A Standardized Approach to Creating Digital Tokens - Paul DiMarzio, Enterprise Ethereum Alliance; Marley Gray, Microsoft & Jonathan Levi, HACERA

Tokens are simply representations of things of real value. Although many physical tokens have been replaced by digital representations, such as the airline boarding pass on your smartphone, these digital representations are only that – representations. The true value of digital tokens comes with the ability to encode behaviors and rules directly into the tokens in order to greatly simplify, unify, and streamline their use. Hundreds of thousands of such tokens already exist on a variety of platforms.

Unfortunately there is no common language for defining the properties, behaviors, and control messages associated with tokens. Without a common means of defining and triggering token behavior, it is hard for anyone without a technical background – such as a business specialist or regulator – to truly understand the purpose of a token. And it is nearly impossible to write contracts that exchange tokens of different types produced by different development teams. This lack of standardization is stifling the advancement of digital tokens in the industry.

The Token Taxonomy Initiative is a member-led organization formed to develop a modular, industry-neutral, and technology-neutral Token Taxonomy Framework (TTF) that will set the standard for tokenizing anything of value. The TTF is being designed by a diverse set of individuals with both business and technical expertise based on their own real-world projects and requirements, and it will drive business-level interoperability between tokens by aligning the underlying technical interoperability across different networks and platforms.

In this session, the speakers will lay out the value of digital tokens and dive into a few examples of how the TTF can be used to simplify the design and implementation of new token classes.

ACTION-EHR: Patient-Centric Blockchain-Based Healthcare Data Management for Cancer Care - Alevtina Dubovitskaya, HSLU (Lucerne University of Applied Sciences)

Due to the privacy and high sensitivity of Electronic Health Records (EHR) and the lack of systematic infrastructure support, most EHR data sharing still happens through fax or mails, which can incur major and possibly critical delays of patient care. Therefore, there is an impeding need for a patient-centric system that will facilitate secure and trustable management of EHR data originated from multiple hospitals, which is often the case, in particular, for patients with chronic diseases and serious medical conditions such as cancer.

Researchers from the universities in US and Switzerland, and in collaboration with medical doctors from University Hospital in US, employed Hyperledger Fabric to build ACTION-EHR - a prototype of patient-centric blockchain-based EHR data management system. A Web application is developed for patients and doctors for initiating EHR sharing transactions. A hybrid data management approach was chosen. The system ensures patient privacy protection and security guarantees with respect to the requirements to the healthcare data management, including the access control policy specified by the patients.

Alevtina will present a demo of the prototype that has been tested in a distributed environment at Stony Brook University and demonstrated the feasibility of applying Hyperledger Fabric to address various inefficiencies of health care-related processes, by enabling better traceability, transparency, and efficiency. She will also discuss major challenges of mass adoption of such system. In particular, she will focus on current capabilities of Hyperledger Fabric from technical, legal, and social perspectives when developing blockchain-based system in healthcare settings.

All Are Welcome Here: Creating an Inclusive Hyperledger Community - Swetha Repakula, IBM & Tracy Kuhrt, Accenture

The phrase “All Are Welcome Here” is a common message heard around Hyperledger events, meetings, and other community interactions. However, how does the community ensure and fulfill that promise?Hyperledger’s community is not a single entity and is comprised of many smaller groups that form around WGs, SIGs, and projects. With so many groups, meetings, mailing lists how can community leaders effectively create an inclusive and civil environment to cultivate a diverse community? This session will go through the best practices for conducting meetings, writing code reviews and enabling asynchronous collaboration to create an inclusive environment. Though focused on Hyperledger tools, these skills can apply broadly to any open source project.

Block to Basics – Hyperledger Key Management - Alex Rabke, Digital Asset Security, Unbound Tech

The foundation of any blockchain-based technology lies in the quality of the cryptography that underpins the ledger. More specifically, successful management of the blockchain private keys is critical to the success of any project using this technology. Typically, the private keys exist as a single point of failure for security and operational concerns. Join this session to learn the basics of traditional blockchain key management methods (including those implemented in Hyperledger-based architectures) and how they compare to more modern and sophisticated models such as those based on MPC (multi party computation). Session will include a live demo of key management interface for Hyperledger-based project workflow.

Blockchains are No Longer Monolithic Programs, but Composable Applications that Meet a Specific Need - James Barry & Bill Katsak, Taekion

Over the past year the meaning of a “Blockchain” has changed as many blockchains have become focused on solving a business problem and the original crypto currencies do not have the platform that meets an enterprise need. Hyperledger offers the best selection of parts that can then be selected to build an enterprise application. Why a “Blockchain” application does have to all be from a single entity like Ethereum or Bitcoin. James and Bill will show how Taekion is using multiple components including Hyperledger Sawtooth, Ursa, Transact, and new components they will be proposing to the Hyperledger community to build a new composable distributed application that showcases why a compassable app is the future in 2020 and beyond. This presentation will showcase why Hyperledger is the perfect community to find, build & use these components to build the new vision of a distributed blockchain.

Boring into Burrow - Silas Davis, Monax

Blockchains are too exciting. Burrow wants to be boring. Then we want to be simple. Then we want to be fast. The kind of boring that lets you sleep well at night. Burrow gives you just enough blockchain to build a strongly decentralised public permissioned network. Enough but no more.

Burrow is a fully-fledged blockchain and smart contract framework. That is, you ought to be able to service the same use cases as with Hyperledger Sawtooth, Fabric, and Besu.

Burrow aims to be simple, complete, opinionated, and lightweight. We want to be 'the Redis of blockchain.' Our guiding principles are:
1. Provide single pure Go binary running as a single process with (almost) everything included for deployment, testing, events, governance, token economics, and so on.
2. Support public permissioned networks as first-class citizens.
3. Prefer introspection and tight coupling of components over configurability.
4. Provide a single Byzantine Fault Tolerant (BFT) consensus algorithm, a single smart contract calling convention and ABI, and a single transaction family.
5. Provide a clean and simple developer experience that gets you closer to the metal.

Of course, a blockchain node is necessarily rather far from simple, and rather more exciting than we would like. But we want to be as pragmatic and concrete amongst our peers as we can whilst providing a complete substrate on which to build applications.

