Keeping Kubernetes Secrets secret can be a challenge for many applications. The standard mechanism only obfuscates the data in the Secret, which means it's accessible to anyone with the right permissions. How do we fix this?

HashiCorp's Vault offers the ability to securely store and access sensitive data that's needed by applications. This week we're joined by Rosemary Wang, developer advocate for HashiCorp, to discuss Secret management and explore how Vault can help secure your sensitive data.

Deploying a cluster is only the first step to being ready to deploy production workloads. What other things should you configure, prepare for, and educate your users on before putting the cluster into production?

This week we'll evaluate some considerations for "production readiness" and share some perspectives based on our experience, along with what we've seen others doing.

We'd love to hear from you too! Don't hesitate to share your process of preparing for production with us during the live stream.

OpenShift 4.12 added MachineSet functionality for control plane nodes on some infrastructure types. But, what does that mean? What benefit do they provide? Today we'll take a look and explore this new feature to see how it makes things like recovery from failure easier than ever before.

Infra nodes, which host core services for OpenShift, are not configured "out of the box", but provide an important - and valuable - capability: isolating those services on nodes that don't require entitlements. We'll demo how to configure infra nodes and how to assign workload to them.

It seems like a good idea, right? Take the etcd backup from one cluster and restore it to a different cluster. Presto, the old cluster is back!

But, is it? Will that actually work?

OpenShift's installation options continue to grow, with more and more flexibility based on the type of platform you're installing to and the environment your cluster will be running in.

The agent based installer is one example of this, providing an experience to facilitate rapidly getting the first cluster up and running in your environment so that you can establish a foothold and begin expanding.

This week we're looking at two features of OpenShift 4.12, the Security Profile Operator and RHCOS Layering.

The Security Profile Operator enables administrators to control SELinux and seccomp profiles for their OpenShift nodes. This provides for fine grained controls over the restrictions placed on both the node(s) and the containers running on them.

RHCOS layering, a tech preview feature, provides a way to customize the RHCOS image used for the nodes. This means that administrators can install packages, such as hotfixes from Red Hat, to their nodes without having to wait for an OpenShift update to release.

Join us this week to learn more about each of these features and see them in action!

2022 was a busy year for many reasons, and 2023 is looking to build upon that. During this stream Jonny and Andrew will reflect on what's happened in 2022, how it's impacting OpenShift and Kubernetes today, and some things to look forward to in 2023.

And, maybe, some things we aren't looking forward to in 2023 : )

OpenShift Virtualization is a feature of OpenShift, when deployed on bare metal servers, to host virtual machines alongside containers in the same cluster. They can connect to the SDN, consume PVCs, and do many of the other things that Pods do - but also have VM behavior like live migration.

Ian Pilcher joins us this week to show some capabilities of OpenShift Virtualization and how it might fit into your application modernization strategy.

This week we discuss differences between a "vanilla" Kubernetes and OpenShift, including the install experience, what's available out of the box, API differences, convenience features, and more. If you're curious about "why OpenShift", or maybe want to know what changes with OpenShift when moving away from (or to) another Kubernetes, then this stream will be useful for you!

Join Andrew Sullivan and Jonathan Rickard Wednesdays at 11 a.m. ET for a full hour explicitly designed to help OpenShift admins. Each episode addresses your questions and covers the different tools that containers need to run in a cloud-native environment.

In 2021 Red Hat and Nutanix announced a joint partnership to provide support for Red Hat’s portfolio of products on Nutanix’s portfolio of hyperconverged offerings. Among other things, this meant that OpenShift was, and continues to be, fully supported when deploying to Nutanix’s AHV. With the release of OpenShift 4.11, full-stack automated installation, a.k.a. IPI, is fully enabled and supported when using the Nutanix platform as well!

During this stream we’re joined by Andy Daniel, Principal Product Manager for Nutanix, to discuss the road to OpenShift on Nutanix AHV, show a demo of the install process, and explore further integration between the two platforms.

Architecting, deploying, and supporting infrastructure - and the applications deployed on top - are jobs commonly associated with system administrators for the last 40+ years. As applications have become more complex and scalable, and the amount of work needed to maintain and support the infrastructure and platforms those applications are built on has increased, we've had to evolve skillsets to continue to be effective. In the last decade or so, the merging of application/developer and administrator/operations roles has often been referred to as DevOps, where we - the administrators - often become a part of the AppDev teams.

