Adam Spiers (one of Toucan’s co-founders) propose to co-lead a workshop with conference participants to find alignment on a baseline carbon token standard.

There are many types of carbon credits which can be used in many different contexts, so most likely it is unrealistic to converge on a single token standard. However, if standardization is completely absent, then interoperability and composability become difficult or even impossible. DeFi has already shown the enormous power of composability in harnessing network effects, therefore it’s crucial that we seek to grow the ReFi space in the same way. Through this lens, standardization of carbon tokens is critical to the success of the ReFi movement.

We will build on the work of the Carbon Token Working Group, led by Adam, and Toucan’s experience designing and operating the TCO2 token standard.

Blockchain technology can have great benefits; However, for Latin America it can be a watershed by having the combination of new forms of financial inclusion and the use of natural resources that it has. For example, large green regions could contribute their lands for regeneration and compensation of the carbon footprint and thus establish an ecosystem where everyone benefits.

-- Can we make climate action cool and fun?

- Can we leverage the invisible hand and make private interests move communities and ecosystems to decarbonise public goods?

- Can we make any blockchain green and prove it?

- Can competition accelerate climate action?

- Can centralizing transparency increase visibility of decentralized climate efforts?

- Can the Crypto ecosystem prove it’s a force for good and show the way to other industries, regulators and the rest of the world about how to accelerate decarbonization?

- Blocks.garden (which will be unveiled in September-Oct 2022) will answer these questions and more, and will pave the way to #MakeCryptoGreen for real.

The last large tract of forest surviving in the highly threatened southeastern Amazon would not exist but for the determination of the Kayapo and Panara Indigenous people and their alliances with conservation and indigenous rights NGOs. Conservation and development investment over the past 20 years has empowered the Kayapo and Panara to secure the integrity of 10 million hectares (25 million acres) of their ratified indigenous territory. In Brazil, which holds 60% of the Amazon rainforest, the threats are intensifying.

This project has remained innovative in adopting new models such as indigenous led defense programs, to web3 strategies.

The Paris Agreement marked a fundamental change from previously centralized systems to bottom-up and decentralized approaches. At the same time, our society is transitioning from analog to digital solutions to improve global coordination. This workshop will discuss the possible implications of these transitions and the potential role of emerging technologies. More specifically, we’ll discuss how emerging technologies, such as the internet of things, artificial intelligence, and blockchain, can improve digital monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) procedures to improve data transparency and eliminate information asymmetry in climate market accounting.

For this, in my talk, I will explore the following dimensions:
1. Outline a global “climate data internet”;
2. Discuss the present landscape of climate accounting systems and the current process of climate asset development;
3. Speak about the role of emerging technologies and new paradigms such as regenerative finance (ReFi).

Crypto is seen as something that's mostly to do ponzi schemes or launder money at this point to the majority of people in the mainstream. I believe there ways to go about changing that narrative in a real way that we all need to take part in through active means to help web3 truly become ubiquitous.

Bringing info on “Offsetting carbon emissions” in Colombia and Latam countries. Reduction of emissions from deforestation and degradation. When, how and why to mitigate and reduce greenhouse gases that are released into the atmosphere. Also commenting on region-real problems, for example, one of the cases in which these emissions occur is when it is that a tree burns - but in Colombia, many communities have as their only source of income in this activity, which, in addition to deforestation, leads to the degradation of ecosystems.

How this contributes to local communities: Additional revenue from carbon credits closer to the ground could uplift the communities the projects originate from, hitting more than just the E (Environmental) in ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) and how their involvement through transparency hits the G (Governance)

Talk about regulations right now: Colombia is one of the countries that has advanced the most in its regulations of carbon markets, in the development of climate mitigation projects and has a mandatory market created in addition to the voluntary market.

As the digital economy advances, data centers have become necessities, the core infrastructure that makes modern-day living possible. Per Moore’s Law, large data centers are known to consume more energy as data transmission increases. However, at the same time, the world is threatened by climate change, and data centers are accelerating the deterioration of our environment.

Through careful investigation of peer review journals and efforts to control global warming worldwide, the MESON team hereby proposed Data Center Carbon Credit(DCCC) as a medium to support data center carbon trading. The MESON network can better utilize the stock of idle resources and coordinate bandwidth resources across borders, regions, and projects through token incentives. It also encourages the construction of mega data centers. Meson is an effective platform that empowers global data centers to meet the development of modern technology and the needs of energy conservation and emission reduction.

Those who emit carbon should pay a price for that carbon - especially high emitters. Carbon pricing policy is one of the most powerful tools for reducing emissions, and Carbon Credits facilitate that?

What if we expanded carbon credits into all different vectors of Impact? Instead of just paying to reduce carbon, Impact Certificates could help increase open source funding, journalism funding, or help fund the removal of people from poverty. In this talk, I will outline the progress that the Gitcoin/Protocol Labs/Raid Guid teams have made in creating a market for Impact Certificates.