Boring into Burrow attendees will dig into the three faces of Burrow to include the Hyperledger bridge to the Tendermint/Cosmos ecosystem, Ethereum side-chain compatibility with support for advanced smart contract languages via WASM and experimental economic systems, and Burrow’s lightweight hackable EVM/Solidity execution library.

Brazilian Health Service and Blockchain - Diógenes Firmiano, mbamobi

Brazilian Health Service has more than 360.000 organisations including more than 8000 hospitals. There are more than 2000 electronic medical records systems involved and there is a need of interoperability between those systems. The National Health Data Network is a platform based on Hyperledger Fabric blockchain to manage Eletronic Health Records(EHR) in order to create, manage consent and permission to EHR. It involves more than 5 Billion records a year and blockchain is responsible to guarantee security, EHR and consent immutability, log tracking and distribution of timeline of EHRs between all brazilian states and private health networks. The Health Data Network uses FHIR as pattern to handle medical information and provides interoperability between all participants. With this network, all patients should consent pratictioners or organisations to show EHRs and can allow or deny any single record in the network. The patient's timeline is stored in blockchain and smart contracts can handle security and consent to the whole network in order to guarantee that constraints are followed by all nodes.

Building Secure Protocols Using Ursa - Mike Lodder, Sovrin Foundation & Brent Zundel, Evernym

It's notoriously difficult to properly implement blockchain protocols that use cryptographic algorithms. In this talk, Mike and Brent will explain some of the features in Hyperledger Ursa and how to use them to solve some of the most common problems faced by people looking to build private and secure protocols on blockchains.

They will start by explaining some of the cryptographic primitives in Ursa and what they do from a functional perspective. Then, they will illustrate how to use them through their own work in Indy and Aries. They will offer advice to others and other tricks on how to develop blockchains with specific security, privacy, and confidentiality requirements. This will include things like designing a security model, picking the right cryptographic tools, and then implementing the blockchain project in a way that minimizes bugs and security vulnerabilities during development.

Mike and Brent will also discuss some of the common mistakes that they have seen people make when using cryptographic algorithms and how to develop in a way that avoids these mistakes.

This talk is targeted at developers with some experience in working with cryptography or security-related code.It is not necessary to be an expert cryptographer or experienced security professional, but some basic knowledge of cryptographic protocols will be needed to get the most out of this talk.

Building Self-sovereign Identity in South Africa - Jakub Kočí & Patrik Staš, Absa

Absa, together with other banks and financial institutions within SAFBC (South Africa Financial Blockchain Consortium), is building a self-sovereign identity solution for people in South Africa. Our first goal is to reduce the costs of a repeating KYC process. We want to provide users an identity wallet as a mobile app, which they can use for verifying their identity. Then we will issue them a digital identity credential, which they can re-use for communication with Absa or other companies.

Our solution is built with Hyperledger Indy/Aries and we would love to share what we've done so far and what was our experience with these technologies. What went well, what wasn't so good and also what we're planning for the future.

Building the Pharmaceutical Supply Chain for 2023 - Ben Taylor, LedgerDomain

UCLA and LedgerDomain were accepted as part of the DSCSA Pilot Project Program, which was launched by the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) enhance the safety and security of the drug supply chain. The pharmaceutical supply chain relies on paperwork and manual transcription from one system of record to another. Many medicines go out in bulk and are divided until the dispenser counts the patient’s drug into an amber bottle. The challenge for the 21st century is to reduce suspect or illegitimate product while ensuring patient data security.

The pilot project focused on the enhanced requirements for package-level tracing and notification that go into effect in 2023 to comply with the Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA). It assessed system requirements for a successful implementation on a larger scale, including identifying, flagging, and preventing the distribution of suspect and illegitimate products.

At the heart of this effort was a last-mile mobile application that helps deliver lifesaving medications to babies at the famed Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. UCLA is one of the nation’s preeminent research and academic medical centers, currently ranked #7 best hospital in the US. UCLA Health dispenses across the spectrum of large medical centers as well as ~200 small clinical settings, with an annual spend over $250 million on commercial product.

During this talk, Ben Taylor will discuss the significance of blockchain to the pharmaceutical supply chain in the coming decade, and core outcomes from the FDA study. He will also discuss why Hyperledger is critical to enterprise-grade blockchain applications, and key challenges that the Hyperledger community faces in the areas of governance and orchestration.

Combining Chocolate and Peanut Butter at the Linux Foundation - Dan Middleton, Intel

Hyperledger and the Confidential Compute Consortium are two Linux Foundation projects providing unique enterprise computing models. At the intersection of these two projects is Avalon. Avalon makes the trusted execution capabilities of CCC usable in the distributed ledger frameworks provided by Hyperledger. Beyond deployment in HL frameworks Avalon also provides ease of composition in other B2B and distributed applications.

In this talk we will discuss how these open source efforts intersect and some of the impacts of that intersection emerging in cloud service provider capabilities. Technology leaders will benefit from learning about Avalon’s building blocks and lessons learned from some of the first commercial adoptions. Developers will learn about the application design model and cloud friendly container patterns for rapid prototyping. We will tie these topics and audiences together by walking through at least one end to end usage. This usage will demonstrate how to process confidential information between parties both attached to and disconnected from Fabric and Besu networks.

Connecting Ecosystems: Blockchain Interoperability - Hart Montgomery, Fujitsu Laboratories of America & Peter Somogyvari, Accenture

Following on last year's presentation, https://hgf18.sched.com/event/JKe4, Accenture will provide an update on their continued work around Blockchain Interoperability.

The solution defines a communication model to enable permissioned blockchain ecosystems to exchange any on-chain data or custom assets (fungible/non fungible) independent of the platform (e.g. Hyperledger Fabric, Quorum, etc.) without a middleman. This projectimplements an interoperability validator network, which is an overlay network of hand-picked actors that will validate and sign data before sharing. An “interoperability validator” overlay network is introduced for each of the interoperable blockchains. Interoperability validators are known or broadly discoverable by the ecosystem and are typically participants already taking part in the governance or consensus.

This project proposes an alternative to existing interoperability models, and it is designed specifically for permissioned blockchain networks.

