Interesting discussion on seeds of the Open Source Microfactory and rapid manufacturing, casting, microwave metal. There's good room to collaborate on a practical, bootstrapping open fabrication facility - on scales from a living room to a full Microfactory with induction furnace and hot metal processing.

About 6" separation between rotors, shafts are 1.7". A gear transfers the motion from one shaft to another.
What can be replaced with 3D prints? We're determining if 3D printed bearings and geardowns could do this. While we know that a 1kW+ motor is required, we are doing both the kW-scale motor and a small motor like in a cordless drill, 100W, with 1000x geardown to achieve about 30 kg-M torque. Study the torque requirements at https://wiki.opensourceecology.org/wiki/Shredder_Drive

=Overview=
One of the critical distinctions between open source software and open source hardware is that '''every single build replication outside of OSE is effectively a fork'''. This imposes additional requirements for development documentation. Likewise, this also limits the relevance of Github as a 'silver bullet' for development coordination. Paradoxically, Github would not be able to scale for hardware, and a more generalized database approach is more suitable for tracking hardware forks. Moreover, Githib is suitable for about 10% of the assets generated in open hardware development, with other platforms such as Wikis, YouTube, and other media platforms being more suitable. This overview video touches upon more details of the ''every hardware replication as a fork'' consideration.
=Content=
This video continues from the previous video - [[Microfactory Boot Camp - Collaborative Literacy - OSE Linux, Design Jams and Extreme Manufacturing]] - which ended with the discussion of the Dashboard as an organizing wiki page for a scalable parallel development process that can be used in conjunction with [[HeroX]] design challenges. This continues to:
*00:00 - Start
*3:05 - the function of the [[Development Template]] as an organizing framework for the overall development process.
*3:30 - [[Development Template]]
*8:25 - Different versions are kept at the [[Genealogies]] page, such as the [[3D Printer Genealogy]]
*10:16 - Templates allow for scalable organization, but a user and maintainer community must be present to manage the templates.
*11:15 - Development templates can be created for different scales of organizations: machine ecologies, machines, modules, submodules.
*11:49 - Relevance of Github and concept of '''every independent replication effectively being a fork'''
*14:55 - Going through the Development Template and whether Github should be used for each step. The answer is that only 10% of the Development Template lends itself well to Github.
*17:55 - The end game for open product development is that any company in the world has a common pool of design and techniques to begin product development by reusing modules, thereby not reinventing the wheel every time a new product is designed.
*18:55 - Open source development is more likely in the limit of high complexity. This is already visible with software, such as with Artificial Intelligence and Computer Vision - but the same trend applies to hardware.

In order to make a large printer, the Universal Axis can be used as is up to 1 meter in size. The frame can be enlarged correspondingly. Electronics need a larger external stepper driver such as the TB6600 - while using the same RAMPS based electronics. Heater elements can be scaled readily using nichrome wire-based heater elements.

An explanation for an elegant mechanism for tightening belts - without typical zip ties or bolts that are normally used for belt attachment. Our method invovlves simple friction pegs and a tapered hole with the belt profile - and a belt peg that holds the belt securely into place. Using this technique, a belt is tightened by holding one side of the belt tights and inserting a peg in the other side.

We are holding our first ever 1 week immersion boot camp from August 25 to August 31, 2018.
See more information on the wiki at https://www.opensourceecology.org/open-source-microfactory-boot-camp/
One side of it is learning collaborative open source product design toolchains - 100% libre and open.
Another side is entrepreneurship - we want you to run workshops and to get paid for them - to support a right livelihood in open source hardware. Imagine the Open Source Everything Store - like Amazon, but open. Find out more in the video.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What you see here at Open Source Ecology is an ambitious program based on a volunteer effort. To help us reach the goals - please consider joining as an OSE Developer in 2017-

Colllaborative workflow where we generate CAD for all Power Cube parts in FreeCAD, and then assemble these rapidly into place.
A whole team works on CADding up the parts according to a visual Bill of Materials. If all the parts are available, they can be assembled into the final model in a matter of a couple hours. This workflow in principle reduces the CAD time from weeks to days, and at best to one day if all parts are specified prior to the CAD sprint.

Meeting after the second D3D 3D Printer workshop, where we built a 6' tall 3D printer + 12 others. Event summary - There were issues on locating magnets in their holes, which stretched the build by 2 hours. One mistake was made in assembling the motor 3D printed piece (6mm bolts were left out) - other than this - build modularity was seamless.

By Roberto Jeramillo, OSE Developer.
See his work log at http://opensourceecology.org/wiki/Roberto_Log#Sun_Jul_30.2C_2017
The procedure is:
First I took these DXF files as an example: File:Trencherdxfs.zip. So, what we need is a 2D drawing for the face to be cut, with DXF format.
These are the steps by Roberto:
"Follow Abe's procedure: DXF_Export_in_FreeCAD (I'd add that to see the DXF options, I had to go to Draft Workbench before). But do not export yet.
1. Open the FreeCAD file to export.
2. Go to Draft Workbench.
3. Select the object to export.
4. Select a standard view (keys 1-6), which shows the face to be cut.
5. Go to Draft menu - Shape 2D view.
6. Select the new object Shape2DView and check it's ok.
7. Export as Autodesk DXF (*.dxf).
8. Open the DXF file and check it's ok.
File:CEB Press Drawer Side.dxf This is what I got."

This is part of a workflow where 3D assemblies are created from 2D cuts of metal. The 2D pieces are welded into 3D assemblies -
thereby allowing rapid build time.
We make updates in FreeCAD, then we extract the 2D DXF files from the FreeCAD file. Then we replace whichever parts were changed in the 2D DXF file.
See more about the CEB press updates at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8onMqEnB6E.

This is a detailed explanation of the workflow that OSE uses to produce Language Agnostic Instructionals (LAIs) - perhaps the most advanced form of hardware build documentation. This procedure is open source, and the software tools are also open source except for Google Docs.
Procedure uses FreeCAD as the basis, with Inkscape for cleaning up images. The instructional is then edited in Google Docs. Source files are then saved on the OSE wiki, so that any work remains editable to facilitate continued or derivative work.
Epic procedure by Roberto Jeramillo, OSE Developer.
Voiceover should be upgraded from computer voice to human voice.