However, even more recently a new skillset, and moniker, has become popular: Site Reliability Engineering, or SRE. This role is a full merging of the two skill sets, but rather than bringing operations knowledge and skills to AppDev teams, SRE brings a software engineering approach to operations.

Today's episode we are joined by Hilliary Lipsig, SRE and co-host of the GitOps Guide to the Galaxy, to discuss the different approaches and skills for SRE compared to traditional administrators. We'll be diving into how that applies to OpenShift and especially how the SRE role applies to managing a large number of OpenShift clusters with a relatively small number of personnel.

Virtual machines have been a part of OpenShift since version 4.5, when OpenShift Virtualization was released as a fully supported feature for all entitlements. As OpenShift Virtualization has matured it has become more and more integrated with other features of OpenShift, such as Pipelines, Service Mesh, GitOps, and more.

This stream we’re joined by Chandler Wilkerson from the OpenShift integration team, to look at how we can use VM-based application components hosted in OpenShift in a more container-like way. Not all applications can be containerized, but that doesn’t mean we can’t use, consume, and manage them as if they are!

Many organizations find it difficult either to expand OpenShift or demonstrate business value from it. Today we will discuss ways to make integrating with other teams smoother. Whether this is as simple as having conversations to ask relevant questions about the developer and application teams’ requirements, or learning how to measure costs associated with OpenShift to prove value to the leadership, having conversations and supporting our peers in the dev and application roles is critically important to success as an administrator.

This week we’re joined by Christina Kyriakidou, author of the recent “As an OpenShift Administrator, what questions should you ask your developers” blog post, to talk about the technical and non-technical tasks and conversations administrators can take on to grow their presence in the company and show the value of OpenShift.

Losing a control plane node is no fun and can be a shock for OpenShift administrators who then need to figure out next steps to recover the cluster. Fortunately, with OpenShift, there is a way to recover your control plane and minimize degraded cluster operations!

Did you know that Red Hat has plans to remove Grafana as a dashboard for OpenShift metrics? So at some time in the future Grafana will be removed by default, but you can still deploy your own instance and configure it to use the system Prometheus as a data source.

During this stream, we’ll demo how to recover from a lost control plane node and work with custom Grafana dashboards for the node exporter and more!

Do you need declarative node network configuration driven through Kubernetes API? No matter how you run your OpenShift environment, network management is one of those things that's hard to get right. In this episode, we look at the NMState and MetalLB operators which provide load-balancer implementation for bare metal Kubernetes clusters and a Kubernetes API for performing state-driven network configuration across the OpenShift Container Platform cluster's nodes. We'll cover using MetalLB L3/BGP mode and how the NMState Operator provides users with the functionality to configure various network interface types, DNS, and routing on cluster nodes and look at how the daemons on the cluster nodes periodically report on the state of each node's network interfaces to the API server. So join us to learn more about MetalLB L3/BGP and the NMState library.

What is an edge validated pattern, and how can it simplify your deployment experience? Of course, edge computing takes more than just the right platform. But with so many options, it can be a puzzle to assemble the tech stack that’s uniquely right for you - that’s where validated patterns can help.

This episode looks at Red Hat Edge’s validated patterns and some of the detailed deployments created for different edge use cases. These pre-defined edge computing configurations can simplify the deployment experience, use automation to create a lifecycle that ensures they continue to work as new versions of the dependent products are released, and help you stand up your edge architecture faster. So please bring your questions and join us to learn more about edge computing and Red Hat validated patterns.

How do you backup OpenShift-hosted applications? What do you need to backup? Red Hat Principal Architect Annette Clewett joins us to discuss data protection and disaster recovery with Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management (ACM) and OpenShift Data Foundation (ODF) because even with the best of luck and planning, everyone needs backup and recovery mechanisms.