An update on the project status willbe provided together with an overview on the roadmap and the planned future work. A live technical demo showcasing the protocol in action will be provided.

Creating Trust in Enterprise Blockchain Networks - Scott Seth Perry, Scott S. Perry CPA, PLLC

While blockchain technology creates strong cryptographic controls securing the integrity of data, successful, cooperative blockchain networks must establish trust between a variety of independent entities to create overall trust. In this presentation, Scott Perry will discuss how trust is created in block chain systems and the varying layers (i.e. ledger, agent, credential exchange and governance) that add trust within interoperable parties and reliance to external blockchains within the web of trust.

As an active member of the Sovrin Goverance Working Group and author of the first robust trust assurance model for blockchains, he will discuss how all blockchains networks can add accountability within stakeholder roles to ensure that blockchains are trustworthy above the embedded cryptographic trust assertions.

The target of this presentation is leaders and participants in industry, jurisdictional and public utility blockchains who are seeking greater acceptance and assurance in the trustworthiness of their network.

Cross-organizational Secure Data Exchange with Access Control using Blockchain - Qiong Zhang, Fujitsu Labs of America

With the ongoing digital transformation, there are large amounts of data being generated by individuals, IoT, and organizations. Due to security and privacy concerns, currently these data are siloed, even though there is a strong motivation to utilize data across organizations to obtain valuable data-driven insights. To enable such data utilization, we have developed a new system for secure data exchange between organizations in a consortium with access control using Blockchain. In this system, the data providers can register metadata along with access control policy associated with the actual data. This metadata and access control is recorded on the distributed ledger, while the actual data remains off-chain and stored locally. The data consumers can discover the different data available in the consortium based on the metadata. When a consumer requests for data, the system uses smart contract to verify against the data’s access control policy, and if allowed, seamlessly establishes secure overlay connection on the Internet to exchange data from the provider. We will present the system architecture implemented using Hyperledger Fabric, demonstrate its features and detail a recent use case of a consortium of multiple organizations, such as real estate, mobile operator, in Tokyo area to securely share data based on access control policy and gain insights for city planning. Also, to overcome limitations of the node scalability in Fabric, we have implemented a multi-cluster exchange system with metadata shared across clusters. Lastly, we will show how to extend this system to realize privacy-preserving decentralized machine learning by training local AI models with distributed on-premises data at each organization and combining these models to achieve better performance.

DIDs without Blockchains - Implementing Peer DIDs in an Hour or a Day - Daniel Hardman, Evernym

Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs) are like DNS without any registrars. They're a foundation of decentralized identity, and are relevant to most Hyperledger projects. They've been implemented on Hyperledger Indy as well as public blockchains like Bitcoin and Ethereum, and those implementations are important.

But just as the Lightning Network took Bitcoin transactions off-chain, and Plasma took smart contracts off-chain, we need a way to take DIDs off-chain. 99% of all the DIDs the world needs can be handled this way, with massive benefits for scale, performance, cost, and decreased complexity.

In this session, we'll explain how peer DIDs work, and show developers how they can get support for them in an hour or a day (depending on their circumstances).

Decentralized Control with IBM Blockchain Platform - Gari Singh, IBM

A core tenet of blockchain is decentralized control.Such control ensures Blockchain data and transactions can be trusted and not compromised by any single party.A traditional blockchain-as-a -service offering (where one vendor runs everything) undermines this basic tenet.Further, even running all of the nodes in the same cloud can undermine this tenet .Decentralized control is what our production customers want and what the market has demanded

With IBM Blockchain Platform, we introduced the concept of a "blockchain management platform" which provides an ideal offering where a vendor offloads the management and maintenance of the blockchain nodes but at the same time the owner(s) of the node(s) still retain full control of their nodes and cryptographic material .Come see Gari Singh demonstrate the latest on IBM Blockchain Platform that can run anywhere (on any cloud or on premise) and get advice on how to implement your blockchain applications using the latest capabilities in Hyperledger Fabric or IBM Blockchain Platform.

Demo: Fabric Private Chaincode - Bruno Vavala, Intel & Marcus Brandenburger, IBM Corp.

IBM and Intel demonstrate the privacy-enhanced capabilities that the Fabric Private Chaincode (FPC) project brings to Hyperledger Fabric, a popular blockchain framework for the enterprise. Such capabilities allow Fabric chaincode to maintain and work on encrypted data, thereby hiding any sensitive information from Fabric Peers and hosting organizations. This enables privacy-sensitive applications such as sealed auctions and analytics over medical data. The demo aims at familiarizing and engaging the audience with FPC as follows.

First, it argues that the Fabric framework can be seamlessly augmented with a privacy-enhancement feature through a sound and low-cost mechanism. In particular, it briefly overviews the functional and the security aspects of FPC chaincodes. The former describes how FPC chaincodes are executed on Fabric and how clients can interact with them. This will appear straightforward to Fabric users, since FPC does not modify Fabric’s programming model. The latter guides the audience through sensitive-information flows between clients and chaincodes (in the trusted execution environment), and between chaincodes and the ledger.

Second, the demo introduces a concrete system which implements FPC based on Intel SGX. It briefly overviews the FPC code base released in Hyperledger Labs, explaining how developers can integrate it with Fabric. Also, it demonstrates how the system can be used in simulation-mode on non-SGX-capable platform.

This allows a larger audience to immediately experiment with the code, while work is in progress to support additional platforms.

Third, the demo focuses on an application solving a real-world problem, which could not have been easily addressed by Fabric.

Design Patterns for Decentralized Protocols (Avoiding Blockchain Centralization) - Daniel Hardman, Evernym

"Decentralization" is a word we often hear in Hyperledger circles, and we may pat ourselves on the back on the assumption that if we're using blockchain, we must be decentralized. But blockchain can have its own centralization problems. In this talk, we'll explore some Gang-of-Four-style design patterns that are truly decentralized, that you can implement in your own solutions--and we'll also look at antipatterns where blockchain doesn't keep the architecture from centralizing. You'll come away with terminology, diagrams, and examples that will make your decentralization goals easier to achieve, and that will protect you from gotchas.

