27 Jun 2023

A presentation hosted by the Hyperledger Climate Action and Accounting Special Interest Group on June 27, 2023 featuring Naresh, Co-founder and COO of Snapper Future Tech, speaking about using blockchain to manage waste management & green financing.

Mismanagement of waste is a critical issue that leads to the unfortunate death of more than half a million people every year. In a circular economy, Producers/Brand owners have a crucial role to play in collecting back waste or post-consumer products and being compliant.

However, the lack of trust and traceability is a significant challenge due to inaccurate and unreliable data, non-compliances, and the largely informal sector of waste processing. Snapper is solving this problem by accounting and tracking recycled waste using a unique blockchain-powered solution.

29 Nov 2022

A discussion at the Hyperledger Climate Action and Accounting Special Interest Group on November 29, 2022 about group member's experience at the COP27 climate conference. At COP27, it became clear, now more than ever, that solving for climate change will require global stakeholders to work from the same numbers to measure and decrease emissions together. It is also clear that Open Source and Distributed Ledger Technology need to be a part of the discussion to find the technology mix needed to address this challenge. On Tuesday the CA2SIG has invited representatives from OS-Climate, Nova.org, Recycle.go, the Green Web Foundation, Kumo.earth, and Carbonibank to share Key thoughts / findings from the COP27 experience, areas of Opportunity for DLT, Open Source Solutions to tackle the climate challenge, and opportunities worth exploring.

If you're interested in how distributed ledgers can be used to address climate change, feel free to join the Hyperledger Climate Action and Accounting Special Interest Group.

A presentation at the Hyperledger Climate Action and Accounting Special Interest Group on March 8, 2022 featuring Martin Wainstein from the Open Earth Foundation, Nancy Norris from the Government of British Colombia and Kyle Robinson from Briartech Consulting.

This presentation and session at the CA2SIG will deep dive into an implementation of Hyperledger Indy and Aries, under the Trust Over IP Framework, using Decentralized Identifiers and Verifiable Credentials to establish trusted interactions between multiple agents and climate stakeholders. Particularly we'll review the network where subnational governments (like British Columbia), Natural Resource Corporations (like Mining Companies), Auditors and Verifiers, and other agents across a supply chain integrate carbon and climate data for both jurisdictional and corporate inventories, as well as corresponding carbon adjustments when products cross borders.

The Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation (EMLI) from the British Columbia government has been collaborating with the Open Earth Foundation and their Open Climate network and platform to pilot a Digital Trust Network that is relevant to Mining operations and broader Paris-level integrated accounting. Both entities presented their work at COP26 in Glasgow in collaboration with UNFCCC and will walkthrough current status and next steps.

The Hyperledger Climate Action and Accounting Special Interest Group is an open group and you're welcome to get involved if you're interested in how blockchain is being used in this space. Find out about how to get involved at: https://wiki.hyperledger.org/display/CASIG/

13 Jul 2021

A presentation of the Hyperledger Climate Action and Acccounting Special Interest Group on July 13, 2021 featuring a presentation from CircularTree about Real Product Carbon Footprint to Achieve Decarbonization.

Many companies have set themselves targets by when they want to be carbon neutral. However, this does not mean that their products are carbon neutral. A study by the Carbon Disclosure Project has revealed that on average, 80% of the product carbon footprint comes through the supply chain.

The solution of CircularTree helps companies to measure their real carbon footprint. With blockchain technology, the biggest challenges can be overcome and ambiguity between trade partners is removed. Companies can get accurate, granular, and verified primary emissions data of their purchased materials and products. This transparency enables companies to provide real product carbon footprint information to their customers.

Gunther will explain how their solution is designed, provide some insights in their award winning pilot project with Porsche, BASF and Motherson and our strategy to achieve mass adoption of our approach.

15 Jun 2021

A recording of the Hyperledger Climate Action and Accounting Special Interest Group meeting on June 15, 2021 featuring Veronica Garcia-Heller, Founder and CEO of Bitlumens and Kamlesh Nagware, CTO of Snapper Future Tech. Bitlumens facilitates the scaling of renewable technologies using a last generation smart meter and the blockchain. We do this by working with PV mini grids in rural areas with intermittent or no access to electricity. Our main market is India because the digitalization of the energy sector is happening fast and is being backed by the government. This provides a good test ground for the application of carbon budgeting and trading. Our platform combines Internet of Things (IoT) and the blockchain, where we provide security, verification and traceability of data. Through survey and IoT data we provide a credit score and a carbon credit to each household. These calculations are stored on chain to be accessed by permissioned stakeholders. We believe that the involvement of stakeholders in carbon reduction from the very beginning of a project fosters investment flows towards renewable generation in rural communities.

26 Jan 2021

A guest presentation by Tom Baumann and Henry Kim at the Hyperledger Climate Action and Accounting Special Interest Group on January 26, 2021.

Climate action accounting, often referred to as measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) has many challenges that digital solutions can help resolve. Although blockchain in combination with IoT and other digital technologies can help to address climate data track and trace in support of climate finance and resources to support climate actions (e.g. climate-smart agriculture), there remains the basic challenge that MRV standards, and the MRV standards system itself, is fragmented and archaic. This not only a climate issue but is a major problem of “greenwashing” claims. Therefore, digital solutions also need to be leveraged to support a nextgen MRV standards system to (1) improve the interoperability and cohesiveness of the MRV standards and outputs, as well as (2) expedite a qualitity-controlled process of converting (existing and new) plain language MRV standards into MRV “smart standards” (similar to smart contracts), for example via semantic web ontologies and XBRL frameworks to bridge MRV standards with DLT-enabled solutions.

The mission of the Carbon Accounting and Certification Working Group is to identify how blockchain or distributed ledger technologies (DLT's) could improve corporate or personal carbon accounting; make carbon accounting and certifications more open, transparent, and credible; and build collaboration between consumers, businesses, investors, and offset developers across industries and national boundaries.

People in the group are building a set of open source tools for an “operating system for climate action” in their blockchain-carbon-accounting lab. The code is being developed as an open source project and you're invited to get involved with what the group is building. Learn more about how to get involved at:
