Enjoy these quick challenges that you can do at home to entertain yourself this summer (or any time!) when you are not reading books. Brought to you by the Children’s Librarians of Buncombe County.
It is so important to keep your brain AND your body active! These challenges will help you do just that.

• Blind Drawing: You need at least two people for this - one person describes a picture that they are looking at while the other person (or people) draw what they hear. Once finished, compare the images to see the differences and similarities!
Materials:
- A picture to describe (we found simple drawings online),
- Paper to draw on and a pencil/pen/marker for each of the artists that are drawing

• Yank Me Around: Stack plastic cups into a tower with a sheet of cardstock in between each cup. Adjust the number of cups depending on the level of difficulty that you desire – 2? 3? 5?! Quickly and carefully yank out each piece of cardstock so that the cups fall and nest into a single stack. If you knock the tower over, you must start over!

Materials:
-Several plastic cups (Solo cups work well)
-Sheets of cardstock to stack in between (we cut each full piece of cardstock into four quarters)

Miss Whitley is here to teach you how you make some delicious treats!

Ingredients needed:
-Balsamic vinegar
-Strawberries
-Pound cake/angel’s food cake
-Heavy whipping cream OR full fat coconut milk
-Sugar

1. Chill cream/coconut milk overnight, as well as a mason jar or glass bowl and whisk
2. Top and slice berries.
3. Mix with balsamic vinegar (not enough to cover, but about halfway) and some sugar (I’d say about a tablespoon to a tablespoon and a half)
4. Let stand for a couple of hours or overnight.
5. Pour cream or milk in mason jar or bowl with sugar to taste. SHAKE or WHISK!

Pour berries over cake, top with whipped cream!

Ingredients needed:
¼ cup creamy peanut butter
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 to 2 garlic cloves
1/8 teaspoon grated ginger
1/3 cup hot water


1. Peel fresh ginger with a spoon, grate into bowl
2. Peel and mince garlic cloves, toss into bowl.
3. Add in soy sauce and peanut butter
4. Pour in hot water
5. Whisk!

Let stand for a minute before serving as a dipping sauce, or pour directly over cooked noodles.

2. Core out the seeds.

Watermelon pizza:

1 seedless watermelon, cut into 4 1 inch thick rounds
2 cups ricotta cheese
1 8 ounce block cream cheese, room temperature
¼ cup honey (can use maple or agave, up to you!)
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 cups mixed berries (or one berry, either way!)
½ cup sweetened coconut flakes, toasted

Spread out coconut flakes on a microwave-safe plate. Try to keep them in one even layer. Microwave in 30 second intervals for 1 ½ to 2 minutes until golden. Let cool.

In a large bowl, mix ricotta, cream cheese, honey, and vanilla until smooth.

Spread all over watermelon rounds, top with coconut and berries. Enjoy!