Digital Trust and Clean Growth: Learnings from a Cross LF Project and Cross Sector Initiative - John Jordan, Province of British Columbia; Shuli Goodman, LF Energy & Dr. Martin Wainstein, Yale OpenLab

The Province of British Columbia, a significant provider of Canadian energy and natural resources, is rising to meet the global challenge of climate change. The Province’s CleanBC strategy is being delivered in collaboration with Indigenous communities and businesses to seize new clean economy opportunities and help communities adapt to the impacts of climate change. This kind of collaboration is needed to address the global scale of climate change.

The LF Energy Project is taking up the challenge to shift from a grid type architecture to a system of systems by building the interfaces and touch points between these various systems. The old system was built with a point to point framework. Now we need a many to many architecture and communication framework. That’s the whole of the new energy paradigm – profoundly distributed energy renewable resources that are orchestrated to provide constant and reliable electricity.

In this talk we will discuss the establishment and early execution of a multi-party, cross Linux Foundation collaboration including the Province of British Columbia, large multinational energy producers, smaller software companies and other key stakeholders. We will examine how Hyperledger Indy and Aries technology is directly applied to the energy sector to bring digital trust to the provenance and Greenhouse Gas emissions profile of energy sources such as Liquified Natural Gas. The goal is to meaningfully contribute to the decarbonization of the economy through globally open, cryptographically verifiable representations of the origin and characteristics of energy.

Fabric Private Chaincode: Enhancing Privacy in Hyperledger Fabric using Trusted Execution Environments - Jeb Linton, IBM & Mic Bowman, Intel

Hyperledger Fabric is a popular permissioned blockchain framework for the enterprise, which enables decentralized applications including supply chain management and trade finance. In this presentation, IBM and Intel introduce Fabric Private Chaincode (FPC), a joint effort to enable privacy-sensitive use cases in Fabric, including: analytics on medical and genetic information, sealed-bid auctions and private voting systems.

FPC enhances privacy by running the Fabric chaincode application in a Trusted Execution Environment, supported by hardware-based technology such as Intel SGX. In particular, FPC executes the chaincode from encrypted memory, thereby hiding sensitive information even from operators of Peers, and their respective organizations. Also, it enables remote Peers and Clients to verify the expected chaincode execution by means of a hardware-based cryptographic attestation.

The combination of these features enables a chaincode to maintain secret information and to authenticate itself remotely. Clients can thus establish a secure channel with the chaincode, so to transfer any sensitive data (invocation requests and responses) without exposing it to the hosting Peer. Similarly, the chaincode can store any state on the ledger, or in data collections, in encrypted form across the execution of multiple transactions. At commit-time, Peers then validate endorsed encrypted data.

From a user perspective, FPC is designed to maintain Fabric’s programming model (transaction flow, chaincode interface) and to enable the implementation using diverse Trusted Execution Environments. The presentation reports on the latest SGX-based FPC prototype and discusses plans to support additional platforms through collaborations with the Confidential Computing Consortium.

Financial Supply Chain Platform for the Real Estate Industry - Kai Wang, ENTROBUS & Baohua Yang, Oracle

Real estate is the biggest industry in China. In the real estate supply chain, medium and small enterprises in upstream have difficulties in financing. Financial institutions take great efforts to verify the authenticity of information.

Kai‘s team designed and implemented a financial supply chain platform for the real estate industry, named ENTROBUS blockchain. The prototype platform system ranked the 2nd in 2018 Alibaba Cloud Blockchain Competition among 600+ projects. After that, with one year’s system development and deployment, it is now a real-world platform with dozens of enterprise users. Country Garden is China’s leading largest residential property developer focusing on urbanization, which services as the core enterprise in the platform. Based on the core enterprise’s payment accreditation, it could break information asymmetry, reduce credit costs, and optimize capital allocation by credit transfer.

With the core enterprise’ credit transfer, enterprises in the supply chain could enjoy low cost financial services, and improve competitive advantage. With blockchain techniques, the financial institutions could get first-hand information in the supply chain, which reduces the cost of risk control. It provides a platform for the financial institutions with end-to-end data traceability, confirmation and validation, and promotes the healthy and stable development of supply chain financial services.

Governing DLT Networks - David Treat, Accenture & Rob Palatnick, DTCC

Accenture and DTCC have co-authored a paper, Governing DLT Networks, and we would like to jointly conduct a presentation with David Treat, MD, Global Blockchain Lead at Accenture and member of the Hyperledger Board and Rob Palatnick, CTO of DTCC and Chair of the Hyperledger Board. In it we propose a governance operating model to address approaches to managing the activity, connectivity, software changes, contractual agreements and transaction finality for every participant across the network.
Our proposed DLT governance model is composed of eight high-level functional areas:
Governance, Participant Lifecycle, Runtime Operations, Data Governance, Third-Party Management, Platform Management, Infrastructure and Legal and Finance.

The paper marked the beginning of an important dialogue that we would like to continue driving across the ecosystem to determine how to leverage new technologies to drive DLT forward and benefit of the global blockchain ecosystem. Grafting Blockchains into Enterprise Businesses - The LEI and Digital Verifiable Credentials - Karla McKenna, GLEIF & Michal Piechocki, Business Reporting - Advisory Group

Evaluation of credentials of persons acting in officially in a business capacity is a key element of trust in enterprise world. Ability to verify a digital identity of a company, organization or business, linked to a Digitally Verifiable Credential (DVC), provides a fundamental building block for the digital economy.

The Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) can have relevance in the digital world by leveraging the strength of the LEI to provide unique and permanent global identification of organizations/businesses. Coupled with DVCs issued on SOVRIN Hyperledger Indy platform the LEI with DVCs ensure trust in digital world.

This presentation demonstrates the results of the Digital Verifiable Credential Proof of Concept conducted by the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF), along with developer BR-AG,in cooperation with its network of regulators, LEI issuers and organizations/businesses developing trusted identification solutions secured by blockchain technologies.

By leveraging the LEI within digital verifiable credentials, counterparties can more easily accomplish the tasks of identity verification, authentication, and authorization.