What is ODF? Red Hat OpenShift Data Foundation is a software-defined, container-native storage solution integrated with OpenShifts. When used with ACM, ODF provides a disaster recovery capability for OpenShift Data Platform (ODP) to failover an application from one OpenShift cluster to another and then, when ready, failback to the original primary cluster. We'll also take a look at Ramen, an open-cluster-management (OCM) placement extension that provides recovery and relocation services for workloads. So join us to learn more about data protection and disaster recovery for OpenShift with ODF and ACM.

What happens in an OpenShift update vs. an upgrade? Changes with Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform can happen regularly, so we deploy a new version, which can be a bit scary because no one wants to push changes to an environment that might break stuff. This week on Ask an OpenShift Admin, we answer questions about when and what happens in an update vs an upgrade, pets vs cattle clusters and why we still need upgrade paths, the process of upgrading between minor versions, and we'll look at how you can visualize Red Hat's recommended updates with the Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform Update Graph. So join us to take a look at when and how OpenShift upgrades are necessary and some best practices for getting ready for those updates.

We all need to create clusters that are never meant for production to test a theory, learn about a feature, or validate a config, but what's the "best" way to do that? If you're new to OpenShift and containers, it's worth checking out options that let you stand up a non-production cluster fast and allow you to test and learn the system before diving into your production environment. Red Hat OpenShift has several options to help you stand up a non-prod cluster without a ton of work. If you want to know how to quickly create a non-production test cluster, don't miss this episode to find out about the quickest path to testing and learning OpenShift clusters.

What are OpenShift sandboxed containers, and how are they more secure than "regular" containers? This week, Product Manager Adel Zaalouk joins to help us look at the use cases and benefits of OpenShift sandboxed containers and how they compare to OpenShift Virtualization. We'll cover some history with Kata containers, how Sandbox containers rely on a hypervisor to provide kernel-level isolation and demo a sandboxed container to find out what's happening at the host/hypervisor level that may be interesting. Join us to learn more about sandboxed containers and get answers to your OpenShift questions.

Using a LoadBalancer Service with on-premises deployments can be challenging, often relying on external and third-party vendors to create integrations for their specific hardware. With OpenShift 4.9, Red Hat added MetalLB, in L2 mode, as a fully supported option for adding LoadBalancer Services to your cluster. In this week's episode, we'll look in-depth at MetalLB, including the use cases, what types of workloads are appropriate, and the inner workings.

As a follow-up to last week’s deep dive, we’ll also look at how you can deploy OpenShift to AWS GovCloud regions. These special region types are different than normal, so tune in to discover and learn about some of the pain points, pitfalls, and limitations.

What is a disconnected OpenShift installation and why would you need one? In this episode, we take a deep dive into disconnected and look at deploying a disconnected OpenShift cluster. Disconnected installations of OpenShift Container Platform occur when the OpenShift cluster is not connected to the Internet, but there are a few other differences that come into play as well. We'll discuss mirror images, disconnected Operators, and learn whether a cluster actually needs to be disconnected to install disconnected. We'll also examine ImageContentSourcePolicy and how to reconnect a detached cluster. Please join to learn more and ask us anything about disconnected OpenShift.

Did you know you can customize the OpenShift web console? In today's stream, Senior Principal Software Sam Padgett and Senior Principal Product Manager Ali Mobrem join to help us inspect the OpenShift web console, looking at all the features and functions within. We'll also look at web console extensions, where you can customize the web console by running a script and loading custom stylesheets when the console loads. Extension scripts allow you to override the default behavior of the web console and customize it for your needs. So why would anyone want to use the web console and run custom extension scripts? What value does it offer? Maybe you want to change the colors of your OpenShift console from red to chartreuse? Or possibly disable certain features or preferences? Or even use it as a backend for a different deployment tool. We'll answer all of your questions, as well as any more you may have, so please join us as we dive into the OpenShift web console.

Are your Operators ready for the release of Kubernetes 1.22? It's a good idea to double-check because several APIs that have previously been marked as deprecated will be removed and are no longer available in 1.22. To help us cover this change Rob Szumski, Senior Manager, Openshift Product Management, joins us to discuss the details and ensure we avoid removed API versions. We'll also look at the steps needed to upgrade to newer APIs because Operators projects using these APIs versions will not work on Kubernetes 1.22 or any cluster vendor using Kubernetes version 1.22, such as OpenShift 4.9+.