There are a lot of new players entering the space, and many of them are quickly disappointed by un-transparent markets and the chaos of the overall information. Many arrive to the conclusion that they should create their own registry while doing a carbon project. After all their friends have bought their credits, they quickly discover that they are struggling to find buyers to their credits.
We want to tell everybody why it's a bad idea to start your own registry and how can we improve the space at scale. We want to help to kickstart as many projects as possible, make it easy for them to set it up, focus on the important and find funding for their project.

Blockchain can create incentives for collective action (especially in relation to climate change). Economic incentives can be engineered around solving problems that are not profitable to solve like climate change. By building incentivization structures in unique ways, we can tackle some of the problems in the world that require collective action. Ethereum, after all, was built around a shared vision - a variation of libertarianism that wants most things run by communities and people.

This is a continuation of the keynote at ETHBarcelona on Ecological Assets in DeFi, focused on how we can build a massive, distributed movement in climate finance by building liquidity and price discovery of ecological asset markets. I'll get into the pieces we have today in the market, and what needs to be built to usher in a real regenerative finance movement this decade, so we can take the learnings of climate impact of the last 20+ years and massively scale them.

Deforestation is the main driver of forest loss, accounting for 27 % of the total. The world is packed with funds allocated to fix this humanitarian crisis, but the results are not there yet. One key reason for this is the high cost that Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification, which is needed for these projects, represent on local communities trying to reverse the impact caused by humans on our nature. This represents an issue of trust between the different parties involved. Now, we can do near real-time monitoring of protected areas to reflect the positive impact of donations to these projects. We believe that by bringing trust to the equation, we can help unlock more resources to help fund these initiatives to rebuild ecosystems faster.

Using multi-modal environmental data from field-based, satellite-based, drone-based, and genomic monitoring, our AI algorithms can examine tree cover or tree loss in an area. Later, the smart-contract channels the donations to projects that positively impact nature and issue an NFTree with our Proof-of-Care concept. This NFT will dynamically show the latest data recollected from the site (tree cover/loss, carbon predictions, wildlife camera footage, drone and satellite imagery, and more).

Society has been built upon structures and principles that encourage consumerism, individualism, competition, separation and exclusion. We're all playing the money game, competing for the highest score where we get the most points when we build for ourselves, and the least when we build for the collective.

With this system, public goods creation is undervalued and dependent on sacrifice, but web3 offers us an opportunity for change. We can create new economic games where individuals get the highest scores when they add value to their communities. We can redefine a future where our collective needs are matched with abundant public goods in a new, regenerative world.

This is an introduction to the different narratives and faces that I came to know while having several meetings with ReFi community builders and event organizers from all over the world. From suited men talking fast while trying to buy tickets for an important trip in the USA, to small farmers in Brazil organizing themselves to extract more value from their products while keeping the prices accessible to their neighbors, to young tech entrepreneurs from South Korea and Kenya.

With the talk, I want to provide a landscape vision of the ReFi ecosystem from its different perspectives. Also, the talk will follow the work that I've been doing writing a book about ReFi together with Professor Leonardo Lima from Ledger Labs, from the Pontifical Catholic University in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Traditionally, the primary consumers of verified carbon credits have been large corporations purchasing offsets via brokers to offset residual emissions and fulfill their net-zero commitments. However, this source of demand can only take the market so far.

In particular, the batched nature of corporate net-zero purchases creates an imbalanced market structure in the traditional carbon markets, where there are constantly "sell" offers but only sporadic "buy" bids. Hence, price discovery in traditional carbon markets is extremely limited, as buyers typically show up once or twice a year, so they are force to pay whatever price their broker offers them.

To alleviate this imbalance in the ecosystem, KlimaDAO is cultivating additional sources of demand, especially recurring demand that creates small but consistent activity spread evenly around the calendar year.

Beyond absorbing credits into its own treasury via bonding, the Klima Infinity program has active partnerships across several verticals focused on bringing in new participants into the carbon markets. Many of these new participants retirement activities are not necessarily driven by 1:1 net-zero offsetting, but rather by a commitment to climate-positive action

Some examples:

- Live events committing to reduce single use plastics, adopt a sustainable swag strategy, as well as offsetting in excess of calculated emissions (like SBS!!!)

- Working with SushiSwap to integrate a "green fee" into their transaction flow, the first of many DeFi protocols we are partnering with to integrate retirement as part of their fee structure

- Lens Protocol retirement Collect Modules empower content creators on Lens to redirect their Collect fees toward retiring carbon credits

- Consumer goods companies integrating perpetual carbon offsetting into the purchase of their products: e.g. jewelry company that stakes KLIMA on behalf of each unit purchased and perpetually uses a portion of the rebases to retire carbon credits