Hedge your Bets: Pluggable Blockchains for Business Continuity - Jon Geater, Jitsuin

Hyperledger is the home of Enterprise DLT, and that means Hyperledger Frameworks need to play well in Enterprise software products and environments. As with any technology component the DLT is just a part of the solution and no more or less important than any other, and the technical components must bend to meet the commercial operators, not the other way around.

During the course of developing Jitsuin Archivist for secure asset lifecycle management the developers discovered that different use cases demand different levels of scalability, flexibility, performance and more from the DLT underlay. The development also brought the true maturity and capabilities of various DLTs to light, presenting significant challenges to development. For all these reasons, and to go to production confidently they needed more than pluggable consensus: they needed pluggable blockchains.

This detailed technical talk will describe experiences of engaging in the HL contributor ecosystem, the commercial imperative to stay flexible with respect to DLTs, and the techniques required to go to production. It will begin with a description of the use case (both business and technical), tell the stories of the main technical findings and comparisons between various frameworks (pure technical, operational, non-functional) and go into detail on the technical implications of each.

It will then move on to outline the architecture of production SaaS system based on blockchain which is able to accommodate andovercome those limitation by easily switching out one DLT for another depending on need.

Finally, a demo will show how the pluggable DLTs appear invisible to the user, and simple to the developer.

How Hyperledger Fabric and Hyperledger Aries are Helping to Bring Control and Trust Back to Digital Identity - Dmitry Barinov, SecureKey Technologies

As technology has continued to advance at an accelerated rate and people are uploading more and more of their lives online, many common methods of identity authentication haven’t kept up with the pace. The result of relying on the current singular modes of authentication has been an increase in breached records and declining faith in organizations to have the right protocols in place to safeguard sensitive information effectively. We have the tools to fix this; all that’s missing is the right approach that will bring privacy and stability back to digital identity.

Fortunately, the world is starting to see actual action being taken to address the digital identity problem head on. Earlier this year, a first-of-its-kind, blockchain-based digital identity network launched in Canada. The network leverages both the trusted organizations involved and the strong technological frameworks used to build it—including Hyperledger Fabric—to enable consumers to help verify their identities quickly and securely to access services and products.

In this session, Dmitry will explain how this network formed, how its launch marks a step forward in how we will improve digital identity, as well as lessons learned so far and where to go from here. He will also then get into the more technical details and explain how Hyperledger Fabric and Aries interop play fundamental roles in enabling the private and secure sharing of information to take place.

Hyperledger Caliper Dashboard: A User Friendly Tool for Visualizing and Configuring Hyperledger Blockchain Benchmarks - Jason You, Purdue Grad Student

Hyperledger Blockchain configuration takes time and efforts, visualizing the performances of it adds another hassle to Blockchain developers and users. Hyperledger Caliper project fills the gap between Blockchain development and benchmark testing and takes away this burden.

However, the current state of Hyperledger Caliper is limited to command line running only, and this is not very accessible or intuitive for most Blockchain users. Even for developers that are familiar with all the Hyperledger framework configurations for Fabric, Sawtooth, Iroha, etc., it still adds an unnecessary layer of complexity for Blockchain testing.

Jason You, a summer intern for Hyperledger Caliper project in 2019, starts to develop a user friendly graphic user interface (GUI) for Hyperledger community. The goal of building this GUI is to let people with any experience level in Hyperledger to easily start their own Blockchain benchmark testing in their local machine.

Jason already finished a minimum viable product (MVP) that integrates with Caliper Core and Caliper-CLI. The current functionalities includes test configuration file generation, test start command sending from GUI by mouse clicking, and real-time visualization of returned benchmark results. This GUI contains a server, an API, and a front end interface. It can be easily integrated with SQL or no-SQL DB, and save all test data and configuration metadata for future usage. The GUI MVP uses MongoDB to save data, but in future development more flexibility can be added.

As the main contributor for this GUI, Jason You is still working on this project in his free time, and any contribution to this project is very welcomed. More contribution details can be found in the project Github repository.

Hyperledger Fabric with Cello and Kubernetes Operators - Tong Li, IBM & Manank Patni

Hyperledger Cello aims to bring the on-demand “as-a-service” deployment model to the blockchain ecosystem to reduce the effort required for creating, managing, and terminating blockchains. It provides a multi-tenant chain service efficiently and automatically on top of various infrastructures, e.g., baremetal, virtual machine, and more container platforms.

An Operator, on the other hand, is a method of packaging, deploying and managing a Kubernetes application which in this case, is a Hyperledger Fabric Deployment.

Kubernetes is the preferred choice of many developers when it comes to deploying their Fabric Application. The cello project provides a way for them to quickly set up their fabric infrastructure while still maintaining a high level of customization whenever required. Operators allow us to make our application highly automated by describing the various events and the resulting actions making operators fit for implementing highly sophisticated business logic in the production stage.

The cloud-like capabilities that are encoded into the Operator code can provide advanced user experience, automating such features as updates, backups, and scaling. All of this is accomplished using standard Kubernetes tools, CLI and API.

Hyperledger Umbra: Simulating Hyperledger Blockchains using Mininet - Raphael V. Rosa, UNICAMP

The simulation research internship during the summer of 2018 led to the creation of the Hyperledger Umbra Lab. Due to the overall difficulty of getting Hyperledger blockchain frameworks running under the Shadow simulation tool, work on the Umbra lab has slowed to a crawl. A different network tool called Mininet has been proposed as an alternative to using Shadow and it has the potential to drastically reduce the startup cost of getting a network emulation tool running Hyperledger blockchains. Umbra stands for a research project to test the feasibility of running Hyperledger blockchains under Mininet for the purposes of running scalability and consensus mechanism experiments.

In 2019, Hyperledger Umbra was successfully implemented on Mininet, initially reproducing Fabric networks. Umbra can be extensible to emulate any Hyperledger project, and scalable to hundreds (even thousands - ongoing tests) of nodes.

The aim of showcasing Umbra, demonstrating a blockchain network easily deployed in a laptop, consists in building the foundations for designing and conducting empirical computer science research experiments to help direct improvements in design and architecture of future versions of the Hyperledger blockchain platforms. Examples of such improvements include new consensus algorithms, broadcast/gossip protocols, and security mechanisms.