Red Hat OpenShift can run and manage both Linux and Windows containers from one platform, so you're able to move Windows containers to OpenShift without needing to completely re-architect or write new code. And this week, Christian Hernandez, Technical Marketing Manager for Red Hat Cloud Platforms Business Unit, joins the live stream to cover the ins and outs of bringing your own Windows nodes to OpenShift. We'll look at configuring a cluster with hybrid Open Virtual Networking (OVN) Kubernetes networking and using the Red Hat Windows Machine Config Operator (WMCO) to install and manage Windows nodes. Curious about the advantages of running Windows containers in OpenShift? As a developer, this means that you have one platform for Linux and Windows-based application components, and as an administrator, the consolidation of infrastructure (hopefully!) makes life simpler. Bring your questions and join us to learn more about Windows Container Support for Red Hat OpenShift.

We’ll also be celebrating the one-year anniversary of Ask and OpenShift Admin, so join the live stream and celebrate with us!

You've probably heard about the growth of edge computing, but what is edge? And what does it mean- especially for OpenShift admins? By moving workloads to the edge of the network, devices spend less time on the cloud, react faster to local changes, and operate more reliably. But with the opportunities that edge computing brings, some complexities need to be considered as you build out an infrastructure to support these use cases.

So in this episode, let's talk about what it's like to work with OpenShift at the edge. That means things like running nodes at remote sites, single-node OpenShift instances, and compact clusters. We'll also take a look at management tools and philosophies. Red Hat Principal Technical Marketing Manager Mark Schmitt will join the stream to help explore how the edge is a very different place from the data center and gives us a unique perspective on OpenShift at the edge.

What's the best way to install, manage and upgrade Operators and their dependencies in a cluster? Operator Lifecycle Manager (OLM) is a core component of OpenShift. OLM is the Kubernetes feature/function that enables the deployment, management, and lifecycle management of all the Operators that make up OpenShift itself and the Operator-managed applications deployed.

In this stream, we'll take an in-depth look at the components of OLM and how they work together to manage everything from cluster deployment and upgrades to on-demand databases and services. So join us to explore OLM and learn why it's the best way to manage Operator collections.

Security and compliance are two hot topics when it comes to container-based applications. In this episode, we take a look at why that is and what it means to you as well as how Red Hat OpenShift can help make your software more reliable and secure. We'll cover why you need to start with trusted base images when building your containers and delve into how the compliance Operator, in conjunction with the file integrity Operator, lets OpenShift Container Platform admins describe the desired compliance state of a cluster and provides them with an overview of gaps and ways to remediate them.

In addition, we’ll also discuss the intrinsic features of Red Hat CoreOS, like FIPS mode, to help bring security both to the platform and applications. This is going to be an information packed stream, be sure to join us and prepare your hardest questions for our special guest SMEs!

What’s your Recovery Time Objective and Recovery Point Objective? Do you have a disaster recovery plan for both OpenShift and the applications? Not sure what they are or how they're related? Let’s talk about what RPO and RTO are, their similarities and differences, and why you need to analyze your application priority to balance between resources and application availability.

In our last episode, we discussed high availability for OpenShift. Now we get to the big question: what happens if things go wrong? We’ll discuss disaster recovery scenarios and strategies, including some suggestions on what is, or isn’t, important to protect and recover.

Most people think of Kubernetes and OpenShift as hosting “cloud native” applications, where cloud native refers to a system that expects failure and can compensate automatically, for example, using horizontal scaling. But does that apply to the infrastructure hosting OpenShift? What about OpenShift itself?

In this episode we’ll look at high availability for OpenShift, including what it expects from the infrastructure, what it’s capable of providing for applications, and some example scenarios.

There are several different methods to deploy OpenShift to your hyperscaler, hypervisor, or hardware platform of choice. One of the easiest is with the Assisted Installer, which provides an interactive experience where you are able to see, modify, and configure the cluster options then boot the nodes to an ISO and let the install run. No generating ignition configs. No attaching or hosting them. Just boot an ISO and you’re ready to go!

This stream we’ll explore the OpenShift Assisted Installer, including how it takes some extra steps to test and validate the target machines, and learn more about what the future holds.

