurs.
*Survey 51 unsheltered homeless adults to identify permanent housing and service needs.
*Maintain 21 ART bus stops.
*Teach U.S. history and civics to 126 adults in preparation for the U.S. citizenship exam.

In all, the time that volunteers contribute is worth over $10 million each year to County Government programs and our community.

We want to thank you for all you have done...for the time you've shared, the expertise you contributed, and for your compassion. Join us on June 3rd, 6:00 -- 7:30 pm at Arlington Mill Community Center to celebrate the difference you have made in our community. After years of development and community input, the new Arlington Mill Community Center has opened its doors on Columbia Pike. This building, a beacon in the community, will provide something for everyone, of every age and every culture. As Columbia Pike continues to grow, this community center will help to foster a main-street environment and a stronger sense of community.

Some of the key features and programs of the new community center include:

• Combining high quality, multi-purpose community center and affordable housing on the Pike. In one of the county's most ethnically and economically diverse areas, Arlington Mill will provide a wide range of courses, classes, recreational and sports opportunities to the community. The center will offer something for everyone, from pre-K to seniors.
• The county board's long-term effort to transform the Pike into a more transit-oriented, walkable, bikeable street that provides high-quality transportation options, ground floor retail, and great public spaces for residents, while preserving the stock of affordable housing and encouraging small business.
• The project came in on budget, and plans to serve a large portion of the population on a consistent basis. Services from DHS and DPR will be served out of this facility and the center has been built to grow along with the community and their needs.

To learn more about Arlington Mill Community Center, hours of operation, and all of the programs offered, visit the county webpage at arlingtonva.us and search Arlington Mill.

Members of Arlington's Teen Network Board joined with volunteers from Rebuilding Together to make much-need repairs to Borromeo Housing's home for teen mothers. For 25 years, The mission of Borromeo Housing, Inc. (BHI) is to empower young single mothers to create a self-sustaining future through education, counseling and support, while they reside in our safe home. BHI closely monitors the infants of our young mothers to ensure the children are parented responsibly, receive appropriate medical care, and meet individual developmental benchmarks. In this way, BHI is determined to present two generations of at-risk youth with alternatives to the perils of neglect, poor education, and inter-generational poverty.

The Teen Network Board is comprised of youths form Arlington High Schools, that engage community outreach and promote the teen voice in Arlington. They participate in numerous events each year ranging from Alcohol prevention to helping with organizations like Rebuilding Together in order to help out within their community.

Bipolar disorder is usually first exhibited in people in their late teens and early 20s. Peter De Haven was diagnosed at the age of 11 in 1984, when bipolar disorder in children was almost unheard of, and rarely diagnosed. Finding the right medication was a constant struggle for Peter and his Mother. Refusing to take his meds led to suicide attempts and eventually, prison. In this story we see how it is possible for those labeled mentally ill to function in a society that too often fails them. Peter was lucky to find a place in Arlington VA that could give him the right tools to bring him 'back to wellness'.