In this technical presentation, Raphael V. Rosa is going to show Umbra, the platform architecture, its design principles and functionalities, how to create and run experiments on it, a Fabric network demonstration, and how to extend the platform to support other Hyperledger projects.

IoT+Blockchain: An Ongoing Project in Production - Roberto Fernandez Hergueta, everis NTT Data Company

Power flows and operational procedures in electricity distribution grids are controlled by tried-and-tested Industrial Control Systems (ICS) that are connected to a wide array of sensors and electrical machines. The critical operation of these assets is generally managed by Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), which send and receive data to the machines operating the grid, and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, in charge of the monitorization and data management of all events occurring during day-to-day operation of the grid.

SCADA systems generate a vast amount of information to be processed by a team of operators around the clock, providing invaluable insight on the state of the network and possible alerts to be looked out.

At everis we have developed and deployed a Blockchain project for a Spanish utilities company, in which SCADA systems send all data related to incidents in the grid to be processed by the Blockchain. Registering and timestamping incidents in a decentralized network can solve these intrinsic problems when it comes to network operation, for multiple companies are involved in the management of electrical grids. In this project we have leveraged the power of raw data proceeding from ICS combined with a trustless, transparent decentralized application in a Hyperledger Fabric environment.

To that effect, we have deployed a multi-node, multi-organization Fabric production environment, in which data stream directly from SCADA systems to the Blockchain through REST APIs without the need for any human intervention whatsoever. This production network can easily handle the flow of SCADA messages at a rate of 5000+ transactions per minute in an actual, operational environment.

Mir-BFT: A Scalable High-Throughput BFT for Blockchains - Marko Vukolic, IBM

In this talk we present Mir-BFT (or, simply, Mir), a robust and scalable Byzantine fault-tolerant (BFT) total order broadcast protocol aimed at maximizing throughput on wide-area networks (WANs), targeting permissioned and Proof-of-Stake permissionless blockchains.

We show that Mir achieves unprecedented throughput on WANs without sacrificing latency, robustness to malicious behavior, or even performance in clusters. Our evaluation shows that Mir orders more than 60000 signed Bitcoin-sized and over 16000 signed Fabric-sized transactions per second on a widely distributed 100 nodes, 1 Gbps WAN setup, while preventing a range of attacks including request duplication performance attacks.

To achieve this, Mir relies on a novel protocol mechanism that allows a set of leaders to propose request batches independently, in parallel, while rotating the assignment of a partitioned request hash space to leaders. Several optimizations boost Mir throughput even further, including partial replication through a novel abstraction we call light total order (LTO) broadcast.

Perhaps most importantly, Mir relies on proven BFT protocol constructs, which simplifies reasoning about Mir correctness. Specifically, Mir is a generalization of the celebrated and scrutinized PBFT protocol. In a nutshell, Mir follows PBFT ``safety-wise'', with changes needed to accommodate novel features restricted to PBFT liveness.

Moving Out of the Test Kitchen: From Idea to Implementation - Melanie Cutlan & Patricia Miller, Accenture

In 2018, the internal Accenture procurement team was facing significant challenges with managing supplier identification, risk assessment, onboarding, and vendor data management.Traditional models and solutions created poor data quality, lack of process visibility, long turnaround times, and costly manual interventions.Accenture began to explore blockchain technology to help solve these challenges and set off on a journey that ultimately led to the roll-out of a new internal solution in August of 2019.

Built on Hyperledger Fabric, SupplierHub is a compliance-by-design solution that creates a shared source of truth between buyers and suppliers to improve risk compliance, speed up onboarding time, and decrease manual effort tied to traditionally siloed systems with poor data quality.Proven within its own business, Accenture is now expanding the network of suppliers and buyers on the platform.

Coming up with a compelling use case for a blockchain POC can be hard but seeing that POC come to life in production to deliver actual business results can be even harder. Join Melanie Cutlan and Patricia Miller for an engaging workshop on the key challenges, lessons learned, and unexpected discoveries of bringing a blockchain initiative to bear within a large enterprise. They’ll cover important technology and business considerations, tips on managing diverse stakeholders, and demonstrate the importance of crafting an articulate value message.

No Pain, No Blockchain: Reducing the Complexity of Network Deployment - Ed Kazmierczak, Penta Global

Many enterprise blockchain service providers have made exciting advances toward helping their end users onboard more seamlessly into blockchain environments through fully managed deployment and the provision of familiar, intuitive UI and user experience.

Despite its upside for end users, abstracting technical complexity out of the deployment experience usually comes at the cost of a user's personal control over defining, refining, and managing the parameters of their own private network and/or associated node, a convenience fee that's too high for most non-end user subsets of the blockchain community, such as:

a) dApp Developers
b) Solutions Architects & Ecosystem Managers
c) Enterprise DevOps Teams

For these users, a sizeable accessibility & usability gap exists at the initial stages of network deployment, where a multitude of steps are required to complete network & node configuration, genesis file initialisation, additional tool/service integrations etc.

Some of the most commonly cited barriers associated with this arduous process include:
a) Poorly organised/disjointed, lacking, or non-existent documentation
b) Incoherence and excessive coupling of setup modules

The purpose of this ThinkTank is to harness the collective wisdom of the diverse, talented group of people in the room to discuss, ideate, and explore solutions that address the following problem statement:

"Many would-be facilitators, builders, and adopters of enterprise blockchain solutions currently struggle to navigate the complexities of initial network setup and deployment."

We welcome all HLF members who feel passionate about this topic, from technical engineers and researchers, to product owners/managers, business analysts, solutions specialists, marketers, and everyone in between!

Panel: Blockchain Standards, Open Source, or Both? (the Answer is Both!) - Ron Resnick, Enterprise Ethereum Alliance; Victoria Lee, DLA Piper & Brian Behlendorf, The Linux Foundation

The Enterprise Ethereum Alliance is a member-led industry organization whose primary objective is to help guide web-scale commercial adoption of Ethereum-based services. This is achieved by delivering an open standards-based architecture and specifications based on market needs, and testing and certification programs that ensure interoperability across multi-vendor solutions. The availability of validated and verified trusted solutions is essential for Ethereum to win over consumer confidence and penetrate the largest world markets.

