Can you produce source code for your open source based software container? If you're doing open source containers and don't stay mindful of GPL, you're doing it wrong. In today's episode, we'll discuss why developers should care about the source of their images and present a general overview of GPL requirements to help you understand basic licensing considerations when developing container images. We'll also look at the history of open source and GPL, what it looks like when working with containers and walkthrough pulling down a source container for UBI. So join us to learn more about GPL and examine why the provenance of your container image is important.

Let's deploy a single node Red Hat OpenShift cluster. In OpenShift 4.9, support for a single node cluster was added and in this episode, Bradd Weidenbenner, Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management Product Manager, joins to help us look at this new deployment pattern. We'll cover use cases and why you would need a single node OpenShift cluster, show you how to install it using the Assisted Installer from the OpenShift customer portal, and then walk through an overview of this new single node topology. What's the benefit of single node OpenShift? Single node OpenShift offers both control and worker node capabilities in a single server and provides users with a consistent experience across the sites where OpenShift is deployed, regardless of the size of the deployment.

How do you containerize an application? What exactly is "containerization," and why should you care? Join us for this episode for an introductory discussion of Containerization- which is the process of encapsulating an application with its operating system environment and making it capable of running and deploying in containers which provides a foundation for gradually improving the application's design to make it more "cloud-friendly," but it may also introduce new challenges. So join us to learn more about when you should consider this approach and some of the benefits.

How can we maintain trust in the cloud and ensure we are building secure systems? Red Hat's Lucy Kerner, Michael Peters, and Lily Sturmann join this episode to discuss Keylime, the CNCF hosted project that provides a highly scalable remote boot attestation and runtime integrity measurement system. Keylime enables users to monitor remote nodes using a hardware-based cryptographic root of trust. Keylime originated out of the security research team in MIT's Lincoln Laboratory, and we will cover the background and goals behind the project. We will also delve into how we can ensure we don't sacrifice security while adopting new technology.

The Konveyor community is working on projects to help users rehost, replatform, and refactor their applications to Kubernetes. Crane is a Konveyor project focused on application portability and migrations of container workloads across clusters. Downstream, the product is known as Migration Toolkit for Containers (MTC). It is an operator based solution that consists of Kubernetes native APIs, as well as a guided UI based experience. With several large scale production migrations under our belt, we’ve incorporated many lessons learned back into the project. We’ll be talking about how the current generation of MTC helps users migrate their workloads between clusters and the importance of application portability in the context of hybrid cloud environments. Finally, we’ll talk about the direction of our next generation of tools and the problems we’re trying to solve in the future.

A lot of terms get thrown around when it comes to IT security, and sometimes it's hard to keep it all straight. So in this episode, let's go through the various security buzzwords and jargon you've likely come across as developers. We'll explain any basics you may have been missing during the last episode, and some of the deeper topics we'll cover will be: authentication, authorization, attestation, DevSecOps, SPIFFE, SPIRE and anything else you can think of. So if anything in that sentence was a new term to you, buckle up because we'll cover it in this talk. Oh, and let's not forget TLS, which is *not* SSL, but everyone thinks it is.

What does shifting security to the left mean for developers and individual contributors? Join us for a two-part live discussion around DevSecOps! In the first part of a conversation from In the Clouds, Kirsten Newcomer joins the Level Up hour to discuss the importance of a bottom-up approach to security. We often hear about shift left and DevSecOps in conversations about organizational culture and implementing new processes and policies, but it's important not to overlook what you can do to prevent security issues before deployment and how you can help encourage leadership to participate in a more secure software development lifecycle.

What does the "Health Index" of a container in the Container Catalog really mean? Should I only use things with "A" ratings? How stale are the ratings? In this episode, Red Hat Principal Product Manager Brian Cook joins the show to discuss the Red Hat Container Health Index, how it helps identify security risks with Linux containers, and what it means for your containers. Tune in to delve into what we should be looking for when choosing container images!

Let's talk about how rootless containers work. Both Podman and Red Hat OpenShift default to using rootless containers. This can cause problems when scouring the internet for inputs and we often end up with "root required" containers. But why can’t you use any container image that works on normal Podman in rootless mode? Why do the exact UIDs and GIDs in use matter? Join this episode to learn more about Podman and subordinate user IDs.

For reals this time, let's experiment with docker-compose using a podman backend. Since we didn't actually get to this back in episode 30 let’s get back into Docker Compose support in the latest Podman release. We’ll see if we can launch our Cool Store using the Compose-like features. We'll also experiment with exporting the compose pods and try to run them in OpenShift.

It's been a few weeks, but we're back and ready to dig into the news we heard at Kubecon and Red Hat Summit. Many announcements revolved around lowering the barrier to entry for Kubernetes. At Kubecon we heard more about Kubernetes as the Control Plane for the Hybrid Cloud with Clayton Coleman's keynote, there were interesting sessions on CronJob API and a ton of talks on Helm. Red Hat Summit 2021 had many OpenShift announcements around API management, Apache Kafka and Red Hat OpenShift Data Science. We also had GitOps Con and Kubernetes on Edge Day. If you missed any of the sessions, now is your chance to catch up. Join us to discuss all the things and what everything could mean for the open source community at large.
