MINNEAPOLIS – Mayor Jacob Frey will sign an Executive Order that protects people seeking or receiving gender-affirming care in Minneapolis. During a time when many states are restricting or criminalizing access to this kind of care, this Executive Order supports people’s access to all services, supplies, drug therapies, and other care that an individual may receive to support and affirm their gender identity.

Executive Order 2022-04 prohibits all City of Minneapolis departments and staff from taking any enforcement action against providers or individuals exercising their right to gender-affirming health care in Minneapolis. The Executive Order also affirms the right of minors living apart from their parents to make their own medical decision regarding gender-affirming health care, pursuant to Minnesota state law.

Mayor Frey will be joined by Council President Jenkins and various healthcare providers to discuss the importance of this order and the impact it will have on our city.

This partnership is part of Green Minneapolis’ Twin Cities Climate Resiliency Initiative that is focused on expanding the urban tree canopy across the 7 county Twin Cities metro area. This will add to the existing 600,000 trees under MPRB management in Minneapolis. Green Minneapolis will lead collaboration with the MPRB to add and maintain trees that will mitigate the City’s major heat islands - North and South Green Zones and Downtown and equalize tree canopy coverage across environmentally disadvantaged parts of the city.

Mayor Jacob Frey joins Council Members Jeremiah Ellison and LaTrisha Vetaw, City leadership from both the Health and Regulatory Services Departments, as well as community partners to highlight $3 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding dedicated to programming that will put Minneapolis on a path to eliminate childhood lead poisoning from housing by 2035.

The proposed investment will help Minneapolis be the first in the nation to eliminate lead poisoning in rental homes starting in our environmental justice communities with historically high levels of lead poisoning first. Interventions would primarily be window replacement. This would be a data-driven program acting in neighborhoods that we know have lead risks for children. This program addresses the need to find and remove hazards before children encounter them.

With the ongoing heat wave, City and County leaders remind everyone to take steps to stay safe. Hennepin County has an interactive map of locations where people can find relief from the summer heat.

The City, County and partners share the goal that all people gain access to permanent housing that is safe, stable and affordable over the long term. Since March 2020, the City and Hennepin County have invested $26.5 million to expand and improve shelter and outreach services. Because of these investments, Minneapolis has 200 more shelter beds, including low barrier culturally specific shelter, available today than a year ago at this time and another 36-bed facility under construction.