Hyperledger, hosted by The Linux Foundation, is an open source collaborative effort created to advance cross-industry blockchain technologies. Only an Open Source, collaborative software development approach can ensure the transparency, longevity, interoperability and support required to bring blockchain technologies forward to mainstream commercial adoption. That is what Hyperledger is about – communities of software developers building blockchain frameworks and platforms.

Within the Ethereum community, projects are beginning to span both organizations. For example, the ConsenSys spoke PegaSys built their Pantheon Ethereum client to conform to the EEA Client Specification. Pantheon was later submitted to Hyperledger and accepted as the Hyperledger Besu project. Once the EEA certification program is operational later this year, ConsenSys will likely submit a Besu-based product to EEA for certification.

This panel, co-hosted by the Executive Directors of the EEA and Hyperledger, will discuss the synergistic value that both organizations bring to the Ethereum ecosystem via the emergence of open-source based, standards-certified products.

Panel: Rethinking Public Sector through Blockchain - Bobbi Muscara, Ledger Academy; Saptarshi Choudhury, Paramount Software Solutions; Sean O'Kelly, Former Public Sector CIO

Governments' and other public sector entities core function is to act on behalf of society to create the laws and rules that must be followed, and to ensure that they are being followed. It is foundationally necessary for governments to have access to accurate, relevant, and complete information in order to fulfill these responsibilities, which is why governments possess legal, regulatory, and judicial mechanisms to compel the truth from all societal participants.

This authority uniquely positions governments' as validators of truth and custodians of trusted information. Emerging technologies continually provide new capabilities that enable creativity and the rethinking of existing processes, interactions, and models. While all emerging technologies will play a role in the public sector, blockchain will certainly be among the most consequential, because of its specific role as a facilitator, validator, and custodian of trusted information.

This technology promises to enable governments' and other public sector entities to interact with societal participants within a larger ecosystem, or fabric, which will break down traditional public-private silos and provide completely new approaches toward governance. The key components of this ecosystem are a) identity (real world items of value (assets) that can be represented digitally), b) interactions (traceability of transactions), c) regulatory compliance (the embedded laws, rules, and contracts that should be followed), and d) governance (the creation, maintenance, and operation of the ecosystem).

Practical Tools for Enterprise Uses of Hyperledger Fabric – Ledger Verification and System Operations - Satoshi Oshima, Hitachi America, Ltd.

Toward production uses of systems with blockchain like Hyperledger Fabric, we present two tools in this presentation: Blockchain Verifier and Operations Smart Contract.

Blockchain Verifier is a tool to verify the integration of the ledgers and the transactions, which has recently joined Hyperledger Labs.

The blockchain technology offers immutable and auditable data store which is crucial for many of enterprise systems. While there are a huge number of blockchain platforms and applications, relatively small number of discussions and tools are there for how to deal with auditing in the blockchain-based systems. We have focused in the integrity of the data in the blockchain and developed an open-source tool "Blockchain Verifier" to check if a blockchain ledger has integrity which it is supposed to have both in the platform level and application level.

The checks ensure that the transactions in the ledger were executed correctly and are free from any falsification so that the results can be used as evidences for auditing processes.

The tool currently supports ledgers produced by Hyperledger Fabric, and provides basic integration checks and interface to implement additional checks which are specific to each application.

In this presentation, we discuss what evidences we should have in order to audit a Hyperledger Fabric-based system, demonstrates the tool and presents extracted evidences from example applications.

As the tool is still under development and auditing of blockchain systems is still an open issue, we appreciate contributions and suggestions.

Operating Smart Contract is smart contract-based system operation.

Toward realizing production uses of systems using blockchain (BC) like Hyperledger Fabric (call after BC-based systems), it is necessary to establish system management and operations for BC-based systems to maintain high availability (e.g., 365/7/24) and quality of the service of the system. Examples of operations of BC-based systems are upgrading the system continuously and taking a snapshot of ledger data and rolling back by using the snapshot when a bug occurs.

On the other hand, single BC-based system will be built across multiple organizations (e.g., data centers of each organization) having different operational policies (e.g., operational procedures, timing and parameters) with prohibited inter-organizational administrative access permissions. Such multi-domain formation will trigger a problem in that executing system operations over BC-based systems will be difficult due to the difficulty in unifying and/or adjusting operational policies. Besides, such system operations should cover not only BC platform but also application layer (e.g., upgrade a smart contract and the applications). In the case of Hyperledger Fabric, system managers across organizations would have to adjust operational policy by using phone, email or voting system and then execute the operations based on the policy individually.

Toward solving the problem, we have been considering an operations execution method for BC-based systems, which defines system operations as a smart contract so that unified and synchronized operations across organizations can be executed effectively. Also, we have adopted the method to systems using Hyperledger Fabric to validate the feasibility.

In this presentation, we introduce the above activity to discuss issues and future design on the system operations.

Project Bakong: Blockchain Solutions in Developing Economies - James Loperfido, Soramitsu

James Loperfido, VP of Business Development at Soramitsu, will provide an overview and case study of the company's project with the Central Bank of Cambodia. Soramitsu leveraged its Hyperledger Iroha framework alongside its mobile applications for digital identity, payments, and digital assets to create a retail payment system for the general populous. In a country where 80% of the population is unbanked, widespread adoption of this technology allows for digital representations of the US dollar and Cambodian Riel to enable internet commerce. In addition to being able to purchase products and services through the internet, consumers and local merchants can leverage mobile only technology to exchange value peer-to-peer with very little cost. Application of a digital payments network like project Bakong is estimated to save 1% of GDP annually for developing countries according to research published by the Central Bank of Malaysia. This represents a potential $200 million annual savings. Moreover, a single system tracking the financial transactions within the economy will allow for automated record keeping, embedded audits, and thus allow for a massive shift in tax planning and monetary policy. The application of short-term consumer micro-loans will bring the Cambodian economic infrastructure in line with other developing nations while creating a bridge to the global economy on a grand scale.

The presentation will cover how Soramitsu has leveraged its technology with respect to digital onboarding, payments, and blockchain utility. It will also cover a potential roadmap for growth and continued development of technology and services to create economic efficiency.