In previous episodes we’ve brushed up against the topic of authentication and authorization, but today we’re going to go in-depth and answer your questions about how the mechanisms work and how to customize them for your organization.

Have you ever wondered how LDAP groups are synced? How do you determine what verbs need to be allowed for a ClusterRole or Role? Are there benefits to using one authentication method over another? Bring all your questions about managing permissions in OpenShift, we’re here to answer them!

How do you know if something bad is happening in your cluster? How do you know that a node is down, an application isn’t responding, or the storage backing a PVC has “disappeared”? If your answer to any of those is “when the users tell us there’s an error”, then it may be time to reevaluate your monitoring and alerting strategy.

Fortunately, OpenShift has built-in tools for doing just this. With only a small amount of work you can ensure that you’re receiving the proper alerts and warnings so that you can, hopefully, avoid any sticky situations. Join us as we focus on Alertmanager, how to configure it and how to customize the settings to avoid both too many alerts and not enough.

Deploying OpenShift on vSphere, Azure, or AWS? We want to introduce you to SPLAT, the team that works hard to deliver OpenShift anywhere and everywhere. This week, we welcome SPLAT team members to talk about their role in the development and support of OpenShift. We’ll also talk about the vSphere Problem Detector, a SPLAT-created Operator which, as the name implies, checks for, identifies, and sometimes rectifies known problems with OpenShift on vSphere clusters.

Who is the SPLAT team?
OpenShift supports many different infrastructure types - AWS, Azure, vSphere, RHV, bare metal, etc. - and each one has different capabilities, features, and quirks. The OpenShift Specialist PLATform team is a group of specialists who focus on each of the infrastructure providers with a deep understanding of both.

This episode we welcome Mark Russell, product manager for Red Hat Enterprise Linux CoreOS, to talk about why and how RHCOS is different, along with discussing some configuration options for manageability, performance, and resiliency.

Once an application is deployed, we don’t think about the operating system much - unless it breaks. This is even more true for containerized applications, whether they’re deployed to a single host using Podman or across a Kubernetes cluster. But even though the operating system is mostly ignored by the application team, it plays an important role for administrators and can dramatically affect our experience.

OpenShift 4 introduced a significant shift in how Red Hat deploys and manages the operating system underpinning everything else in OpenShift, changing from Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), and sometimes RHEL Atomic, to Red Hat Enterprise Linux CoreOS.

So join us as we talk with Mark about OpenShift and why CoreOS is different from other Linux distributions. If you have questions, be sure to leave a comment or add them to the chat!

Continuing our closer look at Day 2 Operations, in part two of two, we'll review the network and storage configuration tasks to be done after the cluster is deployed. No matter how well and thoroughly the cluster is configured for the application workload, if the application administrators, developers, and users can't access those resources, it's all meaningless. We'll also spend some time looking at how to configure authentication and authorization controls for your clusters.

Congrats! You just installed your OpenShift cluster. Now what? “Day 2” operations refer to everything that happens after the cluster is installed, which could be a lot or a little, depending on how you plan to use the cluster. But what are some specific Day 2 operations? This show, part one of two, will focus on some additional machine, node, and cluster-level configuration, which you may want to implement after deploying.

DNS forms the backbone of service discovery, both internally and externally, with OpenShift. Did you know OpenShift has separate DNS for Pods and nodes? This episode we’re joined by Christian Hernandez, DNS expert and Technical Marketing Manager for OpenShift, to talk about how DNS is used and configured for both Pods and nodes in the cluster. We’ll also discuss external DNS requirements for connecting to applications hosted by OpenShift.

The heart of the Kubernetes control plane in Red Hat OpenShift is etcd, a key/value store used to persist configuration, status and requested state for everything happening in the cluster. Slow etcd means a slow control plane and slow API, which ripples out to every aspect of OpenShift and your applications. In this episode, we dig into etcd, focusing on performance requirements, protecting the data, and periodic maintenance, so don’t miss this one!

Resources are precious. You don't want to waste them and you don't want Pods to over indulge, so how do we control access to resources? Kubernetes has built-in functionality that allows the application to declare their requirements and, conversely, enable administrators to define their limits. This episode we'll explore the aspects of requests, limits, quotas, LimitRanges, and QoS classes, including how all of these are affected during resource contention.
