With Dan Freedman, Dean of the School of Science and
Engineeringhttps://www.newpaltz.edu/ocm/admins/daniel-freedman/
NoVo Foundation - https://novofoundation.org/ - with the effort of Martin Kirk - is supporting the Kingston, NY, Fabrication Center - for hands-on builds and digital fabrication - beyond the Fab Lab. The Fabrication Center will be in operation by next year. Dan Freedman is consulting on building out the Fabrication Center.
We covered high temperature 3D printing, open source equipment, hydrogen energy - and distributing the enterprise ecosystem of open source manufacturing. It's getting close to this breakthrough, but there is a little work ahead. Here you hear some insights on the challenges and OSE's approach..

OSE distributes enterprise. Ken Makunga is starting a 3D Printer enterprise in Indonesia with OSE's 3D printer. Listen to our discussion that shows where the 3D Printer, CEB Press, and Tractor fit in the greater picture of the Seed Home 2 project to solve for housing. https://wiki.opensourceecology.org/wiki/Seed_Eco-Home_Interest_List
See our block production cost projections - where we have already shown proof of concept of stabilized block production, but we don't have good data on stabilized block production until we build the soil mixer to handle the soil preparation part. History is happening. Lesego Tshepe is OSE's first one year immersion program student. The goal is to start OSE operations as a formally recognized chapter in Rustenburg, South Africa - the land of Ubuntu. In the next year, OSE will get hands-on training to build OSE machines and begin production in South Africa. For example, there is nobody producing 3D printers in South Africa, so there is a great opportunity.
The immersion provides the personal coaching through OSE's collaborative development skill set and mind-set - to be applied to open source hardware and enterprise of all kinds. History is in the making in that our enterprise is open for replication - so that startups don't have to continue reinventing the wheel as they get going. When Lesego succeeds, that will set a precedent for many to follow.
We started this mentoring program because OSE work requires the full time effort on the part of a large number of developers - in order for our transformative goals to become realized. Our aim is to transition people to working with OSE full time. We focus in the creation of collaborating chapters - so that the effort remains highly-coordinated, but distributed. If you are interested in starting a chapter in your country or location - see our Crash Course - https://wiki.opensourceecology.org/wiki/OSE_Crash_Course - and contact us to see if you are a good fit for the program.

Introducing Extreme U projects. What if we were to build the first, practical, open source, solar hydrogen car?
https://wiki.opensourceecology.org/wiki/Extreme_University_Projects
This is going all the way into open production toolchains that include open source electric motors and hydrogen engines.
If you are at a university and woyld like to start Team OSE at your school as a chapter of OSE - then sign up at https://wiki.opensourceecology.org/wiki/Extreme_U

Working with Lesego on bill of materials for the OSE 3D Printers to determine feasibility of producing 3D printers locally in South Africa. Sourcing of parts is a prerequisite for an enterprise that revolves around 3D pritning, education, and production - the usual OSE package.
There are several considerations for BOMs in different countries:
1. First, price must make it feasible to replicate what is doable in the USA to within 50% of cost off the shelf.
2. If the price is not within 50% overrun, then this may be a no-go.
3. To get price to comparable to the USA cost, there must be design changes, part substitutions, or further ability to produce additional parts in house. This is doable once the full open source microfactory is avvailable, but in the meantime, we must work with existing supply chains.
4. For parts - sticker price is only one half the story. What is the shipping cost, for example for Ebay or Amazon or Aliexpress?
5. To substitute parts - what machinery is required to build parts in-house?
6. OSE Chapters can fill a role of developing the part substitution, so that more parts are produced in house. This is one part that will be pursued through the immersion training program: if some parts are too expensive, we develop the tools to produce those parts. This is a way to make this feasible throughout the world: by leapfrogging on the supply chains.
Chapters mark the evolution to full time engagement with OSE work. Read more information on OSE Chapters at https://wiki.opensourceecology.org/wiki/OSE_Chapters_Proposal/