Reducing Worker’s Comp Fraud in CA with Hyperledger Fabric. A Technical Deep Dive - David Berger, Integra Ledger

Reducing Worker’s Comp Fraud in CA with Hyperledger Fabric.
A Technical Deep Dive.
David Berger, CTO Integra Ledger

In May, Discovery as a Service (DaaS) company Arcuity ai, Inc™. (www.arcuityai.com) announced they are working with Integra Ledger and have developed ArcuityVizion™, a blockchain-based technology to enhance efficiency and security in record retrieval and sharing of documents in litigated and non-litigated workers' compensation cases.

Record retrieval has historically been a time-intensive, manual process with significant duplication of work and costs by law firms and copy services throughout the legal industry. Those excess costs get passed on to insurers and the longer a claim takes to close, the more expensive it becomes ArcuityVizion™ will streamline the retrieval and sharing of records guaranteed identical to the custodian of record. This will help eliminate fraud and significantly improve the speed of resolution of claims.

The blockchain substrate utilizes Integra’s Hyperledger Fabric Proof of Existence based API which was presented at the 2018 Hyperledger Global Forum, “Demo of a Real World Deployed Hyperledger Composer/Fabric Blockchain.”

The presentation will include a live demo and cover the technical choices including:
• Emphasizing that only the Document Hash is stored on the ledger
• The move from Hyperledger Composer to The Hyperledger Node SDK
• The move from using IBM Blockchain Platform to a multi cloud Self-Hosting model
• The choice of Kubernetes, Helm Charts and Rancher
• The advantage on utilizing XMP PDF Metadata
• The UI impact of utilizing embedded QRCodes in the documents along with the challenge this brings as the embedded QRCode changes the hash of the document.

Selling Blockchain to the C-Suite - James Wester, IDC

The benefits of blockchain across multiple use cases and industries are becoming evident as more pilots and proofs of concept are implemented, including lower costs and increased efficiencies. But making the leap from pilot to production is a challenge for many technology and innovation organizations as they struggle to quantify those benefits in terms that satisfy c-level executives. That challenge is made more difficult by the fact that blockchain projects don't always lend themselves to traditional business models. (Example: If costs are distributed, how are returns realized?) This Think Tank will look at how projects that are already seeing success have been justified, including business models, metrics and more. It will look at the many use cases being developed by vendors in the blockchain space and how those projects have been assessed in terms of business value. The intent of the session is to help technologists learn how to evaluate their projects and sell blockchain to the c-level.

Towards Formally Verified Smart Contracts with Haskell - Allison Irvin & Nick Waywood, IBM

In enterprise DLTs, smart contracts implement security critical and business critical logic. Therefore there is a clear need to have confidence that smart contracts adhere to the intended specification, without any errors, bugs or malicious code. Events like the DAO attack on the Ethereum blockchain in 2016 is unacceptable in a permissioned, enterprise solution. In order to guarantee the correctness of a smart contract, formal verification is necessary. Because of this, there is a strong research focus in the wider blockchain community on enabling formal verification of smart contracts written in functional programming languages (e.g. DAML, Liquidity, F*, Elle, Verisol, etc.). Functional programming languages lend themselves well to formal verification due to the fact that both formal verification and functional programming have their roots in mathematics. However, to date, little work within the Hyperledger community has been done on bringing formal verification to smart contracts on Hyperledger DLTs.

This talk presents support for writing Hyperledger Fabric chaincode with Haskell, a big first step towards having fully verified and secure smart contracts. The work is evaluated by comparing contracts written in Go, Java and Node with Haskell to demonstrate how a functional programming language can help identify flaws in logic, leading to code that is both correct, secure and easier to reason with. The talk finally demonstrates how smart contracts written in Haskell can be formally verified.

Towards Governance in a Blockchain Consortium - Andreas Hermann, University of Bundeswehr Munich

The German-Austrian research project "NutriSafe" aims to investigate the resilience of supply networks in food production and logistics using distributed ledger technology (DLT) based on Hyperledger Fabric. In addition to new business models with DLT, the use of a secure DLT with interfaces to enterprise information systems are also investigated. Special attention is given to the use of DLT in small and medium sized enterprises (SME). Governance is a major challenge in the areas of data, participation, technology, transactions and smart contracts for the success of the network due to the distributed structure of the DLT. All results and findings will be made available to the community as open source in the form of a toolkit.

Understanding the Hyperledger Indy Distributed Ledger - Alexander Shcherbakov, Evernym

Hyperledger Indy has its own implementation of Distributed Ledger (indy-node) not dependent on any other blockchain platform. It also has its own implementation of a PBFT-like consensus protocol (indy-plenum).

Indy-node is a Ledger purpose-build for Identity. However, it can be used as a general-purpose blockchain for use cases besides Identity.

One of indy-node deployments (Sovrin Ledger) is successfully functioning in production for more than 2 years.

The presentation focuses on the Architecture and specific of Indy Ledger. In includes Plenum consensus protocol (RBFT), corresponding crypto (in particular, BLS multi-signature), organization of transactions and storages (ledgers and states), usage of merkle trees and Patricia merkle tries, auditability, workflow of read and write requests, catch-up procedure.

Support of custom plugins and custom transactions on top of indy-plenum or indy-node will also be described.

View from the Trenches: Practical Issues In Enterprise Blockchain Implementations and Potential Solutions - Baohua Yang, Oracle

This session will discuss some critical problems and requirements when implementing the Hyperledger Fabric blockchain in real-world implementations, including node recovery, blockchain checkpointing, and byzantine fault-tolerant consensus.Although the original public blockchains rely on a self-sovereign management style with complete decentralization, in the enterprise-based consortium blockchains the participating enterprises are often concerned about maintaining their own nodes with efficiency and resiliency, while at the same time, working as part of a cross-company blockchain network. This requires a secure and flexible governance model and on-chain collaboration mechanisms to address the many operational issues at different layers of the blockchain network – from interoperable connections, to storage management, membership governance, chaincode distribution, etc. We will share our experience and approaches to addressing these considerations and invite further technical discussions in the community towards practical solutions.
